" Why couldnt ND go independent in all sports, I understand about the CT having automatic invites, but couldnt there be an Irish rule in all sports"?
This was debated ad nauseum back in 1995. Ask Digger. ND basketball was dying as an independent, scheduling was a difficult as was recruiting. Other non-football sports with the exception of Hockey which has it's own gig are/were in a similar situation.
ND did not have the clout in any sport outside of football. ND has a great Fencing program. Have you even heard of it, 6? Would you pay to watch? Would you watch if it were free?
When the BCS was formed ND had a recent NC. I'm not sure if there are any players on the team now that were born when ND last won an NC. If BCS was starting up today, ND might well be an Non AQ (along with the Big East)
They could create their own TV network like Texas and BYU?
Maybe but they are different types of markets. ND has a national following but how many fan in Utah tune in? Alabama? South Carolina?
Texas is a big dog in a regional market, probably a couple of regional markets but they're concentrated.
Same with BYU. There are Mormons everywhere but a more in Utah than the other states combined.
Doesn't BYU share time on the Mormon Network? Would Mother Angelica share her Eternal Word Network with UND? I think not.
Even with a cable network you have to have advertisers. Earl Campbell Used Car Sales might advertise in Waco on the UTX network but Brady Quinn Used Car Sales isn't going to pay to advertise in 49 states they aren't in. Sketchers probably would still advertise for ND games. But their now that's on NBC with millions of viewers. Will they pay for a spot featuring fencing or tennis, or golf?
I'll bet ND get a lot more viewers on NBC than they would with a subscription marketplace. During '07 and '08 posters here and on other boards would post, "I turned my set off. I refuse to watch anymore." (Funny part was they still harangued a missed block or tackle or dropped pass.) IF enough had turned off their sets NBC would have negotiated a smaller renewal package or dropped ND completely. They didn't. With a ND being on a cable provider or satellite, a disgruntled fan could call up their provider after the game if the phone wasn't broken and say "CANCEL THE @#$% ND CHANNEL!"
They could always sign back next year after the new head coach is hired.
Somebody more familiar with network costs, advertisers, and such will have to weigh in to amplify the pluses and minuses.
Bottom line, IF it's to ND's benefit, ND will do it.
