Looks like the Irish aren't the only ones who can't tackle

Great find!

"If a guy doesn't attack me, I can stutter-step or make some moves. But if he comes right at me, it makes it harder for me to do things."

See Blanton clips. He waits for the runner and then bites on the hip swivel and gets air.

A proper tackle usually involves a player: (1) putting himself in position to make the play; (2) getting his head across the body of a ball carrier; (3) grabbing hold of the jersey (or "grabbing cloth," as it is called); (4) keeping his feet moving after contact; and (5) taking the opponent to the ground.

Sound like Kyle McCarthy.

Some defenders launch their bodies at ball carriers, which can lead to highlight-reel hits and just as many blown tackles.

Harrison Smith!

"There are so many people now trying to strip the ball out when they make tackles that they don't wrap up the runner. And once you're doing that, it's easy for a guy to break a tackle."

i think alot of it is lack of practice and no emphasis on fundamentals.

often coaches are afraid to get players hurt practicing. so they dont hit during practices, they dont do hitting drills during practice. they dont learn how to tackle or take a hit.

this used to be a pro football thing, but they guys knew how to hit from pop warner, high school and college. then colleges stopped hitting during practice. then high schools.

now even pop warner teams to a certain extent have become pussified.

so you have kids at each level who have never learned how to properly tackle someone.

the shame of it is because they dont know how to properly tackle or take a hit when it happens in a game kids tend to get hurt more often negating any benefit to not doing the drills in practice.

for quite some time coaches on each of these levels have always felt the kids should know how to properly tackle when they get here. in major college often kids are great just based on sheer talent and dont have any idea about fundamentals. at some point this catches up to them and the ones who concentrate on fundamentals succeed, those who continue to try and do it on talent tend to fade.

So, who's to blame for this situation? The first few times, the player. After that, the coach who puts him back on the field.

What's the frequency, Kenneth?

Courage!!

Yawn.

at some point one of their coaches has to stop being enamored by their talent and telling them how great they are and bring them back to reality....

no matter how good you think you are there are others out there just as talented and if you dont have fundamentals drive and hunger you will not end up being a great player. you will just be phased out when you get to their level.
