Notre dame football to me is life. Its rich history makes me proud to be an irish fan. But the last few years have been rough. I just want ND to get back to the top.

every program goes through rough times...... but were on 21 year skid

More like a 14 year skid. We had a pretty good team in 1995. I think we went to the Orange Bowl that year. Burger King will get us back to the top.

ND football to me is what each of of should strive to live like. We have our ups and downs, and at times (like the present) the downs outlast the ups. However, ND will never sacrafice academics, ethics, and morals for wins. WE WILL BE ON TOP AGAIN. Whether in the near or not so near future, ND football, like us in life, will prevail!!! GO IRISH!!!

nd football to me:

nd football to me:

notre dame football is a national past time that never gets old. the build up to the season and eventually saturdays on a regular basis is something i really look forward to.

before the season even starts, i make sure to watch 'rudy', 'knut rockne: all american', and my old time favorites 'the soup bowl' and the championship game vs. texas with earl campbell.

from monday thru friday really get me pumped. my anticipation grows with each day leading up to the game. on game day, i get out my golden dome helmet (authentic) and set it on the footstool/coffee table for all to see.

i wrangle up my dogs (2 of 'em, a puggle and a boston terrier) and help them put on their "fighting irish #1" jerseys. believe it or not, my dogs (jack and fenway) get just as pumped when i pull those jerseys out. each can't wait to put it on and strut proudly around the house.....waiting for game time.

my cat (yogi berra), that's a different matter...he sacrifcices for the team. he may not like it, but he knows he has no choice. according to him, the jersey hinders his ability to walk....but he'll crawl with the best of marines and even give a stare like he wishes you were dead.

my wife and i have our own jerseys we put on. her's being joe montana's #3, mine being the number #7. it's family time well spent in cheering for our boys. it's all that is right with a beautiful saturday of college football. i'll watch other games, but those are more like appetizers for the main course.

i've been to notre dame stadium twice and some day i'll be taking my wfie and newborn there....so they can see the tradition and what the fuss is all about. each time i went the irish lost. yes i was heartbroken, but i wouldn't have traded that moment for anything. i got to see the basilica, the team walking thru the quad, the book store, the main buidling, corgy's, the grotto and finally....notre dame stadium. i entered it like rudy's father. the most beautiful thing that these eyes have seen.

what's not to love about the place?? what's not to love about the school?? what's not to love about notre dame football?? my life doesn't center around it, but my life surely gets a boost from it. it's truly God's football team.

okay, i'm done.

Well in 2007 the Notre Dame football program, to me, was pure misery and wasted Saturday afternoons. In 2008 the program was hope and promise. This year it's unrealized potential and a shitload of pepcid ac.

TO me it also means never giving up no matter how tough the opposition. seeing things through to the end no matter how heavy the workload. working with others as though they were your brothers and sisters.

Notre Dame football to me is tradition. It's smart football played by smart student-athletes that may or may not go pro. But, going pro isn't the only (or main) reason they chose the Irish. They get a first rate education on a beautiful campus. I recently went to ND for the first time and was amazed by hoe beautiful the Fall swept campus is. Each and every building is very clean, and the brickwork and heavy wooden doors make every place (even a dorm) look like a French church. Just amazing.

The football team to me is less about the National Championship each year as it is about beating everyone on the schedule. Half the time, especially in the past, the national champion was crowned by the media so it was opinion fueled anyway. In some cases in this BCS era, it still is. So, I say let the cards fall where they may on that. The court of public opinion will always have differing ideas. But in the season...the heat of the battle against ancient foes such as Michigan is where the real excitement is.

It's why I never want a college football playoff. To hell with that...there's no way a legitimate playoff could ever be constructed with 119 teams. Plus, in college football, every single game matters so much more. I wouldn't want "January Madness" where only the diehards watch the year's games and everyone else tunes in for one month.

