In 11 different power rating services [Atomic, Congrove,
Doktor, Howell, Keeper(2), Laz, Marsee, Moore, Pigskin,
Sagarin(2), Trexler(2)], the totaled numbers equal or
exceed those of last years schedule!

Please don't jump on the hearsay or opinion bandwagon
of a weaker schedule!

yes but..

yes but..

Except ND is that much better than last year, so you have to take that into consideration. Technically that makes this years schedule easier...in my opinion.

You can't say that until we see the product on the field. As a loss to Syracuse and a close win against SDSU proved last year, no schedule can be considered easy or even "easier". We have nothing to go off to rate the 2009 team except what is on paper, so you really can't take perceived talent level and on-field production into consideration just yet.

I am as positive as anyone on here most of the time, but I am viewing this season with very cautious optimism. Much more so than any other year. The North Carolina and Syracuse games last year really crushed much of my rose colored glasses optimism. A solid, dominating win on September 5th will help restore much of that good feeling.

I can't freakin' wait for the season to start!

CRANK ME UP!!!!

I definitely agree with you about the schedule, especially when you put up our schedule against OSU's. They are roughly equivalent, and OSU is a "tough scheduler."

I think they may have it a bit tougher but if you take out Navy, UM, and USC who we both play look at what you have left:

OSU: Toledo, New Mexico St, Indiana
ND: Washington, Nevada, Washington St.

OSU: Illinois, Wisconsin
ND: BC, Pittsburgh

OSU: Minnesota, Iowa
ND: UConn, Stanford

OSU: Penn St.
ND: MSU

Now I think they have a bit of an edge in the last two groups (especially MSU/PSU) but call me a Big Ten hater I could see our schedule working out to be tougher than theirs as much as I could see their schedule working out to be tougher than ours.

But somehow OSU gets credit for scheduling tough and all everyone can talk about is how easy ND is going to have it . . . a joke if you ask me

Absolutely! I don't think there is a single game that we can call "easy" at this point. I am not even feeling too good about the Washington State game. Now, don't get me wrong - I think we are going to win them all because I will never pick ND to lose, but I am far from saying our schedule is easy or even easier than last year. We aren't even 2 years removed from the debacle that was '07 and then last year, we had some ups and downs. Even some of our wins were too close for comfort.

We need to go out and crush Nevada. I don't mean just a win. I don't even mean a solid win. I want to see a dominating victory from all three facets of the game. I think ND needs to set the tone early in the season that we are not going to let up on anyone. I want to see a jugernaut of offense leaving a trail of death and destruction in their wake. I want to see a bloodthirsty defense that doesn't just stop people, but DESTROYS people. Once I see what product comes out on the field, then I can start to formulate conclusions about the rest of the season.

heres the thing..... we have no idea how good our schedule is until the end of the season, when we see how many games the teams we go against have won. I dont expect to see that many teams that we play in the top 25. two maybe, 3 would surprise me.

2009's schedule is as tough as the 2008 !!

'09 is tougher!

So say Phil Steele who ranked ND's '08 schedule as the 60th toughest one. He ranks the '09 ND schedule as 37th toughest relative to the other 119 Div 1 schedules.

I agree, I am as cautious as everyone. Last time I had my hopes up was Brady Boy's senior year and the scUM blitzed us-and I never heard the end of it for the whole year being from Michigan. I just think on paper this ND team is going to be better than last. That's all everything is right now...on paper, and it's what I am going off of. I'm just excited as is everyone else...and everyone is right, for ND lately excitement can lead to letdown very quickly. IT HAS TO CHANGE SOMETIME RIGHT, why not this year :)

Do you remember the scene in major league where Willie Mays Hayes leads of the season opener with a hit and all the journalists give Bob Uecker the thumbs up only to be followed by him getting thrown out? That is how I have felt the last few years. Start off the season with the thumbs up only to quickly feel disappointment.

On paper we look great, but until we see it, I am very cautious. You're right, it does have to change, so why not this year? 21 years since our last NC - 15 years since our last legitimate contender. I hope it's this year.

ND's 11-4 in openers over the last 15 years but only 6 of them were "comfortable" openers:
  • '94 Powlus throws 4 TD passes, '98 16 point win over UM
  • '99 35 point route of hapless KU
  • '00 2 TD win over A&M
  • '02 shutout of UMD, and '05 3 TD win over PIT
ND dodged the bullet by 8 points (TD and 2 point conversion) or less in 5 of them over opponents that should have been handled more comfortably.

'94 W NW 42-15
'95 L NW 15-17
'96 W VU 14-7
'97 W GT 17-13
'98 W UM 36-20
'99 W KU 48-13
'00 W A&M 24-10
'01 L NU 10-27
'02 W UMD 22-0
'03 W WSU 29-26
'04 L BYU 17-20
'05 W PIT 42-21
'06 W GT 14-10
'07 L GT 3-33
'08 W SDS 21-13

Great info BGIF! That is exactly why I am nervous about the start of the season. Nevada scares me a helluva lot for some reason. I am just a broken, broken man.

Thank You...

Thank You...

I don't mind enthusiasm, but some source before summer
spouted about ND's weak schedule. The bandwagon got
rolling for the wrong reason. If ND does better in 2009
vs 2008, the reason has more to do with not being gutted
by graduation...Tom

This schedule isn't nearly as tough as the 2008 schedule. Many of our opponents lost key players, the other teams won't be fielding Javon Ringer or LeSean McCoy or Donald Brown or Curtis Painter or any of the rest. That is, playmakers.

Plus, our team is much, much improved.

The power rating services are showing higher numbers for
ND, but very little change in the strength of schedule.

ND lost very few to graduation, the increased experience
of starters on essentialy unchanged offense and defense
units and the cohesive nature of playing together again
far outweights minimal schedule changes...Tom

Easton gave 11 independent sources citing them as the substance for his statement. I added Phil Steele's observations which support his statement as well.

And the best you can offer is a drive-by, "False. For so many reasons."?

Is that Hectiva?

Nope. Not even Activa.

Easton usually posts in Lucida Console (if I spelled that correctly) as it's a monospaced font which works well with tables and all his math related posts. I(I know this becaue I asked him why his tables are neat and orderly and my data runs together like mascara at a chick flick.) However, instead of using Lucida he closed his callout post below with that multicolored GO IRISH. When I clicked on Quote to reply, I was using his font for the GO IRISH which turns out to be Comic Sans MS whatever that is. I like living vicariously.

Monospaced fonts do not allow perfectly even right side
borders. It is a pain at times, but having all numbers
and letters an even equal size means even columns. The
HTML editor requires an equal font and space count from
line to line or we go zig-zag.

Speaking of HTML editors, an extremely easy to use HTML
editor used for the "Go Irish !!" and posted stat tables
is linked below. I paste the tables from Excel or type
the "GO IRISH !!" right into it. I doublt if it ever
took a full minute...Tom
