Can someone explain to this outsider why the Obama invite was so unpopular, or why it was even an issue ? Here in Ireland, if the president visits a university, the whole place goes wild with excitement...

Wow, thank goodness!!!!! Now, IMO Notre Dame made a fantastic decision inviting Obama. It's strange to me how people look at it as a bad thing. Way to much hate in the world & one thing the bible preaches against.

The Obama invite was, in fact, very well received by most ND students and Alums. I would guess that 95% of the graduating class felt it was a huge honor to have the President of the United States speak at their graduation. However, there was the issue that Obama's stance on abortions is hypothetically different than the Catholic church's. A bunch of outsiders staged very vocal protests. A small number of ND students and faculty voiced their disagreement in a more civic fashion.
