When the team came out of the tunnel today, they had their arms locked with Charlie for a show of unison. That was a great scene for any Notre Dame fan, but the tears in the eyes of Charlie said it all. I believe that a decision has either already been made from the administration, or from Charlie himself.
I had high hopes like everyone else when it came to his hiring. He brought the swagger, the rings, and the hope of something new. He was there to make us all smile with that first game against Pitt. He made us believe with the loss to USC, that we were destined for bigger things. His first two seasons made us think that it was our time again. We had two bad hires, and things were finally about to go our way again................
That marriage ended the day we lost our opening game to GT at home in 2007. The reason I say that is because we lost our opening game by 30 at home. Say what you will about depth and everything else. Charlie was severly outcoached by Chan Gailey who isn't even a head coach anymore. We kept our starting QB situation mum that entire offseason until kickoff. When Jones struggled Charlie panicked, and did so rather quickly. I was at that game sitting in the family section of GT players. I live in GA and my wife's best friend is married to a former player. Throughout the game I was getting heckled by some guys that were sitting in the seats a few rows back. It was actually Joe Hamilton who used to play QB at Georgia Tech. We were talking and he admitted that Weis just panicked and brought in Sharpley. I'm not giving this part of the story to name drop, but to let people know that someone else from a different perspective saw the same thing.
He proved to me in that game that the first two years were sizzle. We weren't about to get steak at all! He's a great ambassador for the university, and he loves this place with all of his heart. A head football coach he is not. He has not been able to adjust during a game like you want your head coach to do. He is a great offensive coordinator don't get me wrong. He is just not someone who needs to be in charge of an entire team.
This is my first post on the site. I have read all of the topics like this one, so I understand if people are a little annoyed with my post. I do apologize in advance. I started writing when the game came on, and he walked out of the tunnel. I wanted to believe, I needed the hope, I have now accepted the reality. Charlie is a great guy, and a hell of a father. He is someone that I hope still keeps Notre Dame in his heart.
As I watch this game you can see the coach of UConn wants it that much more. He is interacting with his players, but the most important thing is that he is COACHING them. Tate almost gave the defense an INT and the coach was on his knees next to the player smiling, and slapping his helmet as he got up.
I'm tired of being the headline on ESPN, for all of the wrong reasons. I'm tired of losing to ranked teams. I'm tired of watching Navy play on our field, like it's theirs. I'm tired of the defense looking uninspired. I'm tired of it all guys. I'm ready for the wins, I'm ready for the coaching, I'm ready for our return. WE R ND!
