(Skip this if you're in a hurry)

The girls soccer team at the Catholic elementary school where I teach didn't have a soccer coach, and since h.s. basketball had just ended, I agreed to coach them. I had 19 girls try-out, with only 2 who had ever played on a soccer team, but since I wasn't about to cut anyone who wanted to try and play sports, needless to say I had my work cut out for me. But I did have one SUPERSTAR, so she helped a lot.

Anyway, the CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) tournament was this past weekend. The first 2 days are round-robin format. My stud had a club tournament, so we only had her for 2 1/2 games. We lost the 1st, somehow tied the 2nd, and lost the 3rd w/out my stud 8-0. For the last game we played the top team, who hadn't given up a goal, but I did have my stud for that game (playing her 7th game of the weekend-she was exhausted, so I just put her at sweeper).

Sooooo, the 3 coaches of the other team all had USC hats on. They absolutely looked like the typical elitist USC pricks that I hate. My school's colors are green, so I was in full ND gear. The coaches seemed cool enough, and they had seen us play, and I joked that I hoped that they didn't beat us the way USC had beaten ND last year. He smiled and said that they just wanted to have fun, and they weren't there to embarrass anyone (his team was REALLY good, and my girls were a bunch of mostly small Hispanic girls who just played as hard as they could).

Long story short, we played our best game, and they couldn't get past my stud. They scored a goal early, but we held our own and kept it at 1-0 the entire game. Well, these 3 guys bitched at the ref THE ENTIRE GAME! Gave us no credit , the way they bitched and moaned. But they were still winning. Finally, w/ one minute left, the ref calls a foul on them (bad call, I admit) right outside the penalty area. Everyone in the stands knows what's coming; my stud, exhausted, walks up slowly to take the kick. For all you soccer fans, think Beckham vs. Greece. Anyways, she stepped up and put the ball in the top right corner. ref blew the whistle and we tied 1-1. Jubilation on our side, screaming on their side.

Keep in my mind, the other team already advanced to the semi-final round. The game meant nothing. AND IT'S A FRIGGIN 8TH GRADE GIRLS SOCCER GAME! But these USC pricks ran to the refs complaining, then RAN to the tournament director screaming for a protest and demanding the refs be fired. It was un-freakin-believable. I'm like, what happened to 'we're just going to have fun?' Yeah, fun, until a team you were supposed to smoke actually played with you.

So, that's my story of why USC sucks (again). Sorry it was so long; just had to tell it to my fellow Domers...Go Irish!

Love soccer and my son's season starts this week. I hate the fact that some of these coaches treat these games as life or death for the "younger" players. I mean, it's 8th grade people.

When I got out of the military, I was able to watch some of my son's games down in Florida and let me tell you, I WAS PISSED. The way these coaches coached 8 year old kids. Give me a fucking break!!! I mean they were screaming at the refs and kids.. HELLO!!!!! The only thing on these kids minds were ice cream and pizza,,,,

I coached some soccer, baseball, and football...Not once did I yell at the ref or the kids. I believe the kids need to know the fundametals and respect of the game first before you or they can start bitching at anyone....

Anyways.... Not all SC fans are bad.......I think PSU fans are by far the worst...

Holy shit....ND is on a 7-0 run...gotta go.....

Thanks for sharing, my 4 year old is getting ready to start her 3rd season of soccer this spring.

??? How old was your child when they started? I can see a future Irish Soccer Player. I played Soccer from 5 years old all the way through High School. I wasn't great at it but it sure was fun.

One of the best things in the world to watch is youth soccer. I'm talking toddlers. It's like a swarm of bees moving around a ball. It's awesome.

When she just turned 4 she played the spring and fall, and we just signed her up for spring soccer. She'll be 5 in May. In my day i was quite a soccer player myself, last soccer game i played in was a state championship game. Gave up soccer to play Football, because at the time they were both in the fall (HS). It would be my dream if she was to be able to attend Notre Dame.

NFL Dradt Update

NFL Dradt Update

Most probably heard yesterday that BC D-lineman Raji tested positive for drugs at the NFL Combine. Well, today you can add U$C linebackers Cushing and Matthews to the list. Of course, everyone knows that the third member of their linebacking trio has been associated with steroid use earlier in his Trojan career.
Just another example of why Pete Carroll is the Sargeant Schultz of college football when it comes to his program: "I know nothing!!!"
