They just said on ESPN that USC's RB Stafon Johnson got hurt in a weight room accident in which a barbell landed on his throat. He was taken to the hospital in an ambulance. Scary stuff, hopes and prayers with him.

ESPN just reported that he was coughing up blood... more after the break.

Bleeding from nose, coughing up blood, rushed to hospital by ambulance, very serious. Unknown amount of weight at this time. Possible surgery.

On a serious note, god bless Stafon and his family and I pray for a speedy recovery. God grant he play ball well before the end of this season, and at the least within the next year given the circumstance.

Really? Wow. Obviously good news that it isnt life threatening. Anything with the throat is serious. It would be a shame if his career ended over a freak accident.

His spotters were there, I have an inkling that he was benching without his thumbs wrapped around the bar, I know quite a few people that do that, I feel weird not doing it. I always thought it was dangerous.

Update from Fox 11 in L.A.: Johnson out of surgery. Surgery lasted 7+ hours. His larynx was crushed. This could easily have been a lethal wound, but he was rushed to the hospital and this saved him. He is out for the year, but should be good to play football next season. Doctors were concerned he may never speak again, but now they expect a full recover, thank God...

my friend, who goes to USC and plays on the baseball team, was in the weight room while it happened. he said it was 275 lbs.

275 lbs landing on the throat, man is he lucky to still be alive. 50 lbs ago when I did lift weights I once got stuck and my spotter decided he would talk to the guys at the bench behind us. I dont blame him, I had medium weight on the bar and it was routine but my shoulders were sore and it just gave out. I rolled the damn bar down my chest to my waist, sat up, and dropped it to the ground. lol. What happened to Johnson was something I always thought about back then right when you get on that bench and under it. Thankfully hes ok.

I'm glad we're all hoping things turn out well for this young man. As much as we hate SC on the field we want everyone healthy and wouldn't wish this on anyone.
