Advice for the weary

Hey all,
Just wanted to drop by and give my two cents about your coaching situation. I am a lifelong Nebraska Cornhuskers fan but I recently got the privilege to go see a Notre Dame football game for the first time when you guys played Syracuse. Loved the atmosphere (almost as good as Lincoln's haha). But I must say that for the entire game, I couldn't get over how similar the game was to one of Nebraska's games last year before we fired Bill Callahan. The way the players played, the fans grumbled, and the whole general mood surrounding the game was exactly the same. It's sad that I've gotten to see two once proud programs meet somewhat of a demise in the last year or two. My advice to your administration would be that you cannot show Weis the door quickly enough. The Syracuse game showed a lack of a good gameplan, but more importantly a lack of heart from the Irish. I saw the same thing last year and now things are looking up in Lincoln under Bo Pelini. Just my thoughts on the situation. Good luck on the return. A winning Notre Dame is good for college football.

PS- Might want to take a look at what Turner Gill has done at Buffalo. I know you guys want a proven coach at a big level but it's been amazing.

Good, thoughtful post.

It's nice to see that every fan of another team who comes by here is not just a pot-stirring troll, and instead has something interesting to contribute.

I'm posting this here so that everyone can pick at me or agree. I respect Charlie as you all know. I do think we must change as you all know. This program is to be pitied and Big changes should now be considered. First one is too really consider who and where we play. The Mac Conference is a fit, I'm tired of being the butt of ESPN jokes and overall venom of those who are jealous of this once proud program. We could keep the academics and compete where we belong ( maybe the Ivy League ). Also no more gleefull squeels from NBC color guys when a 3-9 team beats us in our own house. Notre Dame can no longer be Notre Dame in todays college football world, all you have to do is watch the interveiws of other teams players after games. Those guys from USC are not students they are semi pro football players. If you think the lineman at these tier one programs are student athletes then you are foolish. Thats not to say that when they have a guy who excells in the classroom they will promote that to make a show of someone getting educated but for the most part they are they to play on Sunday. THIS NEXT PART IS IMPORTANT FOR ALL TO KNOW. I am friends with someone at an SEC school ( who is on staff of the football team ) that is good year in and year out and he told me that 50% of their players cant get in to Notre Dame. I would just circle the wagons, tell NBC to take a hike, join a conference were we can compete and be proud of what Notre Dame tries to do. Are't we all a little tired of being ESPN's whipping boy. Go Irish and and hats off to what Weis tried to do. You cant build something without the right parts.

we get a few... in fact a few semi regs are MSU fans or Buckeye fans that contribute in positive ways... thats why myself and other mods just dont ban someone from other fan bases the second they drop one neg comment in if 9/10 are just trolls

Even when they were HUGE and T.O. was allowing stuff he shouldn't have as head coach NU fans where typically very respectful and down to earth, they remind me a lot of ND fans without the intense expectations of their team, which all things considered makes them a cut above us as a whole,... generally speaking

ACAMP, I can remember when the Vols went to South Bend one year. I think they refer to it as the Miracle at South Bend now. (all Vol fans have a copy of the dvd, ridiculous!) Anyway, when some them returned from Notre Dame they commented on how the fans were very classy before the game and even in defeat were very classy afterwards. I was proud to hear that. Lately though, I have witnessed and heard of some incidents that makes me a little guarded on feeling that we have the best fans still. I guess times change and frustration sets in.

The other great place I have been to watch a college is Ole Miss. What a nice place that is. Classy fans, no need to worry if you did not bring anything to eat. Just walk through the Grove and you will get all you can eat. Plus they have a great band and tradition. Great time. Knoxville is a spectacle too. One hundred and five thousand screaming rednecks is a sight to behold. A very very loud place when they have something to cheer about. I swear I was at a Georgia game one year and the place was so loud that during the stuffing of a Georgia running play by Tennesse the cheering crowd caused what I call a sonic boom. One loud freakin place.

Went to an Alabama game too. In Tuscaloosa. They were ok but a little snooty. Great experience also.

This is NOT, NOT, intended to be an insult to Nebraska or their fans (a fine fanbase I might add). But NU has never and will never mean as much to college football as ND. They don't have Joe Montana, Ara Parsegian, Knute Rockne, Lou Holtz, Paul Hornung, Rocket Ismail, Tim Brown, etc.

