Better way to rank teams...

If you want your rankings to be sensitive to both winning
and strength of schedule, this is one method:

Multiply your team's current win % by the av of your play-
ed opponent's win %. In turn, multiply this product by
their opponent's record (ie: .75 x .60av x .80av = .36).

Is this realistic? Sure, you need a computer to keep track,
but for your team to be worthy, your oppoent's opponent must
also be credible.

Think there is too much emphasis on the other teams? Weigh
each level by the win % historical relationship (correla-
tion). Using .7 as an example: (1xteam) x (.7xopponent)
x (.49x opponent's opponent).

Simple and better than a "flip of the coin" poll.:wizard:

Here is one of the most reliable formulas I've seen when it comes to predicting how teams "rank" in the NFL. Not sure how well it would translate to CFB with the lack of parity in the "league," but it's been damn near spot-on for NFL.

Props to WPB Dawg Fan on The Browns Board for this one:

Power Rankings formula:
Quality Points (QP): Victories of teams you beat - losses of teams you lost to.
Road Win (RW): 6pts
Home Win (HW): 5pts
Point Diff (PD): 2% total point differential
Total Games (TG): played by team
Power Score = (QP+RW+HW+PD)/TG

I also think that pre-season official rankings shouldn't come out until a week or so before the BCS rankings. Since really, how often has preseason rankings been right?

It is pure guesswork anyway until at least all the teams

excellent point. playing a team with a winning record may not mean much if that record was amassed against terrible opponents. i'll take your word for it on the calculations.

I agree with Easton. One of the biggest problems that CFB has are those preaseason polls. Cut them out and you will have less squabble at the end.

But then, they would no longer be "preseason" rankings. Kinda "midseason" if you ask me. Shit. Look at the time. Gotta go...
