A low (APR) rating is costly to Calhoun personally. His contract calls for him to donate $100,000 to a UConn scholarship fund if the program doesn't meet the APR. He also will forfeit his postseason bonus of $87,500, earned during UConn's run to the national title.
So it will cost Calhoun $187,500. I can't see the SEC putting such a provision in a coach's contract.
While it's a stiff penalty it still leaves the coach with an economic decision to juggle, "Should I send Mr 5 Star to study hall to bring up his GPA or make him shoot 500 free throw a day to up his 55% free throw average? I might get hit with the 100K APR Penalty but then win a National Championship and recruiting will be a breeze for the next 4 years.
I like the penalty but UCON's President And AD should have to cough it up as well, Academics is supposed to be the primary mission of the University. The Administration should be setting the bar and monitoring student progress not just lay it off on the coach.
