This is not a good thing...unless, as the article mentioned, Charlie can somehow convince Robert Hughes to play fullback. I know that Charlie promised Hughes that he would be a featured back, but I think that we all saw this past year that he will never be able to handle the full load. Don't get me wrong, he's a great inside runner and he has excellent hands, but he has no business running outside and you have to be able to do that if you want the rock full time. I am praying that he changes his mind and sees that he could be an excellent hybrid fullback that could really excel in this offense as an inside runner, goal line back and occasional pass catcher in the flat. He would just need to block a whole lot more than he is used to.

I hate to say it, but other than being built like a mountain Schwapp wasn't much of an option on the field. It scared the crap out of me every time he was in the game because I thought they were going to call his number and his "fumblitist" would kick in again. He couldn't catch the ball either. So, IF he didn't happen to put a good block on someone (which was hit and miss for him) he was virtually useless out on the field. Sorry to be truthful about the matter, but sometimes the truth hurts!

I'm sure Schwapp is a great guy. I don't know if anything happened between him and the coaches or what. I can only comment on what I saw on the field. He just didn't pan out. He missed alot of blocks, his hands were suspect, and he wasn't reliable in short yardage situations. For someone of his size, it amazed me at how often he would get stonewalled at the line of scrimmage on short yardage situations. I think Hughes would be a good hybrid back much like RPN was. Speaking of RPN, I fully believe ND loses one game at the max if he were allowed to play the whole season. That guy was a beast on the field. Anyway, I think Hughes would fit that bill and that that role better suits his skill set. I wish Schwapp the best in his quest for a fresh start.

Not that it would of made a difference but this news would of been nice before Gaffney announced. I think Weis already talked to him about Hughs or Aldridge moving too FB so he split! He has NO chance of being a pro FB...he is a beast size wise but cannot block to safe his life! Good luck to Schwapp though!

I was actually happy when he said he was gone. I love all ND players and wish him nothing but the best, but the bottom line is that he sucked. He was a bodybuilder pretending to be a fullback. We couldn't give him the ball on fullback dives because he would just fumble, we couldn't throw it to him because he'd drop it, and in the miraculous case that he did catch it, he'd fumble it if he got hit, and worst of all, HE COULDN'T BLOCK. And he's a fullback!!!!

Let's be honest, the fullback is a dying breed. It's not a position where you NEED to have a guy there, like tight-end or something. Don't get me wrong, I'd LOVE to have a great fullback. It would be awesome. But I'd rather have no fullback than a bad one, you know? There are plenty of sets where we can run the ball without a dominate fullback. We also have 2 guys in Hughes and Aldridge that MIGHT switch to fullback if it meant more wins and more PT. And if they don't , then we'll have to be more creative in short yardage, instead of what we did this year on EVERY short yardage play: Aldridge in the backfield, behind Schwapp. No Tate, no Floyd, Kamara in motion, and then a slow-developing run behind our horrible line, our overweight receiver (who is a good blocker, I admit), our freshman tight-end who might weigh a buck-90, and a fullback who is so big he can't move his neck 2 centimeters to save his life so he misses yet another block. Result? Negative 2 yards.

So yeah, good luck in the pros Schwapp, and if it doesn't work out, you have a great education to fall back on...

we will be able to use Ragone as a blocking back on plays where it only requires one TE (Rudolph)

I talked to a kid who lived on his hall last year. He said that Ace was one of the nicest human beings you'll ever meet, that being said, since he was a featured back in HS, his transfer to FB didn't pan out. I have a feeling that Hughes being moved to FB will result in the same thing. Missed blocks, or missed assignments.

cw's offense is outdated. By the 7th game. (His first year...)

Can any poster here work as hard to grow as big as the pic of Asaph?

I REALLY don't like CWs offense. Outdated. Makes fools out of athletes.

Bedtime.

I haven't been happy with the fullback position since Marc Edwards. I miss the crew cut and the boulder-shoulder battering ram he put on people. Plus he could carry the ball and he broke one or two long ones of his own every now and again.

No love for RPN??

I gave him some love. I thought he was really good and did alot for the team until they kicked him off. I felt like we would have lost 1 game with him in the lineup. His ability to run, catch, and block as a FB really helped the team.

No love for RPN??

RPN was a good contributor, but I really believe a fullback needs to be a throwback, old school player. Edwards looked like we traveled back in time to 1950 to recruit him. Just all day tough and the crew cut - I can't get over the crew cut! Guys like him I always thought were fun to watch. I loved goal line or short yardage situations because you just knew Edwards would move the pile for the TB or, if he got the ball himself, it was an automatic we would pick it up. Dude was a 'dozer!

is luke schmidt not coming back now?

luke schmidt's status is unknown at this time. He sat out all of last season from suffering from chronic headaches. It is very possible that the condition will end his football career. Quite a terrible way to be forced out of a sport. Steve Paskorz will most likely be the fullback next season.

Charlies's offense needs a rock hard, no nonsense all Pro line, and a great quarterback like he had at NE. Fullback is not the problem. (It probably doesn't hurt to know the other team's defensive signals either).
We need a COLLEGE offense, not a pro offense whose function is to act as a farm team to the Pros.
I love ND. (Are there any of Lou's playbooks left lying around?)
I hope Schwaap makes it in the pros; and if not, has a good future. He is really a nice young man.
