Wagon Wheel is wayyyyy overplayed

great song
but I don't care to ever hear it again haha
every lame acoustic player I've seen in the past 4 years plays it...and poorly!

There is this Canadian blues player who does a crazy good cover of it...I don't recall the name though...

for OCMS I'd pick the demo version of "Caroline"...DEMO...not the album cut from the last record

Hey all Texas Country fans
I'm in the process of being part of a Texas country and alternative country influenced acoustic duo...looking to start by doing a ton of awesome covers and some originals.

Does anyone have any suggestions on songs from some of the artists mentioned in this thread?
I have made a list of my own, but am just looking for additional suggestions...

Trying to spread the good music to the people of Pennsylvania.

Thanks

What is already on your list? Give us something to go on. Who do you like to play as covers currently? Lots of good music posted in this thread.

I was just one of the good 'ol boys that wasted a lot of hours in this thread. I probably could have been fired from my job for the day I spent here. I got nothing else done except going back and forth between I.E. and Youtube.

Was watching Standard Operating Procedure, a doc about what went down at Abu Graib (SP) prison.

There is a scene where one of the guards are told to play loud obnoxious music at late hours to prevent the prisoners from sleeping.

So the guard 1st plays hip-hop hooray by Naughty by Nature but after a few plays the prisoners all start singing heeeeeyyyy hoooooo

so he goes to a friend and gets master of puppets by Metallica, again after a while the prisoners get into it

So the gaurd goes to a thrid friend and plays some country and the prisoners cant stand it and start begging the guard to turn it off.

Moral; even while being detained and tortured, there is no worse torture than country music

Hey, to each his own, I guess. Growing up in Orange County, I am definitely in the minority of people that like country music.

Mainstream country music is torture...I agree
This thread is devoted to TEXAS country music. Not that garbage Nashville spews out.

Red Dirt music.
Americana if you will in many respects.

For the people who don't make useless posts...
I intend for us to do a bunch of originals at some point. But we're going to start with alot of covers to get a good 3 or 4 hours eaten up.

I've been learning alot of Chris Knight (Framed, Becky's Bible, Run From Your Memory) and Radney Foster songs.
Some Jason Boland too and and some Casey Donahew as well.

My co guitarist/harp player listens to alot of Son Volt and artists of that nature...DTB, Old 97's

We're really open to great songs even if they don't quite fit the Alt-Country label so much.

Old 97's are one of my all-time favorites. I have been listening to a lot of Justin Townes Earle lately. There is a cover band that plays a couple local bars near me and they play some Drive by Truckers that really gets the house going. Supersuckers are another good band for some good bar music - check out a song called Pretty F***ed Up - great drinking/bar tune.

I like me some Justin Townes Earle
His new record is pretty awesome.

Remember this is an acoustic duo (as of now) with the possibility of expansion...Praying for eventual expansion.

Even though I don't know if I'd want to be the vocalist in a full on group...but, I am in this duo so whatever I guess.

I have tons of music...I'm looking for single song recommendations

From outside references...because the songs we like may not be the one non musician fans like the best.

See, I am such a dope! I completely missed the word "duo". I caught the acoustic part, but missed the duo in there. My bad. Guess that would limit some of the song choices and arrangements.

You could definitely do the Justin Townes Earle. Maybe some Charlie Robison too.

the other guy plays mandolin from time to time if needed...and harmonica

Charlie and Bruce Robison are awesome...planning on a Bruce cover or two.

Maybe even a few Springsteen and Social Distortion covers.

Is it still floodin' down in Texas? Is Bob Wills still the king?

It's not currently flooding in any major way in Texas..
I love me some SRV
and Bob Wills is a good time.

But neither really fit the thread topic
start at the first page...read and listen through.
And most importantly....enjoy
There is some KILLER music coming out of the Texas the past 10-15 years...and most of the world doesn't know about it.

Oops, sorry. Thought the thread was about Texas music. But, I stand corrected if I misunderstood. I was about ready to start talking about Bobby Keys and Buddy Holly and the Crickets.

Sorry if I irritated you. I was just having a little fun.

So, I took some time and listened to a bunch of these songs, and I know this is going to get me drummed off of this thread. But I really didn't hear a heck of a lot of difference between this "Red Dirt Texas Music" and the stuff that's been coming out of Nashville for the past 20 years or so. None of which I like all that much. But, not a really big fan of "modern" country music. Like the traditional stuff, though--Hank Williams (Sr.), Waylon, Willie (to an extent), Patsy Cline, etc.

But I really do like Tom T. Hall. The storyteller. The Bob Dylan of country music.

OK, enough for me. Sorry to intrude. Enjoy the music.

I agree with you actually. Alot of the songs that got posted on this thread aren't terribly different from the sound of modern country.
There are some that stand out and are NOTHING like modern country.
I feel (from a songwriter's and musician's perspective, of which I am both), that the writing stands out and is far superior to mainstream country music...to the point where alot of these guys get paid good money when a mainstream artist stumbles across their music and makes a **** ton of money with it. (Keith Urban has had major hits with 2 Radney Foster songs and a minor hit with another)

Most of what got posted here is the far more accessible and poppy/commercial sounding stuff that tend to become hit songs. But the Red Dirt sound is USUALLY, not always, an almost rock country hybrid...

I think that Chris Knight (I don't know if he was mentioned on this thread) may be my favorite song writer of all time...he crafts an incredible story...generally it's pretty bleak and dark...but damn is he incredible.

No one will drub you off this thread, it's only me and you posting here...and I think a man's opinion is valuable and important, even if I don't share it.

I have every Hank Sr. recording. Drink and play guitar along with Willie Waylon Merle and the whole outlaw crew.
I love me some George Jones and Bob Wills will always be the king.

I also do the blues and rock and metal and some classical and baroque music for relaxation.

ooooh
ok
for the Red Dirt/Texas country fans out there

Homepage - KFWR
Ft. Worth

Badlands FM :: Homepage
Corpus Christi

2 radio stations with online streams of nothing but the good stuff, mainstream country music doesn't get a second of play...some of the more popular Texas bands that have found success nationally are still played.

Flying Alamo---Totally agree w/ your above post about Chris Knight, every song he sings I can SEE it literally...Great freakin songwriter...Went to see Cody Canada's new band the other night in Lawrence, Cody Canada and The Departed, it was there 5th show, and they are bad ***. A bunch of idiots in the crowd were yelling "Alabama" and "Boys from Oklahoma," Cody very politely told them to shut up cuz they were at the wrong show. Not sure if you have heard of them, but Cody and the bass player from Ragweed Jeremy Plato added three dudes including Seth James, who I hadn't heard much of, but he has a cool soul/blues vibe to his voice...Anyway a lot different than Ragweed, but in a good way, like em both, you should check them out if they come your way.....They also had the movie Taxi Driver playing on a projector behind them the whole time, pretty interesting.

I'm quite familiar with CCR and Cody and the Departed

I live in Pennsylvania...so there isn't a chance of them coming here! haha

Not to rub it in, but I saw Bleu Edmonson Wed, and Stoney Larue Friday. The Stoney show got shut down mid show due to the Fire Marshall and over capacity issues.
