Notre Dame Football - Defensive Back Recruiting Overview

List of ND's current options from ISD

A good but obvious point:
For Notre Dame to earn a legitimate shot at landing Phelps or any other elite defensive player with a plethora of offers from schools with good defensive reputations, Notre Dame must improve its defense and its defensive reputation this fall. Most of the elite recruits make football-first decisions. Thus, like it or not, Notre Dame's academic reputation will only be a bonus to most elite recruits. If Notre Dame's defense shows vast improvement this fall, Phelps and other big-time defensive backs will visit South Bend. Until then, I am quite skeptical of Notre Dame landing even official visits from most players of this caliber.

I thought we would attack this postion more this cycle. Any thoughts?

How much more should they "attack" it?

They handed out about a dozen and half offers to DB prospects. About a half dozen already committed elsewhere.

Recruits still have visions of ND DBs badly out of position last year. We hope Diaco and Martin will remedy that image but nobody has seen their product yet. Preseason camp hasn't even started. Diaco had one year at UC. In 6 weeks Martin will be coaching in his first Div 1 game.

UC's Pass Defense actually was worse than ND's. The NCAA ranked ND #76 and UC #78 with a difference of 3 yds/game. Diaco defense was torched by the Gators for 659 yds of Total Offense. The Gators at 117 yds rushing (5.2 yds/carry) and 482 yds passing (15.5 yds/completion and 13.4 yds/attempt) If those last two numbers look close together it's because the Gators completed 31 of 36 passes, 86%!

UC's defense gave up 60 fewer yds to PIT than ND did but they gave up 90 yds more to CON than ND did.

Simply put a lot of recruits want to see if there's a difference or if it's more of the same.

Best thing for ND is for the recruits to wait to see how the season plays out.

The recruiting gurus all say Kelly and Company are working their butts off and they're doing much better than Weis and Company. Time will tell.

Scout currently has ND #9 in the recruiting arms race. Commitments from Lynch and Hayes next weekend will bump ND up a slot or two. Currently Scout hasn't assigned Stars to kickers Brinzda will get at least two which with Lynch and Hayes would put ND at an average of 3.5 Stars/commit. That's good. Texas is up at 4.0 which is outstanding and where Southern Cal was routinely under Carroll. I don't expect Kelly to bring in a Top 5 Class this year. But a Top 10 Class with 9 or 10 wins this season will set the table for the next class.

There's still 7 months in this recruiting cycle.
