This is an unbelievable story on the U of Miami and how they used to recruit under former head coach Larry Coker:

In recruiting game, University of Miami finds film doesn't lie -- OrlandoSentinel.com

Must read. The fact that they used to eschew their own recruiting analysis (if they even made one) and just listened to the Rivals and Scouts guys is just unbelievable to me. It's why they have sucked for the past 6 years, and it's why when CW offers 3* guys like Lo Wood, I'm OK with it b/c ND coaches work their tails off in recruiting and they know what they are doing...

I agree this is an unbelieveable story.

Coker inherited a full cupboard from Butch Davis but that only carries you 2 maybe 3 years. If Coker's staff was doing this, how he couldn't have achieved a 60-15 record?

His .800 winning percentage rivals the All-Time Great Coaches. Not just at Miami, anywhere.

Dennis Erikson won only 3 games more than Coker in 6 years. Coker's predecessor, Butch Davis won 9 game LESS in a 6 year span (with the same players).

Didn't Coker have two straight QB failures in Brock Berlin and then Kyle Wright that led to his demise?

There's the heart of his problem.

And Brock Berlin wasn't found by a unnamed recruiting coach using a laptop to check Rivals Rankings.

Berlin was hand picked by the Ole Ball Coach, Mr. Quarterback himself, Steve Spurrier. Now Spurrier may have been influenced by more than the recruiting services as Berlin was Gatorade Player of the Year AND USA Today's #1 Offensive Player. Spurrier and Berlin had problems (not the only QB Visorboy had problems with) BIG problems and Berlin transferred to Miami.

When he finally gets to play at Miami after sitting out the NCAA transfer year, his performance were reminiscent of his Gator adventures and Miami struggles. The fans scream! Wright eventually replaces him and turns out to be not much different.

Meanwhile the Hurricane Faithless scream at Donna Shalala who just loved giving trouble poster boy Willie Williams a second, third, ... nth chance. Donna make Wililer her poster boy for social change. Willie could play football when he was in the mood. Willie showed Donna he hadn't changed. Willie gets to leave da U.

Coker's relationship with Shalala wanned and the The Helmut Flinging Thug Fest Bowl with FIU was the fatal blow. Shalala tried spinning that one as well but "Institutional Lack of Control" was being thrust in her direction. Not the NCAA violation kind; the thug school mentality kind.

Coker had thrown 4 assistants under the bus ala Tommy Tuberville the year before so it was his turn to go.

This article is unbelieveable. I'm curious if this is a plant to buy Randy Shannon some more time. Funny that Randy was one of Coker's coaches. How many recruits did Shannon find at "RecruitsRus"?

And how about Randy's Recruiting Coordinator Clint Hurtt, also a Coker coach who notes in the story:

After following the advice of recruiting gurus helped lead to the program's recent decline, the Hurricanes have returned to trusting themselves when it comes to finding talent. Third-year coach Randy Shannon continues to emphasize strongly the idea of recruiting based on staff judgment instead of some Web site's rankings.

"That's accurate," UM recruiting coordinator Clint Hurtt said. "We spent way too much time recruiting off [Internet] lists and finding these top guys instead of truly evaluating. You can't just go off hearsay or just because Florida, Florida State or Alabama is recruiting him. That doesn't mean a thing."

"WE" ?

What were your credentials for becoming recruiting coordinator, Clint? A paid subscription to "Insiders"?

Why do I have the feeling that Clint was the one whose computer screen was all marked up in yellow from Clint highlighting the 5 Star prospects?

Then there's the incredible revelation that you shouldn't trust "highlight tapes". You have to watch game tapes to see what the kid does for the other 59 minutes of the game so you can see what does (or doesn't do) when the ball is on the other side of the field. Nice scoop by the reporter! Keen insight.

I think the reporter may have a paid membership at IrishEnvy.

You can read that same comment multiple times on this internet board.

Did I say I find the story unbelievable.

There was a rumor about this a couple years back. Find it amazing that Coker would deviate from the system Davis put in place when he had so much talent at Miami. Look at the 2000-01 Rosters and almost every two deep is in the NFL. I agree with NDinLA our staff does a great job of evaluateing that doesnt always match up with Rivals or Scout. Brian Smith was a 3 star on Scout, Hayseed was the 25th best athlete, and Blanton was the 22nd safety.

Brian Smith is a poor example. He was not some unknown commodity, he was an ND legacy. ND evaluated him and passed. He didn't reject ND. ND rejected him.

Despite repeated efforts by Brian and his father, ND still passed. Brian eventually verballed elsewhere. It was only after ND got stiffed at last call, that they reached out. Left without a date, ND rebounded to Smith.

Yeah but guys like that play with chips on their shoulders. That is why Brian Smith is my favorite player right now
