While watching "the U" and NC, something I've known for many years. Miami fans stick the big one. Miami is playing a conference game against good (theoretically) North Carolina team, and the lower deck looks about 30% full. Everyone is so proud of being from "the U", but for years, their crowd has been MIA - mi. FSU is another 'great crowd' with the 'chop' and all that more often than not lately only fills up 3/4 of the stadium unless it is a big game.
On the other hand Oregon and Boise St. have travelling fan bases - and have for decades; even before they were good. I love how Boise color codes their sections of the stadium in orange, blue, and white. (We can't even get 50% green).
LSU, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and ND have to be among the top - but that is known (heck, we even sold out for W. Michigan).

So the question is who do you think has the best and worst loyal fan bases compared to perception?

I don't know about any other fan bases but when it comes to ND they have to have the most loyal, they sell out all the time and haven't put a National Champion caliber team on the field in years, (except maybe '05,'06)

No idea about the worst off the top of my head

So true - the only exception that I can think about was that Nebraska embarassment where half the crowd at ND wore red.

To get over my West Coast bias (since most western crowds are pretty lame), I'll throw out West Virginia as an underrated. Those dudes are crazy nuts.

Being in NJ at the game today blew my mind about how many ND fans there are accross the counrty. I knew it existed, but sometimes its good to be reminded of that....

My family is Notre Dame fans and i grew up a fan with zero ties to the university. When I was growing up it was easy to stick with them because they were dominant.

It is almost inherent for children to route for the team who is doing best at the time. Sometimes they stick with that best team but most of the time they come back to their roots ex. the local team, family team, etc.

There are alot of families who still love Notre Dame but do you think that Notre Dame's fan base will eventually decrease because the younger kids will move on to other "successful" teams and then eventually stick with that team because of ND's non-success? Thus decreasing the fan base....

Thinking the commercial fan base will disappear.

Rightly so.

ND needs to apply to the Ivy League. Just give up football and all hypocrisy. Rely on the dimes tossed at mass, or dollar bills hidden in envelopes. Just before the signing of the peace.
