Anybody watch that thing on ESPN about Miami in the late 80s early 90s? I thought the show really tried to put a positive light on those teams and may not have been very objective. That said, it was pretty cool and had I been able to understand what was going on at the time( I was 4 in 91) I would have hated that team, but they did seem to bring a community together and I like the swagger those teams played with. All the dancing and crap they did isnt right but they went out with a bad ass attitude. I think if a team/program can find a medium between that attitude those teams played with along with a respect for the opposition, they would have a recipe for success.

Yes I watched it…learned a lot about the community and the culture…. But I hated those teams and still do…all 3 of the Florida schools. Didn’t look like Erickson had a backbone…. The players were running the team. A great analogy when they referred to him as a substitute teacher, he is there but no one was listening or following him.

I caught part of it only because I could not find the remote. . I wonder how many of those athletes attended class. I have never been so passionately against a team as the Hurricane of the 80s and 90s. It is the Dolphins' "job" to bring the city together.

Why did ESPN even bother?

I was born in 1990 so I did not start following football until 1998, but I was watching the documentary on the hurricanes and I saw a connection between the current Florida teams now and the hurricanes team of the 80's. I am not sure the whole deal with the Miami teams but the 25 or however many arrests the gators have accumulated since Urban Meyer has been there and the attitude they play with was what I thought of when I watched the documentary

ESPN tried really hard to spin them in a good way. What was the 2 Live Crew guys name? How about that guy saying how he didnt pay any players for big hits and just wink at the camera after. I would like to see a more objective documentry on these guys. Erickson talking was funny. Seemed like even in the interview for the show he knew that he had no control of that team.

I quit watching tonight after the Johnson segment (when I finally found the remote.) I really could not stand Miami during the convict years, especially Jimmy Johnson.

I just don't understand why ESPN would bother with a show about those assholes. Maybe they are running out of ideas. I'm glad I don't have to see anymore commercials promoting that show.

Yea Neutered, I guess I was a little too nice in my first post. F miami. Camo is never fashionable outside of a combat situation anyway. That guy totally fumbled. ND ROCKS. Glad you found the remote brother!

``For Canes fans, this will be a reminder of what they loved about this team. For Canes haters, this will be a reminder of what they hated about this team,''

This quote from the guy making the film, seems spot on.

Thats interesting that the university of miami didnt want any part of it. especially because the film almost tried to justify the behavior. Maybe somebody in the administration realized that despite all the success on the field it doesnt condone criminals playing for your team.

I agree with you. I stopped watching it after the part with notre dame. I couldn't watch anymore about those thugs

Here's what a couple U$C fans said about it:

It actually gave me a new found understanding of why things were the way they were down there.... If it wasn't for "the U" football program, a lot of those guys would be robbing me every time I visit South Beach for vacation. That program gave kids a chance to escape bad situations, yes they could have used a bit more discipline but it seems there was a method to the madness.

I thought it was awesome. Jimmy Johnson is unbelievable. Talk about a coach his players would die for...the guy defended everything those dudes did against an all white, uppedy administration that wanted nothing to do with their representing that university. And whoever the WR was that patented the "George Jefferson" end zone dance made me spit spray my beer all over my aunt's carpet. That guy was $$$$$.

I was young when the 80's Canes were stepping off planes wearing fatigues - my first real rememberances of the U. were more Sapp, Torretta, Dennis Erickson-oriented. Melvin Bratton looked like he was 'the guy' on that offense with Kosar and Vinny Testes calling plays. What happened to him in the pro's? Did the knee injury in the natty championship game do him in? If so, that makes Willis McGahee even more of a man IMO. What McGahee did to come back from that knee tear in the Fiesta Bowl against An Ohio State to become a 1st round draft pick and pro bowl RB is ridiculous.

It was a very cool documentary.

I DVR'd it and will watch it when I get a chance, but it's amazing how people take different views on things. Sounds like typical SC fans...

It's All About The U.

I was a little too young to remember those teams, so I have no problem with the U at all.

I tvo'd it, love that era and Catholics Convicts II made me an Irish fan for life...

one note: It never ceases to amaze me how thug players (especially from the U and USC) can talk about Notre Dame like so, "I don't like them, I don't like anything they stand for."

I am always like, wtf!? Class, Dignity, Academics and a winning tradition????.... wow, what a horrid combo to stand for...

if only we had more murders and drug dealers... maybe we'd have some respect around here...

funny how they still complain about the fumble call... if I recall we got hosed the next year and they won the title... so blah blah blah

people have to remember that any documentary has some biase regardless of how impartial they try to be. The director was clearly a Miami fan. It was interesting to watch the changes over the years. Itseemed like Schnellenbergerand Johnson actually hadcontrol over the program. They may have been "thugs" but they clearly respected there coaches. When erickson came in is when it hit the fan because the team took over.

Personally I liked it, I thought it was funny how cocky they were. It was pretty mest up how Jimmy ran up the score on Faust when it was his last game coaching ND.

Heres an interesting debate on coaching. Is it running the score up if you put your back ups in and they still score? Is it fair to the backups who practice all week to have to just run the ball up the middle? Unfortunate it happend against ND and in Faust last game but IMO you have to coach the backups the same as the starters.

Jimmy Johnson said in the film that the backups were in. I dont know if that was true or not. Maybe one of the guys here who actually watched the game and was over the age of 5can help.

I think he put some in at the very end, after the score was 51-7. Even the announcers were knocking Miami for keeping the starters in so long and doing what they were doing.
