Move it up a yard, it is a bit more difficult to protect the edges. Can't protect the edges against a speed rush = blocked punt.

They aren't protecting the edges.

And MSU made ND look foolish on the onside kick.

Special teams are still suspect. They need to FIX it.

Steve, if they move the protection up just one yard, I promise I will buy you a lollipop.

I'm guessing the coaches see these guys punt 50 times a week in practice. I also think that Maust is getting outpunted. He started because he was a starter from last year. His hang time is weak, and so is his distance. Wehad a great punter in 06-07 who could boom the ball. I haven't seen a legit 50 yard punt from Maust yet. Turk can also bench 400+ pounds so I trust he will be tough enough to make a tackle as well.

Exactly, which is precisely why the notion that the coaches havent figured out whether the new formation is affecting kicks is insane.

For the record, I have not turned against Weis, NDinLA.

I am sitting squarely on the fence but I will admit that I went from being a huge supporter to being on the fence. Havent we all though?

I didnt lie about Crist, man you really like to be inflammatory. The beginning of the Crist possessions were effective, it slowly went down the toilet to the point ND was no longer sustaining drives, Purdue came all the way back, took the lead, and ND needed Clausen to save their ass on 4th down with 15 seconds left.

I simply asked why did Crist not get to throw at all? He basically did not get to throw for all intents and purposes. Im not attacking the kid.

I was asking myself the same thing Saturday night - if you are going to have Crist out there, you are going to have to let him throw the ball a few times to at least make the defense respect the pass, otherwise the running becomes completely inept - which is exactly what happened to us in the 2nd half against Purdue. Crist may not have Clausen's arm nor accuracy yet, but I trust we all haven't forgotten what Jimmy's passes looked like in 07 and 08 - they weren't all nearly as pretty as they have been this year. The kid will learn and develop, which is why game experience for him is so crucial. But if he is going to be effective, he needs to have a chance to throw a few more passes while he is in there.

That's fine. I really don't blame people for being on the fence or even saying he's not the man for the job. What kills me is the people that nitpick for every little thing he does, and even find fault for the things he does well. I'm personally behind him 100%, but I'm skeptical about whether he'll last the way we've had to squeak wins out. He loses, he's gone, plain and simple.

I never thought you attacked the kid personally at all. Far from it. I took it as questioning Weis. But your first post didn't say what you said above. It said that the only drive that was effective under Crist was the first one, which is completely false.

Crist did get to throw, not nearly as much as Clausen, however they were short safe passes. I answered why; it's on the other thread I believe. There's a long list of why he didn't unleash Crist, all of which I completely agree with. But again, that's on the Crist thread that you started. And the time he did get to go down the field, he missed a WIDE OPEN Tate streaking down the sideline. Weis deserves credit for the perfect play call...

Ironically I think Weis' best play calling was the end of the game versus Michigan. The throw to Tate was a great idea. Didnt work out. We have all seen how those games end when you run up the middle 3 times and punt. Even if you burn a few minutes in a college game, the clock is forgiving in college with the first down stoppage.

Thats why I didnt understand the conservatism vs Purdue.

Not insane, and not a problem with the formation. Just a problem with the upbacks too close to the punter. weisbank 4 summed up my thought nicely: upbacks are getting shoved backward while punter is moving up. I almost have to close my eyes every time they punt. C'mon guys, I know I'm not the only one that sees this.

OK. done with my rants.

Time to get back to real life. And rant over there.

Ok I know you always say you spend a lot of time around football and I believe you, and maybe punters punt the ball into their own guys in high school or d-3, but it just doesnt happen above that level. Teams use this formation all the time, and they will continue to do so. The coverage team is out-running Maust's punts and that's Maust fault, not Weis' or the formation's fault.

What I am saying is that ND is dangerously close to having it happen, and I hope the new punter proves me wrong.. And yes, I have been, you might say, intimately involved with special teams. I have also studied so much film you would poop on your chair. That's why it caught my attention so quickly.

The film thing. Not the poop thing.

I've been hoping for this since the 1st of the season. Maust has been very disappointing, IMO.

Sigh.

By the way, I just finished ranting in the real world.

I think it might be better for me to just rant on this site.

At least my bosses BiGIF and NDinLA can edit me.

OK. Only punt I noticed this game, while I wasn't staring at large boobies and perfect body, was that upbacks did not get shoved back. Punter seemed to have more room to punt.

The only punt I halfway noticed. While not staring at boobies.

They were splendid boobies.

What were we talking about?
