Mike Shannahan-A New Name

Mike Shannahan-A New Name

Just got finished having dinner with a close friend who's a Notre Dame booster, he has sponsored a few banquets in the DC area. His name is Johnathan Fairbanks(no relation to the Fairbanks prize), just to let you know that I am not being a fraud.

He told me that he expects that Swarbrick is going to speak privately with Mike Shannahan regarding the position soon. Shannahan has been under the weather lately and at home in Colorado. Im not sure whether or not hes been targeted yet for a NFL job or if hes interested in returning to the NFL.

Lump this into the countless rumors but I believe this actually has a chance, no footballcoachscoop.com stuff.

I dont want this guy. Hes too old and I always viewed him as an overrated NFL coach. People give him way too much credit for winning 2 super bowls with Elway and dont realize he did absolutely nothing for the next 10 years in Denver. He never replaced Elway or TD. Did I mention his defenses were bad and that he hasn't coached in college in 20 years?

This is bogus. He hasn't been in the college game since 1983, was never a head coach in college and would seem to have little experience recruiting, therefore he satisfies none of the criteria sought by ND.

For the record, Shanahan has been targeted for at least one NFL position having recently spent seven hours with the Buffalo Bills front office.

Merged.

You already started a thread about out of left field hires; this thread belongs there...

He will be the redskins next coach, 100 percent sure of this.

Going back to the title of this thread, can ND really afford a hire from left field?

This seems like a critical juncture in the legacy and relevancy of Notre Dame football. It can go one of two ways . . . either we can slide into the mediocre pack of college football or get back to the way things used to be. As USC, Alabama, Penn State and others have done.

Agree 100%.

It wouldn't make sense as a hire, it would be nothing more than a big name hire rather than the right hire.

For the record, Shanahan has been targeted for at least one NFL position having recently spent seven hours with the Buffalo Bills front office.

The Bills would just expose Shannahan for being an overrated coach.

One good thing that came out of this weekend is that we all saw that Charlie Strong isn't the second coming that alot of people have made him out to be. He got outschemed by Saban and crew.

My out of left field hire would be John Chavis, the DC at LSU.

John Chavis would kill this program, possibly worse than Phil Fulmer would.

Do even you know anything about him?

If there are alot of negative things out there about him, I'm not seeing them. Please educate me because I don't have any reason to think otherwise.

You don't see anything negative about Chavis because you don't know anything about Chavis.

If you did know, you'd know he was a key factor in the dirty staff at UT during the 90's onward.

Cincy, why don't you tell everyone who should be the coach. You seem to have a problem with every name mentioned. I mean honestly, I think you could find a problem with Tiger Woods and his wonderful marriage.

The person who should be the coach is someone who is interviewed for the job and Swarbrick along with everyone else hes consulting for the hire can agree that the person can do a good job.

I could care less if its George O'Leary once again. If this person has what it takes, and they agree he does, then that person should be hired.

stoops???

stoops???

here is a thought...and i almost hesitate because i am sure it will add to the rumor mill but has anybody given any thought to the stoops brother at arizona? u of a has not been great in his tenure but they did beat usc( we havent in 10 yrs) and his more famous bro's program hasnt been as great since he left imo. as far as recruiting goes he is in a difficult position being a second tier program in the pac 10 so i think he would improve at nd. no agenda here i am just more and more concerned about the edsel possibility!

I've actually thought this from since I watched the Arizona-Oregon game....Mike Stoops is one helluva coach...and Mark is a quality DC, who has been offered different head coaching gigs but turned them down to stay at AZ...I think it would be a great fit personally...I just don't see how it happens...Mike is content with building AZ...Mark is content being the DC at AZ...and I don't see why they would want to come in when it's widely known that ND's fans wanted Bob.

Just cause he's stoops brother doesn't mean he is stoops or as good as stoops. To take a chance on a an unknown because of his name would be very unwise.

I wouldn't consider Mike Stoops an "unknown"...He was the DC on some very good Oklahoma defenses (including the one which won a NC)...He has been building up AZ very nicely...and in many coaching circles, some consider Mike and Mark to be better than Bob...I wish that ND would've looked towards AZ long before they would've looked towards Okla.....

nah...

nah...

not saying to hire him because his last name is stooops...i am saying if we are down to the .500 coach at uconn(a bball school) then maybe he should be considered. i am a big fan of the stoops in general and live not to far from where they are from but that realy has nothing to do with it. imo he would be a much better fit that edsel...

Per ESPN, Kelly is interviewing w/ the Irish tomorrow. I'd be very surprised that he's not the "chosen man" by the end of this week!

well yes in comparison to UConn I'd take a lot of other coaches...hell I'd take Mexicos soccer coach over Edsel! :D sure I'd take a Stoops over Edsel. by a mile.

Mark Stoops is taking the HC position at Youngstown, as far as Mike Stoops he is rumored to be a very hot tempered, volatile coach. I doubt he fits the profile for what they are looking for, but I agree that the Stoops coaching pool is very deep and talented.
