TE Joseph Fauria has nor reported to ND is not enrolled in summer classes.

This really hurts our TE depth, and it puts a ton of pressure on Ragone, who is coming off a major injury. Fortunately, Tyler Eifert has put a ton of work in during his offseason, and is up to 240 pounds. He wants to contribute right away. Golic might even have to be ready in case of more injuries.

The disappointment is that it takes away a lot of what we wanted to do offensively. 3 TE sets, with a 6'7" burner that could be a matchup nightmare. If Ragone is healthy though, and if Eifert is ready to contribute, this won't be as much of a loss. Plus we have perhaps the top TE in the country in Rudolph, a future All-pro on Sundays IMHO, so that helps.

Rumors are flying about the reason, but nobody really knows. My lady knows someone at ND, and she was told that he had some discipline problems in the dorms, but she didn't hear that it was anything major. That's all I know. Hope he's OK and can get his head straight. ND has allowed many football players to take a year away from ND and return to play ball...

EDIT: I forgot about TE Bobby (Ham) Burger, a walk-on transfer from Dayton I believe, whom Weis raved about all spring long. Kid might jus get his shot...

Hmmm... Maybe a little off topic but when are the Captains announced?

Will there be a void in leadership on the team? Even though the leaders won't be able to engineer behavior but at the same time I'd be interested to see who sets the tone on the team as well...

I think you're taking this out of context. I know nothing about the situation, but what i do know is to take this new information for what it's worth. I am concerned that he is not enrolled, but no one ever said that "ND kicked his ass out of school". Let's chill out a second.

Do players have to be enrolled in summer classes?

No. Summer classes are an option to reduce workload in the Fall semester.

The players officially report in August for NCAA practice sessions. In June and July they can take classes, do weight training and conditioning exercises, and hold unsupervised activities, like Clausen and the receivers playing catch.

I don't know any details regarding Fauria, whether he's had any problem or if he's just staying home and not taking summer classes.

Who was he to report to?

Aren't players do "to report" in August for NCAA sactioned preseason camp?

My experience in the past was that summer classes were optional. Players took them to reduce their workload during football season. Not all players chose to do so.

If any athlete has run afoul of ResLife or the Registrar, I don't think much will be known (except from the athlete himself) until the day players do report and Charlie holds his first press conference and tersely announces "XYZ is not enrolled for the Fall Semester. You're all familiar with the policy of student confidentiality so they'll be no questions taken on that individual. Next item."

Didn't know that about the summer. Thanks for clarifying...

The way I always understood the situation was that all varsity athletes were required to take summer courses. I could be wrong or they may have changed the policy in the last 20 years, but I think that is how it used to be. Especially given the fact that ND doesn't grant a fifth year unless the student has already graduated AND been accepted to graduate courses, there is more emphasis on covering yourself in case you have to apply for the extra year.

Again, I could be wrong, but I am almost certain back in the early 90's, that was the policy.

UPDATE!

From ND, official press release:

NOTRE DAME UPDATE
Due to personal reasons, tight end Joseph Fauria is not enrolled in summer school at the University of Notre Dame and will not be enrolled for the fall semester.

"Joseph won't be with us this fall but I hope to have him return for the spring semester," Irish head coach Charlie Weis said.

!@#$#$%%^&^&**(())

Just googled Fauria.

Tight end Joseph Fauria won't play for Notre Dame in 2009 | Around the Bend

Tight end Joseph Fauria won't play for Notre Dame in 2009

<TABLE width=515><TBODY><TR><TD>
Continuing trends of depth problems at the position and players missing semesters for "personal reasons,"tight end Joseph Fauria is not enrolled in summer school and Notre Dame and also will not be enrolled for the fall semester.

The school announced Fauria's impending absence in a brief press release Wednesday and said only that the 6-foot-7-inch, 245-pound sophomore wouldn't be around for "personal reasons."

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>...

Moreover, it's the fourth straight semester that an Irish player will not enroll for the proverbial "personal reasons." Nose tackle Pat Kuntz missed spring '08, cornerback Darrin Walls missed the '08 season and cornerback Gary Gray missed the Hawaii Bowl and all of '09 spring practice

SHIT!

weis said he hopes he is back in the spring of 2010, but who knows. This definately sucks though, thought he was going to be a great one. Found an article in the SBT about the story, also talks about Chris Martins decision on taking visits and sharpleys baseball debut. Link below.

Fauria told ISD that he will be back for the spring. As I was told by another ND fan, this is not all bad (even though it does suck). Fauria was supposed to redshirt this year, but Ragone got hurt, Yeatman suspended, and he was forced into spot action, thus wasting a year of eligibility. So now he will come back next year as a soph, Rudolph will be jr and probably gone the year after, and Fauria will have 2 years of being 'the man', along with Welch. Trying to find a silver lining here on an otherwise shitty day...

The silver lining will be Ragone having healthy wheels and Burger transitioning from Dayton DE to ND #3 TE. Burger is the same weight as Fauria 245 although shorter. He's also older having played a year at Dayton and sitting out last year. He's been on the scout team and ND's weight program for a year.

The SBT article notes lists Eifert at 220. Somebody didn't do their homework. A recent article on Eifert has him up to 235 the only problem is he has a bulging disk. Without the disk problem Eifert could have been 240 - 245 but seasons start and he's a bona fide pass catcher. With the disk problem, I don't see either of the freshman stepping in like Rudolph and Fauria did last year.

P.S. If Romine doesn't crack the starting OLine, he'll get time in 2TE sets. With Aldridge to FB, Paskorz could be used as a Move TE but at 235 he lacks the beef 2TE.

I hope its the same personal reasons as Gray and Walls. I love having all these Cali kids on our roster, especially when it appears that Dayne and Co. have become really tight. Hope he comes back, kid had a special skill set for someone that big.

According to Eifert's dad, he's up to 240 lbs. Nice. The kid's a worker...

There was a hint of this coming

There was a hint of this coming

A couple of days ago there was report about players working together on campus and about Jimmy Clausen having Floyd, Tate, and Rudolph out to his house for a week. The though struck me they may be the three top receivers but where's Fauria, he's local. He doesn't have to fly cross country to go to Jimmy's house. And in 2TE sets they can all be on the field.

I thought about it then blew it off as reading too deeply into the tea leaves.

They already knew.

His dad texted Steve Wiltfong and told him that Ty's been working really hard and was up to 240 pounds. How he did that with a bulging disk, I have no clue, but hopefully the dad is right...

yeah my point wasn't the 5 pounds but the bulgind disk and the impact. If he can't lift with his back how does he do contact drills? How does he block anyone? How does he get up off the ground after a tackle when going over the middle? (without a stretcher)

I know the impact on a 40 year old what does it do to a 18 year old football player?

When I first saw this weight gain I figured we had insurance for Ragone's knees.

I'd like to hear Wabash or an orthopod weigh in with some experience based comments. Is this a few weeks off for an 18 year old or a mandated redshirt for rehab? Until I hear to the contrary I'm penciling in Burger and Romine in at TE on my depth chart.

Nobody is "required" to take them, but all scholarship varsity athletes do. Just like no one is "required" to participate in off season workouts, but everyone does. Most football players don't necessarily have a lighter course load in the fall, but it does give them flexibility in terms of dropping a class in either semester if they are struggling and not having to worry about falling behind in terms of graduation, or they are able to take a more challenging requirement in the summer when they have more time to focus on it. Also, in a lot of cases, guys want to graduate by December of their senior year or only have 1 or 2 classes to take that last spring so they can focus on preparing for the NFL which is another incentive for doing so.
