Are they each eligible for a 5th year?

I am a big believer in addition by subtraction, and thus losing Crum, Kuenz, Lambert and Brown will definitely help next year.

Losing Grimes and Bruton will hurt, but we should have good replacements in each of those spots.

Not sure about Turk, but I know that McCarthy has a 5th year of eligibility and I am pretty certain that he'll be back. I also hope that Mike Anello returns. He was a huge sparkplug for us this year. As far as the others, I will not miss Justin Brown or Terrail Lambert, but I will certainly miss Bruton, Grimes, Crum and Kuntz. Those guys were terrific players and will be tough to replace...even though we have amazing talent behind them ready to step in.

Just checked and discovered that Turk does not appear to have a 5th year left. The Seniors that have a 5th year of eligibility are:

Evan Sharpley
Kyle McCarthy
Scott Smith
Kevin Washington
Asaph Schwapp
Joe Vittoria

This is based on the Rivals roster. This particular roster showed that Mike Anello didn't have eligibility left, but I thought that I read somewhere that he did have another year left.

I like Schwapp and McCarthy to stay...would love it if Anello had another year...could see Smith for depth. I'd tell the others its time to start their post football lives.

Schwapp can block if he isn't confused. He is happy with his role, and he has a future playing Sundays if he can continue to improve his blocking. Would love to see him used more as a safety valve...have no idea what the kid can do with the ball.

Mccarthy is a solid ball player...good fundamentals, decent discipline, smart. I think you need that for all the pups coming up on D.

Anello made the special teams #1 in the country in return yards. Of course you want someone like that. If just 1/3 of the team sold out like that kid the only loss we would have had on the regular schedule was USC.

More than anything I wish we could find some solid OL 2s from big 10 or SEC schools that could transfer to ND. Tough prospect when you give up eligibility and considering the academic standards. Add in the fact that lineman usually don't develop until they are in year 3...doesn't leave much. Still not even sure if policy even allows transfers...but man could we use a couple on the Oline...Dline as well.

I thought Schwapp had another year. Anyway, I'd like to see McCarthy, and Anello back. Schwapp, no thanks. Crum, bruton, Kuntz, and Grimes will be missed. I will not really miss Lambert or Brown that much. Lambert has been disappointing. Brown played hard, but I look forward to some of the young DL guys getting a chance.

Losing Crum and Bruton will be hard on the team. Kuntz is probably backed up by someone who should equal his output...but let's face it, if there were someone better behind these guys, they would not be playing with the first team.

Paul Duncan will probably be back.

Does anyone know if Steve Quinn has another year of eligibility?

I think McCarthy will be back. One reason he will come back is for the opportunity to play w his younger brother who was a freshman at ND this year

As for the transfer answer, why can't Notre Dame ever get a good JUCO? Look at Kansas last year. A good part of their team happened to be filled out by JUCO players. Hell, Alabama's line was anchored by Caldwell's (is that the center?) transfer from BFE to the All-America team.

Notre Dame does not accept Junior College transfers. It has been Notre Dame's policy from the beginning. It is one of the many things that separates ND from the rest of the college football world.

I knew that... my brain is just on the freaking fritz tonight. I has been a LONG day to say the least. This popped up after I read something on rivals.

During the syracuse game. Pat Hayden said the following players had applied for 5th years.:

McCarthey
Ray Herring
Paul Duncan
Scott Smith
Mike Anello

Just what was said. That it for whatever it's worth.

of those choices, i'd probable lean towards mccarthy, anello and duncan for depth on the OLine.

Don't agree. Weis was always in love with Kuenz and Crum.

He held back many of the freshmen in the DL and LB.

That last quote kinda made me laugh sportallyr. Kind of confusing, but i get what you mean. The best player out of those guys was by far Bruton, but even he will be replaced with the depth that we have now. Mac will be back, and Slaughter, another MacCarthy, and i cant get my head on straight right now but i know there are others ready to replace him. The biggest concern would be replacing Kuntz, because it leaves us with less and less depth along the d-line, though i think many of the players behind may very well have better careers than he had.
