I don't "hate" USC how I hate (1980's) Miami. Miami was true vitriol, true hatred. The dirty players, the dirty coach, dirty dirty fans. Fighting and spitting on each other. It was that dirty kind of hate that you see on Jerry Springer. You know, when she finds out that he's been sleeping with her sister and that Steve can't get to her fast enough and she's able to clock him in the temple with her right stiletto heel. But I digress,,,

No, USC hate isn't like that. It's just a tad "dirty hate" due to the Bush Push and parents house leasing deal and a few thuggish bad apples on their team. No, the USC hate I have is that of the jealous kind. The absolute talent depth that makes me drool. The constant top 10 recruiting classes since the Poodle took over. The recent National Championship(s) that they've enjoyed. The fact that they don't necessarily offer only shitty classes. The BCS wins. The Freakin' beautiful weather all the time! I hate USC for being so good for so long now. It must be how they felt in the 80's. It's unfortunate that I cannot hate them just for the game that they beat us in every now and then. No, I have to hate the fact that they are better than us. Here and now, they are better and I hate that. When we were, at least, on par with each other, at least we had "Tradition", "Academics", "HIGHER STANDARDS"! But everything else being equal I didn't have to hate them and I could respect them and still know Jesus likes us more than them AND we'll still probably beat them next game anyway.

Young fans listen up! We didn't used to be good. WE WERE GREAT!!! And we were great most of the time, most every game. Almost every player would do something every game to make you say, "OH snap! No he diunt!" or as we older guys would say, "Oh shit! Did I just see him do that!?" We weren't "2008 USC good", we were better! We didn't lose out on recruits because we had too much depth like USC is experiencing now, they still came! It was like Texas with Texas recruits except NATION WIDE BABY! That's how we were. I see USC how they are now and how their fans are now. All cocky and full of swagger. Yep, that was us. Except some of our fans may have been worse. Although being born a Notre Dame fan, it was a God given right and that's why fans of other teams hated us so much! 99% of that hate was not that "dirty hate" I described in the first paragraph, it was the kind of hate I now feel for USC. Frustrated jealousy! THAT is what I truly hate is that that is how I feel. I hate that I have to feel frustrated jealousy and I hate that about myself.

I don't want to hate USC anymore. I want them to stay just as good as they are right now and I want to be able to respect them again. Then I know that we are back because I will know we will probably beat them next game and when you are winning, it's hard to hate a good team that you know you are better than!

Right now, I hate USC and I don't like that about myself!

But I still say GO IRISH!!

Speedster, great story, I loved every moment of it. I must say that I agree about the envy part of the reason I hate them, but I disagree with being mad at myself for it. I think you you should not care about those SOB's, they don't care about us. They take any opportunity to beat us by more then the spread and you can bet your behind that when we get better, and believe me we will, we will not hold anything back. I for one will not feel bad, I will just smile and remember that pay backs are a bitch.

I too hated Miami that much in the old days! For the same reasons mentioned above .... dirty players, dirty coach, dirty dirty fans and so on. It doesn't mean as much now that they're basically a "non-factor" in CFB and the Irish haven't played them for quite some time. Given that, there was, is or will never be a team that I despise more than scUM! Always have and always will be that way .... Muck Fichigan over and over again, those scum sucking bastards!!!!

Hmmmm. Not sure if would personally love to be hated today because I "used to be dominant." I'd kinda rather be hated today because I am now, but...

At least it would inspire envy in others.

This post reminds me of the beautiful shirt my wife got for me on the night after the USC game '05 - she was out at Samari's and saw this guy wearing an emerald green shirt on which was embroidered "I HATE TROJANS" and she got him to agree to sell it to her - right off his back. Brought it home to me, and I wear it to this day. Ahhh... you gotta love hatin them trojans!

My earliest memories were of the 74 game where Anthony Davis killed the Irish with his 5 TD performance so my hatred of SC runs pretty deep. Continued all the way until I was in high school and Todd Marinovich went to a neighboring school so my hatred grew. One of the games in South Bend (not sure of the year) during Marinovich's tenure where SC started singing the ND fight song in the tunnel before the game and a huge fight broke out added more fuel to the fire. The Bush Push capped three decades of hatred of the Trojans. Also, living in Orange County doesn't help as I am surrounded by obnoxious Trojan fans every day.

I understand hatred of other schools depending on where you live and what you were exposed to. The only two times in my entire life I have ever heard my wonderful mother swear have been watching ND/SC games and they were both the "F" bomb! Nice!!! It all depends on what you have been raised with. I don't hate any team more than SC. Never have, never will.

GO IRISH!!! KILL THE TROJANS!!!

You and me both brother. You can't understand it unless you live here, or if you went to ND. My lady is an alum, and she HATES the Trojans even more than I do (!!!), just because of their attitudes when they go to South Bend. And even worse, their band, which she claims is the most obnoxious of all visiting bands that go through SB (she wasn't there when the Stanford band was last there). I mean, I thought I hated them, but her hatred runs DEEP.

