An excerpt from a South Bend Tribune interview with Tom Lemming this AM:

Recruiting rumblings

The speculation about Weis' future is only marginally affecting Notre Dame's recruiting at the moment, according to CBS College Sports recruiting analyst Tom Lemming, but it could have seismic implications in the coming weeks.

“Right now it's too early for schools to try and start poaching Notre Dame's recruits,” Lemming said. “But what that speculation about Charlie is doing is it's keeping some of the top recruits, who are considering Notre Dame, on the fence longer.

“Almost every top player in this class or considering being a part of this class is going to Notre Dame because of Charlie. He is the driving force and personality behind the Irish recruiting. That was not the case with Bob Davie or Tyrone Willingham.”

Lemming said if Weis were purged after the season, the 2010 class would fall apart, no matter who the Irish brought in to replace him.

“I also think if that happened, it wouldn't be just recruits leaving. I think (Irish junior quarterback) Jimmy Clausen leaves (for the NFL) and probably (Irish junior wide receiver) Golden Tate too,” Lemming said.

“Most of the time kids aren't as worried about what's going on with the coach as fans are, but at some point other schools are going to pound them. The next few weeks are going to tell everything.”

its true, i have said that if charlie is fired whoever the new coach is will have too much ground to make up and the top recruits will go where they have been talking to the coach for months, a la '05 class

If Weis is fired, the administration better do it after the Stanford game to allow whomever the replacement will be to try and save face with the recruits we do have. A once promising recruiting class could be blown up real quick.

Let's no forget about Manti Teo...I think if Weis is canned, Teo would probably decide to go on his missionary trip...

Whats the point of having great recruits if you dont have a coach who can lead them? Its kinda like having the fastest car in the race but an amatuer driver behind the wheel. Look at Cincinnati with half the talent and a great coach. We get the right coach and we'll be fine, even if we lose some recruits.

If we lose the current top starters on the team and the incoming class, you are looking at at least 2-3 seasons of rebuilding woes under what ever flavor of the day coach is rumored to be replacing CW if he is fired. 2010; BCS or bust, should be the mantra of the AD to the ND Football staff.

What conference do the Bearcats play in???? Enough said. Better get a long ball hitter up front or accept more rebuilding and rebuilding excuses. If they tank in 2010 with the current team and staff, then start taking heads off. But right now, they have the best chance for success with the current players and staff. I wonder if CW has ever been given and ultimatum by the AD and the school. Be intresting to see how he reacts to that.

I agree with the above post, slowly but surely ND is starting to get a better and better team, one more year and CW could save this... get a new coach, and it could be 5 more years of hell

Guys, what does any of this matter. Weis is so bad as a coach he is holding us back even with the great talent we do have.So one really bad class isn't going to hurt us down the road. No matter who we bring in he is going to win 12 games every year even with mediocre talent. Well, at least that's the vibe I'm getting from some...

I'm willing to roll the dice at this point instead of spinning our wheels over and over again. There is no reason to believe Weis could get it done next year if he couldnt in this one. None.

Wasn't that word for word what was said to them this year? Would you add on to that for next year by saying, "No,no...this time I really mean it." Don't get me wrong, I do not think we should fire Coach Weis. However, I can't stand this same debate year after year. It has become the annual "Can Charlie Save His Job" discussion. It comes around just about the time the Holiday decorations go up at the mall every year.

If Coach Weis is replaced, I don't care who we bring in, they are going to have a tough road ahead of them. We are going to be in the same boat. Without the benefit of bringing in JUCO players like you can at other schools, a new coach cannot settle for the quick fix. As we proved after the Willingham and Davie recruiting voids, it takes many years to overcome recruiting deficits like we have experienced. If this recruiting class is blown up and a significant amount of current players leave, we will be devastated and back at the bottom of the pile.

Just let Weis stay for the remainder of his contract. He only has 5 more years left. We can't lose recruits from this class or the high school junior class or even the sophmore class they could be currently scouting. No team has ever fired a coach and had a winning season within 3 years after firing the previous coach. Not Florida, not USC, not Alabama, not Ohio State, Not Oklahoma, no one.

Cut throat coaches like Pete Carrol and company will have a field day with potential ND recruits for years: NO STABILITY in South Bend.

Not saying CW gets a free pass, but unless there were some tangible bench marks set by the AD for this year that CW fails to make, 2010 should be it with a solid set of bench marks: BCS or goodbye!

Great points and it is so damn frustrating. If the AD did give CW that ultimatum, then send him packing. Does anybody know what was said?

Yes, the AD said he was sick of ND not being COMPETITVE on the field, he said nothing about BCS or bust.

Every game ND has played we have been competitive, including USC, which was HUGE... Weis hasn't been blown out once this year, and with a better defense next year the team could be looking very, very strong

To my understanding it wasn't cut and dry BCS or your gone. There was no numerical win total given for Weis to achieve to keep his job. The program has to show growth and be in the discussion for a BCS game. Now at 9-3 with wins over two good opponents on the road and a tough, emotional UConn team at home is that enough proof of growth? I believe so, but my opinion doesn't matter.

I would much rather give Charlie one more year than go through that transition crap again, and in 5 years be saying the same stuff.....If we replace Charlie it will set us back even further than when Charlie replaced Ty, b/c this team is much more talented and moving in a lot better direction than Ty's was, but if we fire Charlie that all blows up....Like I said before, don't know why I keep getting caught up in this b/c the next three games will go a long way to determining what is going to happen anyway.

If he is fired this year, next year, or retires after 15 years there will be a loss of recruits. Unless John Elway was cloned along with Walter Payton and they are looking at ND because of Weis, that doesn't seem to be a great argument to me. He's a great recruiter and will have great recruits every year. So will that be the excuse every year?

If he wins out or even loses only one more game and wins the bowl game, I bet he stays. I think the program is on the upswing, but mostly because of talent on the field.

If we are going to disappoint next year again with Weis (probably a given), might as well start over sooner rather than later.

All we have to do is beat a top25 team or two and charlies job would be safe. we have beat one top 25 team beat in his five years(ranked that way at the end of the season, Penn State his 1st year.).

Pitt and Stanford are both legit teams. Even UConn is much like us, really could be 9-0 right now if they would have finished games and not had so many mental errors. The had Cincy stopped on 4th and 2, only down by 2 points, and a safety had a open tackle in the backfield where he got burnt so bad he didnt touch the guy, who then ran for a TD.

Win out and Charlie is safe. With another loss, Charlie is probably gone. 2 losses, he is definately gone.

All just IMO, but many people said 9-3 was the limit at the beginning of the season.

Couldn't agree more, I'm as disappointed with the Navy loss as anybody else, but at some point we need to either show some faith in the coach and say this is your job, or find someone else. The annual calls for the coaches head affect everything in the program negatively. The university has to realize that they hired a guy who was learning to be a head coach on the fly, he made some bad decisions at the start but has progressed and we are competitive now. I do want more and I think program continuity is a big part of attaining our long term goals. Giving the coach the axe every five years is not a way to build a program, it's a quick way to destroy one though.

I say keep him, that gives us the best chance to keep everything we have right now intact. If he can't get it done next year with a stacked hand, then I say we re-evaluate the position.

OK. I get it dude. You don't like CW. You have made that more than clear in all your posts. And I have made it more than clear that I like big boobies.

I still say give it one more year before you talk about getting rid of him. Next year is his full team. I have said before that I'm not sure he is the guy to take ND to the top, but next year is the year. As atrocious as the Navy game was, I say be patient for one more year.

Then fire his ass if he doesn't produce. lol.

One more year guys. Be patient.
