JUCO QB in ND Future?

JUCO QB in ND Future?

Keith Arnold NBCSports.com

Speaking of quarterbacks, a few weeks ago, I heard some rumors that Kelly and his staff were looking to bring in another quarterback to the class, perhaps as a reaction to the "few months" of conversations between Hendrix and the Gators' staff. The rumors pointed to Dayne Crist's backup from his days at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, Bret Visciglia. Visciglia was an All-Conference and All-State junior college player and has received interest from both Tennessee and UCLA, and rumors had Notre Dame's staff poking around as well.

Thanks to the magic of the internet, I found Visciglia and got to the bottom of it. Here's what he had to say.

"My coach at LA Valley College has been in contact with Notre Dame," Visciglia emailed me. "I am very close with Dayne Crist and he has mentioned my name to the coaching staff. I have not talked to Coach Kelly, but look forward to shortly. I'm hoping I could possibly add depth to the program."
No word on whether or not Visciglia would be a scholarship player or not, but he'd be a great addition to the depth chart, adding some collegiate experience behind Crist and in front of early enrollee Tommy Rees. Personally, I'd much rather have a quarterback that wants to be a part of the program than worry about guys that may or may not be coming. Notre Dame rarely entertains junior college transfers, but if Visciglia can prove he's academically fit and up to speed, Irish fans should welcome him with open arms.

ND does accept superior students for transfer from JUCO but it's a case by case basis. It hasn't happened often with athletes in the past 30 years as most that go the JUCO route do so because they can't meet the minimum academic requirements for the NCAA Clearinghouse (Div 1 Eligible base on core course GPA and Test Score). Most of those will still be deficient by ND standards after a year or two at JUCO as they'd be taking remedial classes and be entering ND pretty close to an academic freshman although they have 2 years of eligibility shot. Consider that they'd have 3 years of eligibility left while most likely needing 4 years at ND to graduate. That would be fine with SEC schools but ND expects their student athletes to graduate.

Some academically eligible athletes go the JUCO route to get early PT and don't need the remedial work. They could be academically competent for the ND classroom but again consider what is the likelihood that courses taken at the local JUCO are equivalent to those offered at ND.

I went back through past years in Scout and Rivals looking for a profile of Visciglia to see if there was any academic information. I didn't find a HS profile. He was a backup to Crist and I don't think he saw a lot of HS action.

Coming from Notre Dame HS he should have a decent academic background but who knows.

Keep in mind this was a kid that Crist played with so there's a mutual friendship. I'll offer that Visciglia is a consderable step up from Montana. But unless he's really blossomed in 2 years of JUCO he's a kid that didn't get much of a sniff as a HS senior.

He doesn't have the creditentials that Sharpley had. I don't think this kid is a Josh Heupel waiting to step on the ND campus and lead the Irish into the Top 10. He may provide improvement over the walkons on campus now - IF he could clear ND Admissions.
