Could Charlie have fired or replaced tenuta during the season? Or is this left up to the university? Two years and he made no difference what so ever.

He could have fired Yenuta at anytime as he made the hire in the first place. The real problem was in the secondary which was Corwin's bailiwick. There was no communication back there.

That's why this is a BAD firing!!!!

The offense is fine...the defense is horrendous. Tetuta and Brown have these big reputations but have been God Awful!!!!

I wonder if Charlie didn't want to fire these guys and that is why he is being canned!!!

This is a bad, bad move...recruiting is back to being top 10 EVERY YEAR...the offense is rolling...tightn up the D and all would be good!!!

as bad as the defense was, the offense could have been more prolific than they were

CW could have made any changes to the defensive coaches or defensive philosiphy at any time, or even dictated defensive calls at certain times of the game--yes, stoops and meyer have ben known to override coordinators if they feel the need.

mostly CW's undoing, but as much as the offense scored, there were games where plays were left on the field and ND really should have piled on more points. for the most part, ND faced alot of porous defenses this year.

Michigan-should have scored much more than 34 against one of the worst UM defenses ever.
Purdue-again, 24 pts was not enough against their defense
Navy-21 pts-enough said
Pitt-22 pts (they have the 25th ranked defense-good , not great)

so, imo, the ND offense could have pulled out 1-3 more victories with less mistakes and red zone execution.

My brother who is a former sports agent and currently works in the front office for a MLB baseball team made an intresting point that had ND dominated and blew out Stanford last night CW could have saved his job, as most embattled coaches do in any sport, by making serious concessions by offering to fire the entire Defensive coaching staff. My brother who lives in the midwest but does not follow the Irish said it was apparent after watching the game that the defesive side of the ball is clearly the problem.

He said in his dealings with head coaches they will always offer up someones head to save their "work in progress". Never understood why CW was slow to hold his coordinators to task. Another reason why he won't be coaching ND next year I'm afraid.

for beating another unranked opponent? that is CW's MO. he cant beat ranked (ie really good) teams. ever.

no way. the decision was made well before this game. i dont care if he won 60-10. his body of work as a head coach is too large at this point.

besides, they get the best of both worlds by firing CW. they get rid of a bad head coach and the whole defensive staff all at once.

Are you kidding me we lost the last three games cause of Weis calls Pitt. not keeping an extra man on the line, Conn. play calling and going for the fg in over time, and Stan. a run play on 3and2 when we were kill them with the pass.

They could have put Buddy Ryan at DC but the simple fact is that defense was a secondary consideration to the offense and the personel just weren't good enough.

Short of a blowout there was nothing saving Charlie this year. Defense has been the problem for 5 years now, and that falls on the head coach.

Right, big point here is that he failed to hold Teuneta and Brown accountable during their control of the defense. I'm disapointed in all three of these guys.

Some of you guys continue to defend Weis and make ridiculous excuses for him. Like, the defense is the problem! It's not his fault! Fire the coordinators and let Chuck stay!

What, are you his brother or something? Chuck is the HC. Both sides of the ball are his responsibility. When the defense goes south, that is his fault, the fault of the defensive players, the fault of the defensive coordinators. But it is Chuck's fault, first and foremost.

If you want to defend the guy, get ready to post on the fan boards of whatever NFL team hires him next. Weis is history, thank God. I am sorry it didn't work out, but it didn't.

I recommend Keith Arnold's analysis today at irish.nbcsports.com:
Weis' demise was his inability to recruit front seven players early. The heralded recruiting class of 2006 had zero impact players, and Notre Dame seemed to stockpile tweener defensive ends in hopes that they'd become Justin Tuck. Morrice Richardson, Kerry Neal and Kallen Wade never developed, and players like John Ryan never became more than marginal reserves.

In answer to your question, yes. Charlie could've fired either or both Tenuta/Brown. I think that he kept them on because of some misguided believe that he could get things done offensively while the defense took care of itself. Obviously, this wasn't one of those times to ignore the lackluster performance of the defense. He should've taken control of things, but didn't. That's why he should be let go.

Well thats because the defense is the problem. Its not that we dont have talent to build upon on that side but poortackling, poor coverage, lack of penetration and pass rush. If Weis could have someone to fix that he would still be the coach and the Irish would be in a BCS game right now. Unfortunatelyfor Weis, it is year 5 and we are still waiting.
