Tyler already has an offer from UCLA and he comes from a well respected acedemic school that is know for producing top notch RBs. ND has already been out to visit.

After recent discussions with Tyler about how the Irish would like him to come and play full-back, the Irish have stepped up and offered him a scholarship.

Tyler also has offers from UCLA and USC. This will be another tough pull out of Pac-10 territory, but Brian Polian who is handling the west coast recruitment of Wood, Pollard, Evans, Gaffney and others has been working tirelessly to do just that.

if they are offering a scholly as a fullback they must really think he can put on some weight. and keep his speed decent. if they believe in it so do i. so go get him boys!

No doubt he will need to put on some weight. But I think CW is moving away from the big bulky blocking FB to someone who can run (and hold onto the ball at the same time) or catch passes out of the backfield.

Gotta wonder whether Luke Schmidt is still having issues with concussions? I wonder if that will be an available scholly or a higher position of need and whether there is something that the public doesn't know about.

he may be looking at a more versatile fullback. like a chris cooley who is a h-back. plays fullback and te. excelent hands and a powerful lead blocker.

It's possible, but I believe Luke was working out as a TE during the spring. whether he stays there or whether he is still having concussion problems we probably won't know until the fall.

I have not liked our FB situation sense Powers-Neal...he is they type of FB we need right now. Good blocker, decent speed, and tons of heart!!!

Not sure what if anything changed, but here's the official word.

"It's really between USC, Notre Dame and Stanford," Gaffney said. "I really clicked with all the coaches at these schools and it's just a gut feeling I had about them."

All of Gaffney's favorites have offered him and the other schools not making Gaffney's cut that have offered are UCLA, Nebraska, San Diego State, Utah, Auburn and a few others.

"I really want a total college atmosphere," he said. "I'll be checking out the sports atmosphere, the fans, their depth, the campus - it's all going to be important."

Although these dates aren't set in stone yet, Gaffney plans on taking an official visit to USC on Oct. 4 when they play Oregon and to Notre Dame on Nov. 22 when they play Syracuse

Perhaps this is one factor that helped the Irish back in this race (assuming they were out and he wasn't misquoted earlier):
But as a USC fan growing up, Gaffney admits he always rooted against the Irish in their rivalry with the Trojans. "I rooted for USC all the way," he said. "But I think that was probably because I wanted to go against my dad. He's a big Notre Dame guy."

Wouldn't be surprised if he ended up at Stanford. Fits in well into their system--another Toby Gerhart.

Evidently we arent doing very well recruiting this guy.... a new FB offer went out within the last couple of days to some Texas FB. hopefully we can start getting good FBs to ND who can block and catch the ball out of the backfield.

I'm not sure how much to read into the new offer (no profile for him yet, sorry). but ND is basically no where with that guy. he has a list of officials and ND isn't one of them.

The other guy (Toben Opurum) thinks he's a tailback, we actually offered him in the summer. Our only hope w/ him is if he decides to play fullback, which he won't.

Gaffney set to visit Notre Dame
Wednesday, November 19, 2008 | Print Entry
Posted by Greg Biggins

There aren't many players in the state having a better season than Cathedral Catholic (San Diego, Calif.) running back Tyler Gaffney.
The Dons are 10-0 and ranked as the No. 1 team in San Diego County and No. 11 in the CalHiSports.com state top 25 rankings. Due to blowouts, Gaffney has only carried the ball more than 20 times in a game four times this season. He has still rushed for 2,003 yards and 37 touchdowns, including seven scores last week, while averaging over 10 yards per carry.

The talented running back will take his first recruiting visit this coming weekend and couldn't be more excited about it.

"I'm going to Notre Dame and I'm pretty hyped up about it," Gaffney said. "It's my first time there and I can't wait to see the program up close and see what the school is all about.

"Obviously, Notre Dame has great tradition and I've heard great things about the place. Obviously we have to take care of business first on the field Friday but then I'm excited to get to South Bend and see what the school is all about."

Gaffney has narrowed his list down to three schools. In addition to the Irish, Gaffney will also check out USC (Dec. 12) and Stanford (Jan. 9).

Thanks! Some thoughts:

1. This kid is very good from what the locals say in SoCal.

2. Student section and fans: Let's not forget about him in the craziness of the T'eo chase!

3. Harbaugh is one hell of a recruiter. He seems to be in the mix of A LOT of good athletes that ND and USC are recruiting.
