My radical plan to restore ND football to greatness.

Today it is about money, money, money. Partially in jest- I wish teams like Navy, ND, Duke, etc. could start their own conference. Colleges that require "real" attendance belong in an honored conference. ).

Arguably, Notre Dame is ahead of the pack in selling out for a buck. Every NCAA licensed bit of merchandise has to have a separate licensing deal with "Saintly" Notre Dame because of its independent status. BCS dollars for ND have to shared with NO ONE, while Big 12 Teams split the money .... among 11 others.

Originally ND received $14 MILLION dollars for a BCS appearance. Finishing in the top would guarantee a BCS spot... a deal not offered to any other school. Now ND receives $4.5 million for a BCS appearance and $1 million for not appearing. Last year Notre Dame played embarrassing football and received $1,000,000 from the BCS.

NBC's exclusive contract with ND provides $10,000,000.

ND Football contributes $21 million into the academic portion of the school, more than any other and more than the sum of the next 5 schools combined.

You're complaining about this?

Not complaining. Just pointing out that he said other programs except for ND, Duke, etc are after the $$..... ND is after the $$ big time
Funny thing. I have probably been around the country more than the average citizen, and one thing I have noticed at random sports outlet stores is that they sell local college or pro paraphernalia, and ND. When I don't see ND stuff, I ask why not, and clerk 99% of the time says they sold out.

Unfortunately you're wrong....a year or so ago during one of ESPN's Thursday night games they put up a graphic of the schools that make the most money from merchandising...I think they listed the top 5 or 6. Guess who wasn't on there? Yep. Unbelievably, ND. Go figure.

Wasn't a rank brotha, was based on sales....were listed in dollar amounts. I was pretty stunned not to see ND there.

We need a bowl win or a NC so we can sell some jerseys and shit. I still cant believe it. I see Irish gear all over the country, but hey ESPN is the lead pecker when it comes to peckerheads.

Did some diggin....think this is the list I remember seeing during a game on ESPN.

2005
1) Texas $47,556,281
2) Tennessee $46,704,719
3) Ohio State $46,242,355
4) Florida $42,710,967
5) Georgia $42,104,214
6) Alabama $39,848,836
7) Notre Dame $38,596,090
8) Michigan $38,547,937
9) LSU $38,381,625
10) Auburn $37,173,943

But have no fear, we've moved up since then!

2006
1) Texas
2) Michigan
3) Notre Dame
4) Georgia
5) North Carolina

Forbes ranked ND #1 in 2007 but I don't think they took into account how much money is put towards academics vs how much stays in the athletic programs.

Don't get me started on these stats. Trust me. Local sales may indicate local stuff. And you are using ESPN as your source.

National sales? All ND. Prove me wrong. Maybe cashiers don't order enough ND stuff to stay ahead of the game. Trust me. It's all about ND.

UM..... ND is fine! ND nation needs to stick together. If everyone is such an expert then go coach a college football team and tell us what you think.

I understand we are all upset that we lost to BC etc.. but we have a young team!

I may be in the minority but I think the team is on the right path. The QB has improved and he will improve, our WR's are young, last time I checked the OL isn't going anywhere(young, mostly JR's), we have some amazing TE, and we have very talented RB's.

The Defense is also on the right path. Remember our DL has 5 freshman, 2 sophmore, and 1 senior. In my book that is young.

My solution is leave the team alone and leave Weis alone. Lets wait until next year before we all freak out!

I think he has done a great job with the young team!

One of the best damn comments on the situation. CW knows what needs to be done and that is place in ND history is on the line along with his job. Stay failthful Irish, stay faithful.

ESPN was reporting hard numbers as gathered by the Collegiate Licensing Company. So put yer "ESPN hates ND" stuff aside....it wasn't an opinion or arbitrary ranking by ESPN.

National sales? All ND. Prove me wrong. Maybe cashiers don't order enough ND stuff to stay ahead of the game. Trust me. It's all about ND.
Where do you get your numbers? Anything more than "trust me"? I don't need to prove you wrong, the company noted above compiles the numbers as reported by the colleges.

Here ya go....

Step 4: Join a conference. Don't give me the money argument. ND makes plenty of money as do all other schools who are in conferences. There is a reason we are the only major Independent left - all the other schools came to their senses, e.g. Penn State. Money is less important to me than putting a team on the field that is battle tested. Remember the bowls in 05 & 06? We were slaughtered because we hadn't been tested for a run of 5 or 6 games like all the other teams who played in conferences.

If we join a conference we will lose that which makes us stand out.

ND Football would be forever dead...
