There are a ton of people on this forum bashing Kelly. That's led to me wondering what the alternative was, and I don't think there was any real alternative besides keeping Weis. So what do people think would have happened this year had we kept Charlie instead of going to Kelly?

8-4.

Maybe 9-3 with Weis.

But I had some deep pondering regarding this today:

Not being the best isn't good enough for ND's Alumni or fanbase, right? But how long will it take for us to realize that we are not going to be the perennial powerhouse year after year our grandparents got to enjoy. Look at Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and most recently Texas to name a few. Auburn is another great example.

We need to let a coach stay in place; The coach should get a good year in every 5 years or so.

In college football today, everything is so spread out regarding recruits.

Whether BK was hired or not, Charlie Weis was done like dinner. All of the Kelly bashing is bullshyte, it is too early to even consider giving up on Kelly and anyone who calls for his head this early does not have a clue what he is talking about.

i know if Weis was still the coach, we would have run more screen plays to this point in the season.

That's the problem, I have the impression we would be better with Charlie too. Hell, I wonder if Jimmy wouldn't have stayed if CW was coming back.

I'm not sure about 9-3 or 8-4 (although it's certainly possible), but I think everyone would agree that we would be better than where we are. If that's the case, and CW was in rebuilding mode and now BK is in rebuilding mode, are we not just a year further behind and in worse shape than ever?

BTW, the only reason I say Charlie would have been 8-4 is the fact his personnel are here and versed. Pro style recruits. Big run blocking juicy's...

And that also figures in a healthy Rudy, and Floyd. Now if Clausen and Tate would have stayed for their senior years, then we would have taken it all this year.

To be fair to BK, this isn't his personnel and they don't have the repetitions we needed.

If Weis would have had Diaco, we would have won 6 NCs by now.

And we would have run at least 60 - 100 screens this season.

We would have five more years of P*** poor football. And if George Bush had another term we would have had a repeat of the depression.

If we kept Weis, he would have done differently. Crist would have played better and Floyd would get more touchdowns. I think Floyd miss Weis' system, because he's so good when running down the field. That's where he's so good at. Under Kelly system, Floyd didn't go down the field as often as he did last year. That's my opinion.

He was fired so I try not to think about it... But I think his established offense allows us to be competitive in every game and makes up for our defense's shortcomings... Still slow and pathetically unathletic on average. I rather look at the future and hope the program is in the process of stopping it's 15 yr fall before it starts it's rise...

I've been one of Charlie's biggest defenders on this board since the day I signed up. I am still not off the CW bandwagon. And I agree with johnny, 8-4 or 9-3 would not be unreasonable this season with Weis here. In fact, Stanford is the only game I would bet against the Irish in said theoretical world.

However, long term...I now think Kelly was the right pick for ND. The players had become used to losing and needed someone to rattle their cages and change the culture. Weis did that when he came in, but his health problems and Ty's god-awful recruiting combined to take the chip off his shoulder. Kelly has a chip on his, and it will only grow with the way this season is going. ND is going to circle the wagons, find the guys who really want to be here, and come back like the phoenix sooner than anybody thinks.

Well the indians are here so we better circle them quick-like.

Great post brother.

I love BK. He's our new coach. He can do it. I just got to get used to his offense. Last year's O was so damn exciting!

He was significantly better than Ty... guy couldn't care less about working and recruiting. It all interfered with his golfing. I would pick CW 100% of the time over Ty.

Keep telling yourself that...

I liked jimmy but he got exactly what he wanted out of notre dame. He had a great season numbers wise. Golden's draft stock was as high as it ever woulda been. They weren't coming back

I do like the fact our coach is a little better physique wise, now.

I mean the front a s s jokes were getting old. I rolled a buddy up in my front yard over that ****.

The only thing I think would be different is that we would have beaten Tulsa. I think the rest would have played out the same. Maybe Dayne would have looked a lot better. The D would have been just as **** poor, maybe worse. Remember, what Charlie couldn't do was develop any player not a WR or QB. So, no change with the other players.

This thread got me thinking. What if Ara had taken a page out of Paterno's book and was still coaching Notre Dame? Try and wrap your brain around that.

And to answer the original question, this program would not be much better than we are right now. Maybe 1 more win. The team has consistenly found a way to lose over the past several seasons.

I've heard ND admin will force out any coach that threatens Rockne's record.

I heard that is why Lou left. I've also heard that it was because the academic standards were keeping him from getting the players he wanted. Not sure which if either is true.

Either way, I'm certain Charlie would have loved to have that problem...

Let's hope BK gets forced out for those reasons. I'd love to have a fifth statue at a gate for the next great ND coach.

Charlie Weis was a joke. His non emotional attitude got under my skin. He was so "ho-hum" and that infected his team and everyone was just used to losing. Does anyone remember the dismal 2007 season? He was not a head coach. The only thing he had going for him was one hand was slightly heavier than the other. I was glad to see him go.
