I have to ask this of our group; what do you think the powers that be at Notre Dame really think about the football program?

Is ND Football nothing but history of the schools past to them? Is it something to keep those sports minded alumni motivated/happy about? Do they really care if ND ever returns to being a national power that is in a position to compete for or win national championships? Have they accepted or establish that the last 15-20 years is how its going to be and the staus quo is good enough.

No doubt that the school is the one of the top academic institutions in the world and of course football has nothing to do with that, so that is not an issue.

I think the Administration probably views football the same way that they view any other aspect of the University. They want to succeed wildly, but only if they can do it "the right way." I think this outlook is a big reason why many subway alumni are drawn to ND. Part of ND's mystique is that they have been successful, despite not giving in to the same temptations as other schools (think back to the Big 8 and SEC schools of the 70s).

As long as the money is flowing, I don't think they give two shits about what this team does just as long as it's not embarassing to the University.

Ding ding ding. The ND football program (according to Forbes) is the most profitable in the country in terms of revenue. They lead the University of Texas because of the tv deal with NBC.

Not sure if your being sarcastic, but in case your not?

IMO, it has everything to do with it, at least in terms of recruiting. (compared to elite football programs in the NCAA)

If we didn't have the money from NBC, and the extra revenue it brings in, we would have to be in a conference to simply survive.

My point is, in this day and age, with so much money coming in from sports in college, I'm not sure you can have a world renowned top academic institution, and a top football/sports program?

Revenue from ND Football pays for all sports at ND.

ND is a very good school. It is not one of the top academic institutions in the world.
