He was on the radio this evening on 105.7 The Fan and he was discussing the Notre Dame program.

He said that we should respect tradition but not live in the past, claimed that the program is living in the past for not upgrading on the level of other schools. Mentioned that we need to build a state-of-the-art stadium, and use money to build the best football facilities in college football. He went on to mention that when bringing kids on their recruiting visit in the middle of December to South Bend in Northwest Indiana, they need to come away amazed by our present, not our past.

He also made a point to say what others have also said on here, in terms of recruiting, Notre Dame sells itself to recruits but we have to realize that the kids of today do not fully understand why Notre Dame is unique. That comment was then tied in with Bobby Bowden's retirement saying how kids nowadays dont care what Bowden did in the 80's or 90's, they would rather play for the new Bobby Bowden aka Urban Meyer.

The host asked him about who should be the next Head Coach at Notre Dame, and he jokingly said his dad.

He said it was unfortunate what happened to Charlie but after losing to Navy, Syracuse, and Pitt he knew it was coming. He also said Charlie will be a good coach somewhere else.

Tom is one of my 5 favorite players at ND past or present.

Yeah their practice facilities at the Gug are state of the art. Don't remember the exact amount but they spent MILLIONS on it. I'm pretty sure it rivals anywhere except maybe Oregon. I hear PHil Knight did a number up there.

Didnt the school recently upgrade all of their facilities?

The Gug is unrivaled and college football teams don't generally build new stadiums; rather they renovate or expand the existing facilities. ND Stadium is an incredible place and kids get that.....whether it's old or not.

There was a special on Fox Sports West and showed the Oregon locker rooms. Their lockers are HUGE and they have coaches and big screens in the middle with X-box. it puts NFL locker rooms to shame. its is really ridiculous.

Not funny. Individual urinals make the lines longer. The troughs may be retro, but they're extremely efficient.

ND stadium is a historic place, kids hear about the history once you tell them about it, but do you honestly believe a 17 year old kid "gets" the history here?

Individual urinals

No troughs? Thank God! :clap:Anyway, LOS seats 63,000 for football, and though not state of the art, Notre Dame Stadium capacity is 80,795. A jumbotron for replays would be ok, but as far as capacity, it is the largest stadium in the state already, by far.

I dont think Tom was saying it has to due with capacity because its already pretty much a pro style stadium.

I think he was going off of his comment about being unique, not just telling kids how we're different but leaving them in amazement by our facilities and stadium. We have the money.

Yeah, I do. They seem to "get" Fenway and Wrigley.

What?

What does Fenway and Wrigley have to do with a 17 year old kid on a recruiting trip at Notre Dame being told about the 4 Horsemen, Knute Rockne, Paul Hornung, and Jimmy Clausen.

I've often thought a new stadium would be nice. I get extremely jealous when I see some of the fantastic facility's some of these schools have.

However I get the aura of the current stadium. I choke up every time I'm there & I think a new stadium would diminish that.

Everybody has their own ideas about what Notre Dame should be but changing any of it takes away from what makes Notre Dame special. Abandoning tradition is not the answer to making ND football relevant again. I never had the great fortune of attending Notre Dame but growing up here in the Michiana area it's just as much a part of me as it is any alumn. I've worked on both the Alumni Hall & the Joyce. Nothing overwhelms me with a greater a sense of pride than stepping foot on that campus because of everything thats taken place there & everything it stands for. Please don't turn your back on that just so you can sway a few recruits from FLA or USC. If you take the tradition factor out of the equation you have nothing more to offer them over those schools. It'll come down to what type of weather they'd prefer playing in.

Nobody is talking about destroying tradition, but you also have to catch up with the times.

Can you agree with that?

We (or at least I) was talking about Notre Dame Stadium. Here's the quote to refresh your memory (which must be incredibly short term).

ND Stadium is an incredible place and kids get that.....whether it's old or not.

You came back and said:

So, as far as I can tell--correct me if I'm wrong--we were both talking about ND Stadium. You asked if I think they get that....well, yeah I do. The same way they "get" Wrigley and Fenway. People know who Jackie Robinson is, who Babe Ruth is, who Dr. J is and ND is in the sports publics' conscious the same way.

In all honesty, do you think Notre Dame pitches the Four Horsemen to their recruits? That's moronic.