Notre Dame football is about finding the best in men. Living traditions and knowing when you are in the moment...not simply looking for the quickest way to the NFL and big dollars. It's looking around, taking a deep breath, and saying "I did it". Trust me, when I was there, I could literally feel the difference between the Division II school I graduated from and Notre Dame. It's just so much bigger than any one person. I've been to OU, MU, KU, Arkansas...none of these places gave off that feeling.

Tradition. ND football is so full of legends of the past. There are legends now, and many more to come. To represent an Irish team, by even being a fan you quickly become involved in a long line of faithful onlookers rooting for a team with some of the deepest roots in all of the sport, and roots that are strong and ready to re-supply the vigor to it's tender young sprouts when the decadent tree has weathered a fierce winter.

Pride. ND football, regardless of the present state, is about pride. We have much to be proud of with our kids that immediately become successful members of society. The academic rates of graduating students are stellar numbers and the athletes amplify the norms with substantial identity on and off the football field. We have much to boast about. This has been so since November 26, 1842.

Honor. Simply stated, we must honor those who have parted ways with us, in the pride, excellence, valor, and courage they displayed to make The University of Notre Dame the beacon it is. To the players, alumni, coaches, and fans who have passed on... This honor is for you! It is our honor to represent ND!!!

When I was a kid, I felt empowered by putting on my superman shirt. I pretended to be a man of steel...

I still get that feeling when I put on my Notre Dame Football shirts. I am proud of my team no matter what. I do believe we are in the eleventh hour. The hour is fast approaching.

The older I've gotten, the more involved I've been with ND football. Everything about ND football- the first game of the season, the big plays, the tradition on the field, the excitement of the campus, the historic players, the recruiting, the blue/gold game, and everything in between. ND football brings excitement and most of all ND has the best fans.

thank you JIM NANTZ

thank you JIM NANTZ

Here's what Notre Dame is to me captured by Jim Nantz on the Tony Barnhardt show this week on CBS Sports. Barnhardt is a SEC hack who constantly puts Notre Dame down and in his interview he gave his usual opinion that Notre Dame is finished as a major importance to the college game, then he ask Nantz's opinion. Nantz says in his direct words that Notre Dame is the marquee name and position in college football and it will rise again. Barnhardt just grunts and moves to the next question. By the way Jim Nantz went to Houston and has no ties to Notre Dame other than common sense. It was a perfect illustration of the hate, jealousy, and FEAR that the college football world has regarding Notre Dame. They know when its rolling at Notre Dame no one stands in its way. Charlie tried to tap into this and it looks like he has failed but he has set the table for the next guy and as Jim Nantz said Notre Dame will be back.

It has to be more than a pleasant childhood memory to the people who run the university or they are going to see the reputation and pull of the school go downhill in a hurry. I do not understand why you cant bring in football players who will toe the line policy wise but be ask to be nothing more than football players trying to get an education. If you polled the student body and ask them their preference I'll bet you hear bring 'em in, let them pull less academics than we have to but they must be Notre Dame citizens and go to class. Whatever that class is. Its obvious to me that the way they are doing it now will not work. If these guys screw up they are gone but give the Tony Rice's a chance to better themselves again. College football is not the only thing in life but a reputation is very important to this university.

Irishtrain,

We cannot sacrifice academic standards that have always been in place in order to achieve a championship class of ND players. That would omit tradition, pride, and honor altogether. At that point, we are only trying to produce a medium, nay, an agar dish for professional football.

Just as X-Mas and many other old traditions become commercialized, embrace the fact we are still consistent at ND with our old values. Tradition will still allow a championship caliber team to come to Notre Dame with nothing less than perfect academic standards. Most college athletes have what it takes to make the grades regardless. They only lack the discipline needed to succeed at ND. Discipline cannot be replaced by less stringent policy. Otherwise, we lose the elite personna associated with a degree from ND.

first, i will say i agree with this. however, i didnt hear anyone complaining about a NC when standards were lowered during the Holtz era.
