Like most of you (judging by the manic depressed posts) I was very low emotionally after the game. If you count last season, we have experienced 5 or 6 heart breaking losses in a short time. I worry about the psyche of this team right now but there were many bright spots to build a winning program on. I think we will be happy with this program by the end of the Season headed into next year.. Here are some of my observations on the morning after I woke up, and ackwardly asked the MSU loss to leave......
Crist Career Day- He still seems to decide before the snap who he is throwing to, which is awful but his touch looked better at least.... I am speculating that Crist may be one of those QBs that throws the ball with more velocity during games vs practice. I think he gets amped up and thus brings the heat during games. It is apparent that in timing routes where Rudy, and Floyd aren't ready to get the football on their routes. I know they need to be ready at any moment in the route to get the ball, but those two are BIG time playmakers and seem surprised to be getting the rock.... not acceptable!
Floyd- I would have sat him down after his fumble and made him watch a couple series... he looked disengaged and he looked like he lacked passion. I have been an advocate of getting him in the mix early and he flopped at first. But then, he seemed to get his head straight....come back and play very well for us down the stretch. I think the next guys success is crucial for Floyd to continue to get meaningful touches.
Theo- Career day, he looked shaky the first two games, but I think he finally gained the experience and the needed confidence. I hope he conitnues to progress.... he is a big piece of our Offense.
Defense- (sad face) We look solid, stuffing the run, making plays then.... we poo on ourselves and give up a big play. My personal opinion is this unit can be really good, but we lack depth in important areas that are starting to really show.
Safety- If I hear Jamoris Slaughter is progressing nicely one more time I am going to puke... I mean come on, he either can go, or can't...and the fact we are in such a bad position schematically with out him suggest he is either injured much worse than we think, or that the coaching staff really likes Motta... I hope it is the latter. Also McCarthy... a soft tissue injury...ie pulled hamstring... there has to be someone on campus that can play safety...
Outside contain- insert a WTF on this one.... if Teo doesn't run it down inside out, or a safety doesn't make a tackle... we have very little outside force contain... WTF..this was supposed to be a strength of this D.... Help is on the way with Recruiting... LYNCH..TUITT..BURTON..GRACE to name a few... we will be rock solid / elite hear going forward..
3rd down Offense and Defense- We seem to be struggling making proper reads on offense and getting off the field on defense... as the season progresses, this will improve drastically, the better Crist gets in this system the better he will make his progressions... or he will actually start using his reads vs picking a presnap target and forcing it.
A loss is never ok, whether on the Road, or in OT or whatever... but by the end of the season, I think we are going to see many of these issues get corrected, and we are going to be very happy and excited going into next season.
Our First 5 or 6 games are brutal, and we new it, we have no depth at crucial positions and this is showing early... I am not giving up on the Irish... We need to learn how to close out games.... this will come.... GO IRISH
