very good read. what's interesting is the billingsley poll....accounts for last season's finish, how moronic is that?

the computers love us, but it's the human polls where we get killed.

Honestly I think the computer polls are ridiculous. Id rather have 5 or 6 human polls combine than 2 human polls and these dumb computer polls. Some of the things considered by these computers are pure nonsense. last years finish? One computer didnt have Florida in the top 15? Gimme a break. That is scandalous in all honesty that a computer poll doesnt have Florida as one of the 15th best teams. LSU is number 1 by a few computers, they're 100th in the nation in offense. Come on.

ya but its just going by what has happened this year...and umm how can you complain about one poll using last years finish then complain that one doesnt have florida in the top 15? did those tennessee and kentucky wins really impress you? theyll move up as they play better competition

ummm because im complaining that computer polls are bullshit as a whole. Its not a difficult concept.

I'll trust human eyes any day. Im sure a computer would tell you Milton Bradley had a decent year this year also because his on base percentage was respectable but your eyes showed you he was a useless piece of shit.

ya thats a great example for college football...just let the season play out and the computers will readjust....human eyes right now seem to think that Penn State has done better this season than Iowa. You also complained about one poll using last year's records...umm then wheres the difference between that and having teams like Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, and Penn State ranked right now in the coaches poll....they're only ranked cause of preseason rankings and how they did last year. And a computer would also tell me Bradley batted .257 with 12 HR and 40 RBI...not too great for a guy whos making 7 mil and started off the year as a cleanup hitter

Bingo.

Interesting that the computers didn't factor in his anger manangement/attitude problems when they negotiated that salary and placed him at cleanup.

It was human eyes and human judgement that made that decisions. Guess they didn't have a 50 inch screen to see it clearly.

Computers are emotionless. Much like I am. I can step back and say that this ND football team has it all on Offense, but defensively couldn't stop some one on a Pop Warner team.
I trust computers more than I trust the current group of voters, but the problem is you have to come up with a proper model to allow your computers to crunch the numbers properly.

Voters don't care that Tim Tebow has played nobody yet. Yet he is the leading Heisman contender right now, why? Because he has already won it, his team was a Preseason #1. His stats are horrible and against infinitely inferior talent.

So until you can come up some magic model to base your computer rankings on, its going to be flawed. No more so than voters and preseason lists.

NOT A POLL !!

NOT A POLL !!

Honestly I think the computer polls are ridiculous. Id rather have 5 or 6 human polls combine than 2 human polls and these dumb computer polls. Come on.

Polls require voting. Computer "rating" systems have no
voter input. Computer systems are based on game number
stats (formula, math, field advantage, SOS, score, mar-
gins, etc.) and are "ranked" for convenience. They are
used to predict not only the victor but by how much.

Polls can not predict scoring or margins, but their
"ranking" do imply quality. Is a poll rated 28th ND
really only 1/28 as good as a 1st place Florida?

In reality, ND may be a 9 point underdog as suggested
by a computer rating (Sagarin 'ranking' 28th vs 3rd).

If you still not convenienced, please join the IrishEnvy

computer rating systems can be, check the link below...

I think maybe they should let the Vegas book makers vote on the polls. Most of the time their spreads are pretty darn good.

I once bet on a BC vs. no-name game, the spread was 38 by vegas. BC ended up winning the game 38-0, I was astonished!

That's not what they want to do...

When they nail a score with the line, all money is refunded.
It is called a 'push'. They make the most money when they
their predictions are exactly in the middle. That is when
half the teams cover the spread and half do not. If they
think a team might match the spread, they tack on a .5 to
the line. That way they get their cut, it also hints that
their idea of the actual scoring may be close to that line.