Anyways, I will say that I respect the hell out of what Pete does down there. Not the shadiness, but the way he talks about a word they always use at SCum: Compete. He talks about it all the time, and those gys compete like hell during practice. He even has a radio commercial where he talks about competeing. (quick tangent: why do you think he was so pissed off after Sanchez left? He stayed up all night with Sanchez, and he thought he got him to stay, only to have Sanchez call him the next morning saying that he leaving to the pros. Pete LOST, and that's not something he takes lightly. And he acted like a spoiled brat afterwards.)

And I've been to a few practices. It's like a circus in a way, with all the family and the media, but those both get after it. I hate the Condoms with a passion, and I hate the fact that they got away with the Bush scandal, and I hate the way many of those thugs are allowed to run around the campus and do whatever as if nothing can happen to them, and I hate the stories I hear about many of them never going to class (Mike Williams anybody). But I respect the hell out of the way they compete...

Repeated replays of that game remind me that that is the only time I ever hated ND. For giving in and giving up and for not rising to the challenge. For thinking they had it made. Kinda like this year's team every second half.

Ya know....Swagger! "We got it made!"

I flip the friggen channel as soon as I can whenever those friggen replays comes up.

Oopsie. Mellow out time.

But I will take any USC team against any Jimmy Johnson Miami team any day. Hell I'll jump out on the field and trip a Miami dude as he sprints past my benchwarmer ass.

I can't agree more and it pains me to even read about it hear but misery loves company. I also remember Joe Theisman putting up almost 600 yards of passing in the pouring rain in the coliseum and ND still losing but JT was the man. 10 years ago you barely saw anyone in LA wearing USC garb. Now you can't get away from those fair weathered fans and all their ugly ass burgandy and piss shirts, hats and flags. One day that shit will go away and my ND flag will still be flying high in 3 win seasons and undefeated seasons.

GO Irish and Eat Shit USC if you can read.

The only thing about the years against Miami is when we matched up with them, whether we won or lost, I never felt DEFEATED. Even in their best years, we always seemed to bring it against the 'Canes. There were some slugfests and we always seemed to at least take as good as we got. With SC, it has been brutal in recent years. Serious beat downs and ass kickings at our expense. The last few games have been especially rough because we look like we are out of the game from the opening kick. I have truly felt defeated.

I agree with you BeatSC - 10 years ago you didn't see the shirts, flags, license plate frames, and the G-DAMN VANITY PLATES! Oh Lord, the vanity plates!!! SCGRAD, SCFAN, FIGHTON, SC4EVER - when I am sitting behind someone in traffic and I see they have an SC vanity plate, I want to just pull them out of their car and beat the crap out of them!

I remember the "Decade of Dominance" against SC and I hope we return to those days very soon. Please Coach Weis, when we are ahead in the game and you have the Trojans on the ground, please, PLEASE go for the kill. If you have your foot on their neck, keep pushing until you hear the "SNAP!" and you see blood!

So much for all that money I spent on anger management courses!

And recalling old posts, you are a big boy, tatted up and everything! You should do pretend to do it just to see the look on one of those front-runner's faces.

And the USC gear that people wear out here is just unreal. Back in the Paul Hackett days (oh, those were the days), you couldn't give away USC gear. Now you can't turn the corner without seeing it, esp where I work. I even have a friend of mine who was all ND in h.s. and now is all SC. The last 2 years, I'm proud to say, and so is GoIrish, that we wore our gear more than ever, in the face of all the shit-talking. True fans, not like the Condom fans out here...

Amen brother! One of life's little pleasures to me is when my wife and I wear our ND gear and we see someone else here in OC with some Irish duds on. You give that knowing head nod and a little smile and the ubiquitous "Go Irish!" like you are behind enemy lines and you just came across some allies and you are both standing proud and representing your ND love.

I agree, however, I think that we have a great chance of being hated for being dominate again. It is true that we are going through the roughest time in maybe the history of the program right now. Over the last 15 yrs or so we have made serious mistakes and for that we are paying now.

That being said I believe that Charlie has the boys headed in the right direction and he knows that next year he is being asked to put up at least 10 win or his job will be someone else's for the 2010 campaign. He is pushing the chips to the center and he will do everything in his power to insure his legacy and the future of this program are tarnished no further........................

You described it perfectly. Not only in OC or LA but pretty much all of Ca now.

What really sickens me is that most of these SC fans just jumped on the bandwagon. They haven't earned anything. They aren't true fans. They are just enjoying the good times. A real fan is there through the bad times as well as the good.

Wabash, were drunk when you wrote this? Too many lesson plans due? LOL.

I didn't know McKnight chose SC over us. From everything I remember, he was all LSU before Pete snaked him. Reminds of when Reggie Bush chose USC over ND at the last second. My USC 'source' (LOL, just a guy who lives for ND that knows a ton of USC alum well-connected) told me at the time, and I'll never forget it, that Reggie was all set for ND but his step-dad was scum, and SC gave him a little somethin'-somethin' to get him to there. I thought my friend was just spouting off, but sure enough, 4 years later the Yahoo report came out with the house and the agents and all that. Wouldn't surprise me at all if the step-dad took something from alumni to convince Reggie to go there. And one thing is for sure that my friend was right about, the stap-dad is slimy, no doubt about that at all...
