I feel that way about improv jazz, such as the John Coltrane stuff. Elvin Jones, his drummer, by all accounts is master drummer and all drummers, virtually all, have nothing but superlatives to say about his drumming. I just cant see it at this point. I find it to be totally lacking any direction at all, I understand the improv aspect of it, but his playing still completely eludes me. In years past, I would have said, "he sucks" and moved on. but I know its good, I just cant see it.

Brubeck on the other hand, exactly as you said intelligent playing. Alot of odd time signatures. As I said before, Joe Morello is nothing less then inspiring to me as far as playing drums