They do have Tom Osborne, a great coach, but other than him they haven't been relevant or won nearly as many NC's as ND. That's why nobody makes a big deal about it. They also have not played a BCS game since the BCS became the Gold Standard for success. We have played three. Whether we deserved to play in those games or not is a matter of conjecture but the fact is that we have and Nebraska hasn't. It's the same deal with Colorado (great in the late 80's and early 90's), Washington (ditto the 80's 90's). The schools with staying power are Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Miami, Texas, Florida and USC. Nobody even talks that much about FSU, if you notice. People don't talk about UCLA's mediocrity either.

I would lump Miami in the same category as FSU. They have not been around the top but for maybe 25 years or so.

People still talk about Miami because they did it with panache. They also played in a lot more big games, both bowl and regular season, than Nebraska did.

Miami is subjective so it's hard to say who's right. I'm just saying that the media still talks about Miami like they're expecting them to be good again and like they're still relevant in the big picture.

I concur but I still hate Miami. I dont hate Nebraska. So as far as I am concerned Miami sucks and Nebraska is more relevant. :bbanana:

Does anything say Irish fan more than a "F" Miami blast?

Catholics vs. Convicts.

Michael Irvin. I don't even need to mention any more names. That name alone speaks volumes about what Miami was.

I agree overall and an EGG BOWL is on the top of my non ND must see games in my lifetime... but UT fans sure seem to hate us now...

Wow. I really just started this to give my two cents and offer some sympathy. I didn't expect to be compared to Colorado and Washington and told that we have less staying power than, well, Miami for one. We are fourth all time in victories and won five national titles over the span of 37 years. We were good in the seventies, eighties, nineties, and the early 21st century. We have played in two BCS games since they started that. One was the National Title game as a matter of fact. We went 60-3 over 5 years in the 90's. I really have a hard time being compared to Washington and Colorado.

Did Nebraska play the game of the century with Oklahoma? You will not hear me bash Nebraska. They had one of the baddest (BADASS) teams of my lifetime. I dont think I have ever said a bad thing about Nebraska football in my life. I am not a big fan but I do respect them and recall some bad ass teams they had.

Washington and Colorado had some damn fine teams. Don James was an outstanding coach at UW. My commentary was based on who was sexier doing what they did. Hey, what Nebraska did worked and it worked well. But most kids grow up wanting to be the quarterback and not many of them envisioned being a quarterback that ran the option. Nebraska was boring but very, very good. The problem is that boring teams fade away. It's the same reason that everybody remembers the Joe Namath led Jets and '85 Bears....they did it well and they were flamboyant, too.

Personally, I despised those teams but they have staying power.

P.S. Your only BCS appearance was 2000. Washington and Colorado have both been in one BCS game as well.

Actually we appeared in the 2000 Fiesta Bowl and the 2002 National Championship at the Rose Bowl. The BCS began in 1999.

And I'm not saying that Washington and Colorado weren't great because they were. I'm not trying to discount you guys' tradition. It's the best in college football. But lumping our teams of the past forty years in with Colorado and Washington is something I take offense to whether you meant it or not. Like I said, you guys have great tradition. I'm just asking you to recognize that the team not so far behind you in all time wins has a great tradition too. Saying we have no staying power is ridiculous.

Do you? I watch college Game Day on ESPN every weekend and the only Nebraska highlights I've seen this year were after your games against Missouri, Texas Tech and Oklahoma. The common thread being that those three were are all Top 25 teams.

If you READ my posts, you would understand that I'm not touting some haughty view of Notre Dame. I, for the life of me, can't understand why the news outlets keep making a big deal about a team that has lost 15 games in two years and really, sans 2005, hasn't been a contender for years. Obviously Notre Dame has the largest contingency of fans in the country but that doesn't mean that we should be talked about as much as we are. Another two years of this and I guarantee we lose all relevance.

As I said, Nebraska has an excellent and quite large fanbase as well. The reality of the situation, however, is that they don't receive the press coverage. They are much nearer, not in tradition but relevance, to Colorado and Washington at this point.

Alright. Thanks for clarifying. I took staying power to mean that we were like Colorado and Washington in that we were good for 5-10 years, but nothing special. I got ya now.

PS- We took our media lumps last year. The reason you don't see us is because this year we've beaten who we were supposed to beat and lost to who we were supposed to lose to. No surprises to report sans Texas Tech which was an amazing feat to even be in that game.

The good news for you guys is that Nebraska has the tradition, commitment and infrastructure to get itself back to national prominence. Much like Notre Dame, I think you'll get there again.

I look forward to it. Cornhusker-Fighting Irish title game in the next decade? That would have a lot of history and appeal.

Right now I'll just hope we can win the Gator Bowl. Best of luck wherever you guys end up and with the Weis situation. Again, I say get him out of there.
