Notre Dame Football: The evolution of Brian Kelly - southbendtribune.com

...

Eleven months into his tenure as Notre Dame’s head football coach, Kelly was already swimming in a riptide.

Flack over the 4-5 record and the proliferation of unflattering Bob Davie comparisons were actually the dullest of the many verbal daggers coming Kelly’s way. At the center of the madness was the Oct. 27 passing of student videographer Declan Sullivan, who toppled to his death when the scissor lift he was filming football practice from capsized in high winds.

...

...

There are some things, unique to Notre Dame, you just can’t prepare for no matter how many people you talk to beforehand. And your first year as the head coach at Notre Dame, there are some things that smack you in the face.

“The No. 1 thing is people don’t care about the problems. All they want are results. They don’t care what you inherited or what difficulty you had, what injuries you have or constraints anybody may put on you. Don’t tell me how rocky the sea is, just bring the ship in.”

...
Lou Holtz

...

“I told Brian, ‘You think at Notre Dame, they’re going to give you three or four years to build a program,’æ” Holtz said with a chuckle. “They give you three quarters maximum.”

...

"Three quarters"! ShaqEvanigod will run up the white flag after the first 3 and out.

There's more on the 4 QBs, 1A & 1B, and 2A & 2B, recruiting, defense, etc at the link above.

Great article. Only thing I will add, or disagree with, is I posted by game 2 or 3 on game threads and subsequent posts that the defense was noticeably better than in years previous. The Navy game had me scratching my head and punting stray kittens...
I think by game 4 of the season, I posted that I hoped ND could find a way to keep Diaco.

Heres something I found very interesting "I never work with four quarterbacks in the fall,” Kelly said, “but because they’re so close, we’re going to develop all four of them. The thing about Andrew and Everett, in time, they may become that quarterback who can do everything. But they won’t be that guy when we open on Sept. 3.”

This quote in context to other items previously talked about in the article like having a specific plan such as "a tebow plan" make me extremely skeptical that andrew or everett will be sparting on september 3rd. I know this was pretty obvious to most people, but I believe this is the closest Kelly has come to specifically stating that.

Additionally, given the fact that during spring Kelly mentioned that Rees was almost out of the QB race before a few good days at practice makes me believe without a doubt that like it or not, and barring a freak injury Dayne will be Notre Dame's starting QB come September 3rd.

IT IS RIDDICKULOUS.

The first 3 and out? I'm running up the white flag after the first incompletion.

This article is a good read for all of us who believe Kelly is the man. It touches on some things that that do not come from a stats sheet.

I ask all those still doubting Kelly to take the time to read this article all the way trough.
