Cincinnati's Greater Catholic League and our 2010 recruits

What's the deal with Cincinnati's Greater Catholic League? There are only 4 schools in that league and yet 4 of the 23 recruits we signed (Welch, Hendrix, Massa and James) are from that league.

I don't know much about that small league but if we're recruiting on a national basis, I'm just surprised that 17% of our recruits came from a small 4 team league....I think Rudolph came from that league as well...

Any thoughts?

I go to school at Xavier right now and the talent in this area is out of this world. I mean these teams win national championships. They play the best teams not only in Ohio but in the rest of the nation.

I like it! Got to get the good local kids. Snatch them from underneath Ohio State's noses. It's a smaller league, but I know last year two of the teams were nationally ranked for a lot of the year. Hendrix and James were national recruits that could have gone almost anywhere.

I'm a St. X grad myself, and this is without a doubt the most talented league in the state of Ohio. Almost every year one of the teams from this league plays in or wins the Ohio division 1 (big schools) state championship. It's been too long since ND had a pipeline going to the GCL South schools.

Yeah, this year they had a number of talented players that ND wanted that also wanted ND. All four of those guys were evaluated and pursued by Weis and company under a national search. They weren't kids Kelly found with his helicopter in a local search.

Welch and Hendrix verballed to Weis but neither were the first choice at their position. Massa got consideration but Weis chose Hendrix and Rees as the better fit for his offense irrespective of geography or league affiliation.

James was a highly regarded OL prospect that visited ND a number of times while Weis was in charge. James was one of 6 or 10 highly regarded OLs that ND went after and got 2. And James wrestled with his decsion up until the night before he signed.

As for the 17% factor had things gone as hoped ND could have had a similar number of players from one school, St Thomas Aquinas.(Joyner, Riggs, Bernard, Linder). Instead with Bernard's decommittment ND came up with zero. Pipeline shutdown! The Cretin-Derham Hall pipeline didn't pan out this year either. But like the GCL it should still be a starting place for Peloquin to looking at underclassmen and cultivating those relationships for the future.

The GCL has many more than 4 teams. 12 to be exact split into 3 divisions. GCL South is where Massa, Welch, Hendrix, and James come from. The South is comprised of the 4 big catholic Cincy high schools. It is not secret that Cincinnati and Cleveland play some of the best football in the country...

Ryno 24 are any of the 4 still all male?

The other GCL schools (not the South schools) play in smaller divisions in Ohio athletics, and do not regularly play the GCL South schools in football. Though they have the same name, they are effectively different leagues. All four GCL South schools (St. X, Elder, Moeller, and LaSalle) are all-male Catholic schools. There is quite a bit of history between these schools and ND as well. Kyle Rudolph went to Elder, Rocky Boiman went to St. X, and Gerry Faust coached at Moeller before coaching at ND.

I'm a defensive backs coach for one of the "smaller" schools in the GCL North. The talent in the small schools in the conference is strong too, but we don't play the big boys in the GCL South.

Kettering Alter has won state 2 years in a row and produced a number of DI recruits that past few years. Nick Mangold (Center for Jets) is from there. Chaminaide Julienne produced Javon Ringer.
