Nice write-up on the Irish at Number 14:

USC lands No. 1 class on National Signing Day 2010 - NCAA Football - SI.com

Head of the class: OT Matt James, DT Louis Nix.

Buzz: Even with the change in coaches from Charlie Weis to Brian Kelly, Notre Dame maintained one of the top classes in the nation with 10 four-star pledges. The Irish received an influx of talent on offense, particularly at the quarterback position. Andrew Hendrix, the No. 13 pro-style passer in the nation, was one of three QB commits for the Irish. Hendrix, from Cincinnati Moeller, features a quick release and outstanding size. Notre Dame added a bruising tailback in Cameron Roberson as well as three wideouts. Tai-ler Jones, the No. 19 receiver in the country, runs great routes. Tight end got a boost in Alex Welch, while the offensive line added two four-stars in Christian Lombard and Matt James -- the No. 14 tackle in the country. The No. 7 defensive tackle in the nation, Louis Nix, leads the defensive class. Nix is a very physical presence in the middle. He'll be a huge help for four-star linebackers Prince Shembo and Kendall Moore. Versatile athlete Danny Spond provides good athleticism and size to what is another highly ranked class for the Irish.

Big fish that got away: DE Chris Martin (California).

i am really excited to see what the dline prospects turn into, heggie and schwenke seem like projects with great potential and nix is hopefully that monster we need on the inside, 320 coming out of highschool is huge! maybe we can start calling him Mt. Nix!!! also utupo seems to be a real quality player kind of under the radar, losing leuders and martin stung bad but hopefully these guys will pan out. I cant wait until spring ball.

Coach Kelly did a fine job of salvaging a great recruiting class. My only disappointment was the loss of Chris Martin and Geo. Benard....but that was not the fault of our coaches. These guys made the right choice but obviously were led astray....by you know who!

considering what he had to deal with and the time restraints, Kelly did a fine job. next year will be even better.

Its a good class overall (especially considering the coaching change), but like last years we missed on key positions

i cant say i could be unhappy with this type of ranking and these kind of kids.

time will always tell but this appears to be a kick save and a beauty on the recruiting trail this year. next year the proof will be in the pudding.

I feel like everyone leaves out Lombard. He is going to be an awesome guard. I guess he was mentioned but I almost see him being tied with James and Nix as 3 of the great get's in this class.

The fans, like the recruiting services, largely forgot Lombard because he wasn't in the news all season nor in the recruiting wars. He verballed a year before and without camps, combines, nor competing offers and official visits he languished in the minds of most.

Exactly. I wrote the same thing last year about Lombard and Daniel Smith. Smith was a 4 star, verballed to ND, didn't go to camps, got hurt, and suddenly everyone forgot about him. Both kids are studs who had the nerve to stick by their commitments, and not take other OVs and allow their facebook walls to become recruiting wars, and they lost stars and hype in the process. Doesn't take away from the fact that they can both still ball, and are important members of this class. If they had done the hat thing on ESPNU on NSD, we would be lauding CW for getting them on BK for keeping them. Instead, they are forgotten by the recruiting sites. Whatever...glad they're ND men!

luckily who rivals chooses as top recruiting classes doesnt matter. like most things in sports its all about hype and what espn feels will sell more advertising at a given moment.
