resulting in the ND student dying.

He said he would have practiced indoors that day.

I have a feeling this story may have legs. I hope no one involved raised an issue about this in advance and Kelly ignored it.

The student was tweeting about how scared he was on the lift prior to it tipping over. So it doesn't seem like a fluke gust.

What was said?

after the notre dame story ESPN showed a press conference of jim tressel FROM TUESDAY.

at one point in the presser JT was asked: "if he would practice outside considering the weather?" and he said something like "we will have to see because of the wind and we need to keep our camera guys safe"...

this was said ON TUESDAY BEFORE THE ND ACCIDENT EVEN HAPPENED.

thus, jim tressel not in any way, shape, or form criticized BK because HIS WORDS WERE SPOKEN PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT!

this thread is a joke.

My bad if it happened before. However, the comment as quoted by Stuart Mandel is more biting ...

I know in lacrosse the head coach was never the one giving instructions on filming and such. I guarantee you in football there are at least two degrees of separation from the head coach and the person in charge of those people.

Someone (and maybe multiple people) in charge of that kind of thing should have known the safety codes and said something. You cannot expect a 20 year old student to stick their neck out and say "ummm I think this is dangerous" and you cannot expect Brian Kelly who is trying to run a practice and keep track of a million things to be personally responsible either.

I have a feeling at least a couple heads will roll on this but expecting the head coach to know at what mph a structure like that becomes unsafe is ludicrous. That's the job of the guy in charge of filming.

All fair. But it certainly could be in a case like that where person X said hey we can't film today and person Y (head coach or someone else) said f that - we need film.

Well, I think it seems pretty obvious in retrospect that the camera guy shouldn't have been up there. Whether that means not taping practice or practicing in-doors, it's easy to see that.

My take on all of this is that Kelly/the head manager/anybody not actually up there probably never thought of it. I'm sure they were busy with everything else. Declan was clearly scared up there, but probably didn't really think it would fall...and in the end, decided it was less scary up there then slowly descending down and telling the head ball coach that he couldn't have tape of his practice because it was too windy.

I don't think (obviously, I don't know) Kelly or anyone else acted improperly here... but the collective chain of inaction ended up creating a tragedy.

If that is true, then this is something more than a tragedy...it is criminal negligence. But until we have a shred of evidence showing that happened, there's no reason to assume it did.

The whole thing is a terrible tragedy, but why can't you expect it? Shouldn't the kid bear some slight responsibility for not saying no? When I was 20, I was an M-60A3 Armored Crewman in the Ohio National Guard (before I transferred to Active Duty, in the Navy, a year later). There were many times that we would tell our Sergeants, "Sarge, if this were combat, I would have no problem doing that. But we're not in combat, and we aren't risking serious injury, or death, to do what you are asking us to do." The kid's tweet showed that he knew he was in potentially serious trouble, but he still had a choice. He could have said "No.", or "I'm coming down." It might not have been an easy choice, but it was still a choice.

Having said that, I hope his family somehow finds the strength to recover from what is probably the hardest blow life can deal you; the premature loss of a family member.
