You know I never really noticed how many times the uniform actually changed over the years. Thanks for the info.

Your welcome. That's one of the things I've always loved about the Irish uniforms. We have a traditional look, but we're not like Penn State or Alabama where it's the exact same year after year after year.

There's a lot of that across college football right now. Brian Kelly seems to be pretty loose with the uniforms in regards to that stuff. If you noticed the players had a lot of different styles going on with their socks, long sleeves, and tights.

i wouldn't mind if they gave the players shamrock stickers to put on their helmets for big plays, etc.

i don't mind variety when it comes to things like short sleeve vs long sleeve or tights vs socks, but i would like to see navy underneath. i just think the white looks trashy.

I am soooo glad they ditched the numbers on the helmet.

I am happy with the current uniforms I just wish they would bring back the more darker glossier gold.

i would also love a little darker gold. ND can afford more gold. teams like pitt and gt wear lighter gold and we are above them!

I don't have a problem with them wearing white long sleeves, or white high socks (which I always associate with that game up at Air Force with Quinn at QB), but I think wearing tights underneath socks is just a really weird and messy look.

I think Rudolph was the first to wear them in 2010 (not sure if anyone did before that) to nurse his hamstring and then everyone started wearing them when it got cold out.

I'm guessing most fans would say no to that idea. I'm looking forward to the survey and seeing how many people want the shamrock on the helmet (if only for one game or a season), but I'm pretty confident that the number will be less than 10%.

I would say that shamrock stickers would be about the same.

Yeah the gold was not as shiny this year, but before in seasons past they were having major problems with the paint chipping off. Remember some games when an Irish player would tackle someone and gold flakes would go everywhere and there'd be this big red spot on the helmet?

I don't know if the chipping was always a problem pre-2010 and we just noticed it more with HD TV and all that, but clearly that's why they made a change.

I will say though, that ND played in a lot of gloomy games this year. If the sun isn't shining brightly and if there's no stadium lights, the helmets won't look shiny. You can look at some old pictures and see the helmets looking kind of dull.

I guess we should always have shiny helmets like some of the other gold-helmeted teams do...but they don't mix in real gold either.

the mirer/bettis era was a good look.

I think that will be among the top three or four "looks" over the years.

There is a strong tendency to like the uniforms we won the most in. I am sure the 1987-through the mid-90's uniforms will all be very highly regarded.

2009 was a bad year for the paint flaking off the helmets.

How long is our contract with Adidas? Any chance we go to Nike after this one is up? Just curious... no real problem with Adidas...

Domers,

Check out this pictorial of Notre Dame's uniforms throughout school history.

The Definitive Notre Dame Uniform History Pictorial | One Foot Down

Next week I'll be rolling out a 15 question survey and everyone is welcome to participate.

Hope you enjoy this!
Rocket-thanks I'm going to try and print it off and take it to someone who could do some small posters for a gameroom. if it works I'll let you guys know how it looks. It would be a beautiful pictoral history of the uni.

$60 million dollar deal ends after the 2013-14 athletic seasons. I know we've talked about it here before with people discussing what different companies should outfit the Irish. It will be one of the survey questions.

I'd say there's a very small chance a deal with Adidas isn't re-signed, probably a year or two before it ends.

That would be awesome!

I wish we could get better pictures from some of the era's.

It's crazy how few pictures are out there during the Faust era for example.

Keep me updated with that, for sure.

I believe when the switch was made from Champion to Adidas in 2001 the numbers became larger. You'll notice Champion used a very "short" looking and slightly unusual font for the numbers.

The Adidas manufactured numbers are much longer, some stretching practically from just below the collar to the belt. They seemed to get out of control large sometime around 2005 when Weis took over.

You'll also notice, the TechFit jerseys introduced in the middle of the season last year had much smaller numbers.

"Holtz also removed the names from the backs of the uniform and never used them over his 11 years in South Bend,"

The way it should be!

Maybe it is because a lot of people would rather forget it! Seriously, cameras were still film, my gut tells me that with the tech constraints people didn't bother when things weren't going well. Faust came in as the second coming. I remember how gut punched a lot of fans felt, when they realized a high school coach couldn't make it at Notre Dame.
