Her Loyal Sons' biscuit has posted a great essay on his experiences trying out as a walk on kicker for Notre Dame during the Bob Davie years. Really good read - I was surprised at how much commitment it takes from the walk-ons to make it through the entire process.

I kicked in the freaking winter in the middle of an intramural field. I kicked with frozen balls that wouldn’t go anywhere. I was working with old leftovers from my cousin, and they froze in 15 minutes. I’d kick all 3 and then go chase. Freezing my balls off the entire time. And I lifted. And lifted.

Very interesting insight. Here's an article from (I think) ND's school newspaper from around that time regarding the kicker at the time and ND's kicking woes, which, if I remember correctly, started in the late Holtz years.

My brother's a senior at ND and a few of his friends are walk-ons. Good kids and they have to put the same or more effort in as the scholarship players without getting most of the perks. Still, one of them has made it onto the field and that's got to be one of the most amazing experiences.

Do they get to see the game for free from the sidelines? If so, I'd call that a perk.
