This game put total closure on the TY issue forever. I wanted to beat him bad, but I must admit I feel sooooo sorry for those players at UW. They are in for misery the rest of this year. Further, Ty may have killed the UW program for a looong time.

D was good. Clausen was average. They were giving Floyd a 10+ yard cushion, yet they still sent him him on the old fly route. How about a comeback or slant? Aldridge looks like he definitely deserves more reps. I'm a little disappointed in the sacks allowed and allowing the UW TD at the end. After seeing how bad Washington really is, it should have been over 50-0 at the end. We did have 247 yards on the ground and a near shut out, bring on Mark Gay's Arm Pitt panthers. Oh yeah, Harrison Smith rules.

yes, he's the one who let the receiver get behind him on the TD

i was glad to see a number of 2nd stringers to get some reps.

Yeah, we probably should have had more points, but when you run the ball what, 19-20 straight times, you're not going to be putting up a ton of points. It's great to see the younger guys and 2nd stringers get some pt, but to me, it was even better seeing CW take it easy on the kids from UW. They have had it bad enough already, it's only going to get worse for them, they have Southern Cal next week, so they may just go winless this year.

Jonas Gray was the bright spot, I thought. That kid looks fast. And I mean football fast, not just a great 40 time in shorts and a t-shirt!

Why burn Fauria's redshirt?

I swear I'm going to make this a sticky, as often as I see people mention it. ND DOES NOT REDSHIRT! If you have a year of eligibility left, after 4 years at ND, you must have graduated on time, and be enrolled in a post graduate course at ND. Then, and only then, will the University petition the NCAA for an extra year.

We were a doormat last year, and haven't won a bowl game in 14 years. The last thing I'm worried about is Washington's confidence.

That guy is a beast. Reminds me of Ricky Waters. Guy is hungry. Jimmy was off tonight.

But, so what - ND won.

Yippee Kai Ay Mudda Fukka.

(I had to watch the game from a local non-boobage-waitressed bar. I think the "barmaid" had a bigger shlong than me, and was 3 times my age. They were discussing diabetes medication and the price of an ambulance ride.) It was me and two addicts of some sort in the entire bar.

That's it. I'm gettin cable.

P.S. I think Davies did a really nice job.

Thinking the same thing. But I guess they know what they are doing.

So much pressure on that new kicker. Did anyone notice how he could hardly keep his eyes open while tossing passes on the sideline after he missed the PAT? Looked like he was reciting the rosary. Did anyone else "feel bad for him" or have I become that much of a softie? Walker's kicks did not hook.

i thought giving him a chance was fine. you gotta know how a guy will do in game situations before you put him in when it matters.

I agreed with the choice to give him a chance, but watching him barely able to keep his eyes open while the nation's cameras were focused on him after the miss seemed a bit extreme.

Whatever. You gotta pay if your gonna play.

reps to jonas gray. i liked what i saw and hope he can work his way into the lineup. my favorite guy robert hughes is looking really slow right now. it'll be interesting to see if gray can get more time although he needs to work on his catching of kickoffs. he muffed the pop up at the half at UNC and azzfkd the one in the endzone after the uw score. overall though i like what i see with jonas. aldridge ran hard and hungry last night as well. he needs some more time too.

in case you missed it, Walker made both his field goals and all his PT attempts.

Okay so he's what 4 for 12 this year and 8 for 21 in his career??? We still need a kicker. Weis put him in cuz we had a comfortable lead. What would have happended if Washington was up by 2 points with 3 seconds left in the game??? I could tell ya! WIDE RIGHT/LEFT!

Is this the second or third year for Walker? I did notice that one placement and hold on one field goal was a little shaky. Hard to accurately kick a moving object. I do not have alot of confidence in him but all it takes is a hot streak to get back in the groove.

I liked what I saw for the most part. We are stacked in the skill positions. But, Washington is one of the worst teams I have seen in a long time. No emotion, no talent, not much of anything. Maybe Coach did take it easy them. I was curious to see if he would run it up on them. I am glad he did not.

I though Young looked very good. He was dominant.

he can't go back and fix his stats from prior games. he was perfect this game, made every kick they asked of him. you can't do better than 100%. if he finishes the season making 90-100% of his remaining kicks are you going to continue to complain?

also, as far as recruiting kickers, Weis did that; they come in next year.

yea lets go easy on Brandon. I think we all can agree that we wish we had a guy who could boom it every time right down the middle. But Brandon is our kicker, he made a long field goal against UNC, and made two last night. And is 2nd field goal was a BEAUTIFUL kick. Right down the middle from 42 yds out. Bottom line he is our kicker, lets support him. All we asked out of this football team is improvement not only from last year, but improvement from week to week. Shouldnt we ask the same out of our kicker? I think so, and I think Brandon is improving.

How come they don't criticize Clausen as much because he is a ONLY A SOPHOMORE but Walker doesn't get the same leeway?

Not to justify the bashing of Walker, but because QBs have a lot more to learn. The kicking motion is essentially the same, from High School to College. Whereas, the reads that the QB has to make, the throws he has to be able to make, and the decisions that he has to make, are drastically different. It takes time to pick all of that up, so underclassmen QBs are generally given something of a pass, until they have time to learn how to do these things.

kmoose,

If they stick you in grad school and let you play another year, how is that not a Redshirt?

It's a fifth year no matter what degree program you call it. Well it's not a Redshirt if they don't give the guy a scholarship for graduate studies. But if they do, they it sure walks like a duck and quacks like a duck. Are those grad school guys still on scholarship?

I'm not knocking it. I'm just calling a spade a spade.

P.S. I know the value of the BA/BS itself. I'm just talking administratively, not level of academic effort or achievement.

SteveM, I think his point was ND does not use the term "redshirt" Their players can apply for a fifth year if they are eligible, but technically it is not a redshirt. I understand what you are saying though...

It's a bit semantical, Steve, but here is the difference:

At most schools, you go through your freshman year without participating in whatever the cutoff is: the school petitions the NCAA (at the end of the season), and you are granted a fifth year of eligibility. You know, at the end of your freshman season, that you are guaranteed 4 years of eligibility. Even if you never graduate, you will be able to play that fifth year.

At ND, you go through your four years. If you did not participate in whatever the cutoff is, during one of those years, you can ask the school to petition for you. But here is the biggest difference between ND and most schools: in your sophomore year(academically), you could not slack off of classes, because if you want that 5th year, you know that you have to have graduated in your 4th year. Now, just graduating is not enough. You also have to qualify, and be accepted to, a graduate program at ND. ND's graduate programs are pretty competitive, so earning a degree in Philosophy (no offense, Philosopy majors) with a 2.0 average is not likely to get you in.

It's a small distinction, and one that many haters will scoff at, but it is a big difference, when you look at the emphasis that it places on the student's education. Education comes first at ND. It's one of the reasons that many people love ND. ND has almost always stood as proof that "old fashioned" values (character and education) don't have to be a handicap, in the modern world.

I guess my point is.............it's not stupid of Weis to get some of these guys into games, even in garbage time, because it's not "automatic" that they will be granted a 5th year if they don't play, like at many other schools.
