Starting to question why I still get so into games

I am at a cross roads, I have been an nd fan my whole life. I was born in 83 and my first memory of notre dame football was losing at Miami in 89. I have only been around for the downs and now i am starting to question why I still root for ND. First off I was such a big Charlie Weis fan it felt like I got shot in the stomach when he got fired. Although many agreed with this decision I did not. I know hindsight is 20/20 but I would like to propose the question how good would Notre Dame be RIGHT NOW with weis as coach. I could gurantee you Tate and Clausen would still be playing football for Notre Dame, these two left early to be 2nd round choices. If Weis was still there Clausen would practically be guranteed to be a top five pick with the numbers he had as a junior. I do like Brian Kelly and I do like the hire, I just feel the firing of weis was premature. I know I am in the minority but he was with this group of underclassmen and now I am just wondering what would of happened. This team would be 3-0. You could not argue with me that Clausen under center with Floyd and Tate on the outside and evans (i know he transferred) in the slot. One thing that Weis did that was great, was the deep ball. Michael Floyd is a savage, give him more than one shot deep, he will produce. I just feel as a life long fan I got cheated out of this season, it could of been geat but the administration jumped the gun and forced the fire. However, what I do like from KElly is that the oline is much better than what I have seen from a Weis group. D line too is better. I could of used some screens to allen tonight but this is just my rant. Once again this team is better than the record. Just please dont lose to pitt, i have to live in this city and put up with all these phony pitt fans.

1.) Paragraphs are your friends.

2.) I like Weis to, but he needed to go. If he was still here We'd be in the same spot possibly worse. Plus Jimmy and Golden were gone either way bud. Jimmy got what he wanted out of coming to Notre Dame and with the possibility of a work stoppage there is no way they risk it by staying.

3.) Then go effing root for another team. All I've seen is the bad times and I don't start pointless threads complaining and questioning why I root for them. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Well I think it's the vast array of emotions which the recent Irish teams have given us. Even if we haven't had the lasting elation of big wins, the games are highly entertaining. Extreme emotions are more addicting than petty ones. Watching ND blow teams out every week would be wonderful, but the act of watching the game would lose so much of its appeal. In every game this year the full gamut of emotions have been run, leading to a rich psychological experience, even if we have ended up on the wrong end of the spectrum in the last two weeks. It sucks to lose, no doubt, but one cannot deny the emotional investment received from watching a team like the Irish.

I'm a hopeless fan, I'll keep watching even if they lose and I dislike some of the calls, sitting in base defense, or whatever else may upset someone with the running of the team, for the simple fact that these games are highly entertaining and valuable for human emotions. I slap my head, yell, cheer, and dance every week, for a number of different reasons. I want ND to be elite again, but I'm also kind of wary of that, because I know the games won't be nearly as entertaining or complex.

Weis had five years but that wasn't enough time to prove himself. Kelly has three games and he's a certifiable disaster.

Let's see if this team can put together 4 quarters of football by the end of the year. I can wait at least that long.

I am not going to bash you and I feel very similarly. I will always be a true fan but the anger I feel from these losses are starting to be a problem.

With regards to Weis:

I am a well known Weis hater and wanted him gone but I will concede this.

We would be better RIGHT NOW if Jimmy and Golden stayed. But his down fall was defense period. We had a straight up no holds barred terrible defense. Now we have what I call a bad defense. If Kelly makes the same errors and does not correct the issues then he will have short tenure as well.

Just understand that until we get a defensive line that can cause serious penetration we will have major issues. Games are now and always have been one in the trenches having 5 star wrs is great but is like putting fixtures in a new house prior to pouring a foundation.

Weis was not a head football coach. What was not to like about him? I was happy he was hired as well, but his time came the year before last. Last year he had to put up or shut up, and unfortunately his schematic advantage did not play defense too well. Weis had his time, had his recruits in and still lost.

What we need to do as fans is keep perspective. New coach, new system, new defense, new QB. You are going to be prone to making those mistakes. Penalties are way down and we are being competitive in every game. We are in a position (so far) to win every game. Now its about closing.

Kelly is a disaster? Weis had 5 years to make it, which is the standard coaching tenure when attempting to turn a program around. 5 years gets your recruits in, by year 5 your first class is now seniors. Frankly I think Weis would have gotten blown out in the UM game, but I digress. A loss is a loss.

This was a bad team with Jimmy and Golden. Even without those top players and for the first time in years, I actually feel like we belong on the same field as our competition.

This loss stings (if only the refs had seen the play clock we would have been singing a different tune), but I don't feel like there is no hope.

Ok, after my less than 12 hours of venting I am back to normal, extremely hungover and looking forward to next week.

DC, I agree with you a 100 percent, Notre Dame needs to get big time linemen. For how bad the defense has been this season I feel it is much different than last season. This D makes plays, they put the team in position to win last night by shutting down msu in ot.I know it is misleading with the yards against but Notre Dame got to the qb they had 4 sacks and were extremely physical. It is still a work in progress.

Did anyone else notice last night before the half when MSU went for the qb sneak on 3rd and short, they had 9 men on the line of scrimage? I was flipping out on how the line judge did not make that call. I know it didnt end up in points but that was a huge missed call. That was bad and of course the block in the back right before regulation ended.

Are you serious????????? A certifiable disaster? Holy sh!t man....JUMP!

(I told my wife I'd stay away from the Internet all week last night because I knew I'd see posts like this. Sigh.)

Dude...it's been 3 games. 1 solid win, 1 loss without your starting QB for half the game, and a really tough loss IN WHICH VEGAS HAD US AS UNDERDOGS. In case you didn't know, Vegas is pretty damn good at these things.

I'm sure you called Lou Holtz a certifiable disaster also after a few games, right? How about Nick Saban? Interesting how bad their first 2 teams were, and how they won NCs later with their teams b/c their ADs weren't crazy enough to listen to fans like you.

C'mon man, it's 3 effing games, get a grip. Be better than that. The constant losing does SUCK, but I keep saying this...change isn't an instant, it's a process. The biggest hurdle BK has to get over is the culture of losing. I knew we were going to lose last night in the first half when Floyd lost that fumble to go up 14-0. And I'm sure the players have that same sinking feeling when things go wrong. BK is going to change that culture, but it takes time.

Oh, and Weis WOULD NOT HAVE US PLAYING BETTER FOOTBALL RIGHT NOW! JC would be in the pros, and we hsould have lost to MSU last year AT HOME, but we got extremely lucky (rewatch the game if you don't believe me). I love Weis, but thank God he's in KC and not here. I'm staying the course with Kelly, and those who want to jump, please do so and never come back.

Irish forever...

I think fortwayne was defending Kelly and questioning the people who said Weis deserved more time but are abandoning Kelly - different punctuation could have changed the way it read.

But more importantly, I think ND should change it's name to"Fighting Stockholm Syndrome". We all seem to be held captive by them; tortured continuously by them; we could walk away, but we don't - because we somehow love our captors and keep coming back to them for more pain and suffering.

I'm a 34 year old man who gets WAAAAAAY to into the exploits of 18-22 year old college kids. It's an addiction I can't quit. I'll be back to crying in my beer next week too.

Go Irish.

Thank you friend. I find it interesting the same posters after the Stanford loss last year who thought CW was worthy of a sixth year have after only three games this year decided BK is a failure.

A little bit of consistency over four quarters and ND would be 3-0. By season's end, I hope they can develop that consistency. A new starting quarterback, several "green" players getting meaningful minutes, new coaching staff...I'm willing to give BK some time.
