Does anyone watch TMZ? Last night they had a piece about the USC Football Team at the annual Pre-Rose Bowl Prime Rib feast at Lawry's and the camera guys were asking the players questions. The asked a bunch of the players (Matthews, Malaluga, Sanchez, et al) what they thought of Joe Biden. Only Sanchez knew he was the VP-elect. One guy (not sure who) even said "I don't know, I'm a meathead!"

They also asked some of the guys what they thought of euthanasia and they couldn't answer. And they asked about Blagojevich and no one knew who he was either. Sure hope all those guys are successful in the NFL! Absolutely hilarious! Sad, but hilarious...

I would love to see them ask ND players the same questions and see the disparity in the answers they get.

This is not a surprise, obviously. I used to love Mike Williams when he was at USC, just because he was so damn good and physical. Then one of the my teacher assistants from USC told me about Mike Williams the student. Dude never went to class, was dumber than a doorknob, and was lazy as f***. (What do you expect from a Florida native ) That changed my attitude towards him bigtime, and now look at him. There are some smart USC football players for sure (mostly o-linemen!), but this TMZ thing is more the norm, sadly.

In their defense, I will say that when I was in college, after hanging with my buddies and clowing around (and maybe drinking??), I would have been perplexed by a question about euthanasia for sure. Even Blagojevich might have gotten me (MIGHT). I was in college for Pete's sake. I did my fair share of partying. But not knowing Biden pretty much says all you need to know. Like I always tell my USC friends/students: You'll be lucky if Ray Malauga even knows how to spell U-S-C by the time he graduates...

I give them the benefit of the doubt as well about Blagojevich and euthanasia, but not knowing Biden - especially when the election was arguably the most publicized and, possibly, historic event we have seen in American Politics in a long, long time. Only Dirty Sanchez knew who Biden was. When I was in college, I partied my ass off most of the time, but I could at least answer 5th grade level civics questions.

I pray these guys have long NFL careers because, otherwise, they will just be a burden to society. But, then again, what do I know??? I'm a meathead!

I will say one thing. I saw a special on some Texas Tech players and I was very impressed. They sounded and looked like very good kids. Some other programs do have great kids.

What I think is sad is that we don't expect more from our student athletes in college athletics. I am not expecting all athletes to be Myron Rolle or all be on the Dean's List, but knowing the name of the VP-elect is something that you should know, even if you learn it accidentally. If you have turned on a TV in the last 18 months, you ought to be able to mention the names of the main Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates.

It is sad we don't expect more of our student-athletes as a society. Saying they are only there to play football sets the bar too low, in my opinion. I know it won't change, but it is still a sad commentary about our views of education in this country.

Fact, "Snoop Dog" is a known gang member who has been on the USC sidelines during the games. The point is USC has a dirty program, with no accountability.

I happen to know for a fact that one USC player comes from a good background and attended a prominent "private" high school in Nashville. He is a good kid from what I have heard. He just happens to be a man among boys. Not all USC players are thugs. I am not sure how many are but I know several come from families with money. Do you think Matthews had to overcome the streets? I seriously doubt it. I am not a USC fan and I think the Irish as a general rule likely have the some of the brightest football players in the country, but to generalize another team is not fair. Not all of them are bad. And even some of the ones that could have been, may turn it around. I still think USC cheats (recruiting and eligibility) like a mutha though.
