Seantrel Henderson, a 6-foot-8, 338-pound tackle from Cretin Derham Hall who is USA Today's Offensive Player of the Year, attended the Minnesota basketball game Saturday. He and his father, Sean, visited the Gopher locker room along with Minnesota head coach Tim Brewster and recruiting coordinator Dan Berezowitz. The Gophers are hoping that they can convince the talented tackle to stay home.

This was on ESPN rumors today:

"Meanwhile, his dad also hinted that Henderson wants to be a student-athlete -- not just an athlete who has to go to class. The final visit Henderson will make is Notre Dame, so some are speculating that he's favoring the Irish. He's also considering Miami."

There is also a tweet on Dan Scofield's Twitter saying, "Notre Dame will have the last word with Seantrel Henderson on Friday."
about 21 hours ago from web

- For those who didn't know (like me) Dan Scofield is a writer with Bleacher Report - which I know has been a questionable source in the past.

I thought I remembered hearing that we would make it back up to Minnesota to visit him, but this doesn't mean he is coming here this weekend does it?

If we are going there, can Kelly visit again, or does it legally have to be some of the other coaches?

Thanks in advance for any info on this.

Mike Frank from ISD was the first to report this either yesterday or 2 days ago, that he was hearing that Henderson was going to give ND the final visit. It won't be Kelly, but it's still great for the asst coaches to get in there last...

Uncommitted: Where will Seantrel Henderson go? - MaxPreps News

by Dave Kinder 1/26

The crystal ball is mighty murky. Seantrel Henderson’s college destination appears to be the best-kept secret since the Atom Bomb.
...
Lemming noted that Henderson is only the second offensive lineman he has ranked No. 1 in 31 years. The other was Bill Fralic of Penn Hills (Pittsburgh, Pa.) in 1980.

...

Seantrel not only has natural ability (he bench-presses 350 pounds and has run 40 yards in an unreal 4.89 seconds), but he has benefitted greatly from the tutelage of assistant coaches Ray Hitchcock and John Alt, both former NFL linemen. Hitchcock calls his young protégé "real patient with his hands. He doesn’t turn his head shoulders. If there’s a chance he might get beat, he can recover. He’s also very good at zone blocking.
"He hasn’t given up a sack in two years. He gave up one as a sophomore. We ran behind him 75 percent of the time and also pulled him. He never gets tight-end help. Basically, he’s on his own and is not blockable." For the future, Hitchcock points out, "He has to work on finishing his blocks, because he is so used to dominating guys. He also can work on his technique and run blocking. There’s not much – he’s ready to play college football and play right away."

Kinder thinks there's a 50% chance he goes to OSU, Southern Cal and Iowa are 20% each and ND and UF 5% each.

In early February he will take the ACT test, hoping to raise his score from 17 to 19 to qualify for a college scholarship. Sean Henderson said that his son still could qualify by maintaining a B average in his core classes for the rest of the year, but Seantrel is confident he will get at least 19 on his next try.

Hit those books!

I don't know much about Dave Kinder, but I didn't put much stock in this because I don't think Iowa is really much in the mix lately. Kirk Ferentz was supposed to have an in-home with Seantrel, but it was cancelled. It may have been Seantrel, it may have been Ferentz, but either way I don't think it sounds very good for Iowa. I think 5% is a little too small, as well. I don't think we have a great shot by any means, but I think our chances are better than that. Also, he doesn't have U of M listed on there at all, and I think they still have a shot in the dark with him.

I found Iowa surprising as well. If Kinder read IrishEnvy he would have known about Iowa's inhome cancellation a week ago like we did.

I understand this is probably nothing more than remaining as optimistic as possible, but the Henderson situation reminds me of the Manti Teo recruitment from last year. No one gave us a shot at Manti all year long, but we seemed to hang around right to the very end. I think most 'experts' expect Henderson to announce Ohio St. at this point, but I wouldn't count Notre Dame out. Especially now with news that Kelly have the last opportunity to meet and talk with him.

17 ACT Score.......not so sure this is going to work at ND...........you know? I know they relax the rules for Football players but I bet the majority are still in the 20-30 Range. He is talking about just getting up to a 19......???? How about a 24?

Yeah, I couldn't agree more wth Vern, he needs to raise that ACT or it won't matter which school he chooses

I don't think the staff would be working this hard for this kid if they didn't think they could get him in, they are probably a little more aware of what's going on than us.

There are many ND football players that were admitted with a 17 ACT and graduated on time 4 years later. I doubt there's any school's admissions department that scrutinizes student athletes more closely.

The NCAA requires a combination of GPA and Test Score. It's a sliding scale, a higher GPA allows a lower Test Score for qualification. Likewise the higher the test score, the lower the corresponding Test Score can be.

ND could be requiring a higher score than the NCAA they've done that on occasion but it's probably a case of low GPA with the 17. I read that out of the father's comments that as long as he maintains a B average in his core courses for the rest of the year (that includes the semester after NSD) he'll be all right. That speaks to the NCAA Sliding Scale, raise the core GPA and a higher test score isn't necessary.

Maintaining that B average also show Admissions personnal like ND's Dan Saracino that is a student capable of doing the work when he applies himself. Like many young stud athletes he may have cruised thought his early HS classes through his own lack of interest or teachers that waived him through.

Paddy Mullen has a low score and 2.2 GPA. ND Admissions required him to take courses and get certain grades his Senior year to demonstate his capabilities. He met those goals and was admitted.

ND has one of the finest tutorial programs in the nation. I've had student athlete's parents rave to me over how their son changed for a lackadaisical student to a diligent one. ND's tutorial don't write the papers nor take the tests for the athletes but they do teach them how to study, how to attack problems, how to better understand important concepts. And they track attendance, homework, and test scores. Those parents told me Admissions scrutiny during recruiting and the Tutorial Program are key factors in why marginal HS students can succeed academically at ND.

Keep in mind ND Admissions has refused to admit some high profile athletes of high profile high schools. Walter Payton's kid was not admitted despite going to St Viator. Carson Palmer was told to improve grades/test score as was David Terrell but chose not to and took the easy path to USC and UM. Payton's son prospered as a RB at Miami.

Yeah, fitz... you bring up a really good point, what's your opinion on this Vern?

As I have read on isd he is trying to get his grades up more not just act, because he said raising his grades; he feels like he did it on his own compared to taking acts and getting that up enough and be able to slide by, he wants to get both of them up. I guess he's doing better because it seems like things are starting to heat back up, but he's kind of in a similar situation wth Christian jones

It's a good attitude being demonstrated by both of them. Best wishes to both.

I was actually one of those tutors for a couple of years. The kids are good people but were never taught how to succeed in academics. Honestly they are more of a reflection on past education than anything else a lot of the time. Some of them are just bad news too obviously - one former Domer who now plays in the NFL called my fiancee a b#&@* when she refused to let him cheat off of her. The ones I worked with for extended periods basically didn't need me anymore by the time they graduated.

Seantrel and Jones really seem like the good ones though that are about working their butt off to get in even if they end up not coming to ND. I hope they both get their education because they seem like they value it - even though they seem to be studs and very well could be playing in the NFL soon.

I am not convinced about Seantrel though because all the good things seem to be only coming out of his dad's mouth still like I've said before.
