This is a question pertaining to the semi-state championship of the 2010 Indiana Soccer tournament. In this game my HS faced a team from northern indiana, on the opposing team there was a hispanic player named Xavier, but whose jersey read Xavi, not having programs and being obnoxious HS students, some of the kids began to chant XAVI! XAVI! whenever said player entered or left eh game. Later on in the game Xavier flipped off the student section as he was leaving the game. Additionally, one of the african american coaches, whose last name was Smith, and was wearing a Bears hat bore a resemblance to "Lovie" smith, the Chicago bears head coach. So, again, being typical HS kids some of the students chanted. LOVIE SMITH LOVIE SMITH. After the game in an interview which appeared in statewide publications (The northern Indiana team lost 2-0) the head coach of this team called my school's fans "racist" as well as other terms derogatory of our school.
Since this is a sports forum my question is, "should a coach get involved in the behavior of opposing teams fans?"
PS. For the record, as someone who was at the game but did not participate in any "chants" but heard all that was said, i did not view any of the actions as racist but merely as many of the jests placed upon a visiting team in a "big game" environment.
