Charlie Weis talks football, favorite charity | WSBT - News, Weather, Sports South Bend | Notre Dame Sports

By ERIC HANSEN Tribune Staff Writer

6/18

SOUTH BEND — Charlie Weis strides into the local sandwich shop like he is just another guy with a long list of honey-do projects staring him down.

...

“Kids (former ND players) still text me and call me, and I text them back and call them back. But I think it’s important for me not to be a distraction. I try to keep my distance, because I think it would be unfair to the current regime to, all of a sudden, be around.”

...

After roughly 45 minutes of people brushing past Citizen Weis, a young boy spots him from a nearby table and nudges him back into the spotlight for a moment.
The boy explains his father, Lance, is in surgery and if Weis could just sign this scrap piece of paper for the dad. The mom looks on from a distance, trying to take a cell phone photo from an awkward angle.
“Come on over,” Weis says to the mom.
He has the boy sit down next to him, drapes his arm around him as if they’re long-lost pals, and cheeses for the camera.
“Best Father’s Day present ever,” the grateful mom says backing away.
Which gets Weis thinking about his own Father’s Day gifts for a moment, with Hannah & Friends Farm jumping off the blueprints and into reality topping the list.
“Although it didn’t work out the way we would have liked as far as being the head coach at Notre Dame, this neighborhood for people with different abilities will be our legacy when we’re gone,” Weis says. “We’ve come to believe this is the reason we came here.”

Good guy. Think he would have had ND a winner eventually, but happy Kelly is here.

While Charlie may have dissapointed us on the field he is a damn good person. This reminds me of when he visited the kid with cancer and let him pick the first play of the ND Washington game, and then ran it. Charlie is a class act and I wish him well in the NFL this coming season.

Charlie will always be a class act. I was one of his homers as I am now a Kelly homer.

I'll never forget where we came from.

I hold no grudge against Weis. Can't say I would say the same thing in regards to Golfingham.

He's a good guy and I really wish things coulda worked out for him here. Even though he wasn't successful in the win column he put nd in a lot better postition then before he was here and he also graduated kids. I'll always root for the guy.

I was a homer for CW. I still think he is a class act and would have gotten us to the top eventually. We just don't have thy thing needed to wait haaha. Either way I am in full support of Kelly and believe he too can take us to the mt top. I hope CW has great success in the NFL but why he's done withhis charity is just amazing and I hope that exceeds any success he has in football.

Thank you, Coach Weis, for trying as hard as you did for ND and for being a good human being. It didn't turn out the way most of us here wanted it to, but I'll always respect Charlie.

Charlie is a great person, but I don't think he could have got to the top at ND. His head coaching skills were lacking.
