Richland Northeast DE Chris Bonds (6-4 283), who has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, suffered torn meniscus cartliage in his right knee in the game against Blythewood September 12th. Bonds will have arthroscopic surgery Tuesday and will be out at least three weeks. Bonds tore the ACL in his left knee last season. He missed most of his sophomore season with a severe ankle sprain. As for his recruiting, Bonds has visited Notre Dame officially and is scheduled to visit Tennessee October 25th. With this down time due to the injury, Bonds said he might move up his other visits. He plans to set dates with Southern Cal and Alabama. Michigan has been on list of visits but he said he's not sure he'll schedule that one. Bonds said right now Notre Dame and Southern Cal are tied at the top of his list. USC remains under consideration. He has not visited the Gamecocks since the NC State game and does not have any plans for another visit at this time.

as discussed previously by others, ND will provide him with a nice fallback if injuries continue to plague him.

i simply meant at ND if you get injured you're still going to have your schollie and get a tremendous education. i wasn't referring to ND as a fallback school rather a great fallback situation if football ends.

just adding to SoCal's article...Espn released this today...

Two programs have "slight edge" for Chris Bonds
ESPNU 150 prospect Chris Bonds has given a "slight edge" to USC and Notre Dame, ESPN affiliate CrimsonConfidential.com reports.
He said, "The thing that stands out to me about Notre Dame is the academics, and what stands out to me about Southern Cal is the fact that they're ranked high every year."

Bonds still maintains the same top six, which also includes South Carolina, Alabama, Michigan and Tennessee.

He also commented on how and when he plans to announce, "I don't want to wait until national signing day and do the whole hat thing. I'm not a spotlight dude. I just wake up and play football and go to school. I'm a simple guy."

I'm really hoping he picks us over Southern Cal. He has to see that we're getting better, and it won't be long before we're ranked consistantly in the top 5-7 teams in the country.

Heard he liked it and compared it to ND. I think he will be visiting Tenn. this weekend, and could decide anytime after that. I don't think he will wait until the AA game or anything like that.

He looks like the kind of guy you want playing end in a 3-4 scheme. With only 3 down linemen you need to have each of those guys take up some space. Bonds looks to be that kind of defender. More linemen like this are needed to help the ND run defense. The Irish just doesn't land enough big time linemen on defense....or offense. It would be encouraging to see ND pair this guy with Stockton.

Chris is down to Alabama or Notre Dame; he dropped Southern Cal from his list recently.

Let's hope he looks at the respective depth charts and the current commits for 2009 of each school. At Alabama, they currently have 12 DL players on scholarship that are not seniors; most of those coming in the 2007 and 2008 classes (Jrs and Sophs next year). Bama also has 4-commits for 2009 on the DL.

Notre Dame has 8-DL for next year: I-Williams(JR), H-Williams(So), Newman(So), Nwanko (Sr), Mullen(Jr), EJ(So), KLM(So), Cwynar(So). (classes are as of next year)

At this point, ND has only Stockton commited for 2009 on the d-line. so including Bonds, ND would have 10-defensive linemen, compared to Alabama's 17 (including Bonds).

needless to say the line to get playing time will be much shorter at ND.

Also, it's needless to say that from an academic standpoint ND is MUCH better!!! :)
Come on Chris, be a domer!

Not really. Latest comments from his HS coach (I believe) say that he may decide before the All-star game, or wait till the game. When he's ready, he'll decide.

Bonds To Announce Monday
By Phil Kornblut

Richland Northeast DE Chris Bonds (6-4 283) turned 18 Thursday. He also made a decision about his college football future. But, after originally planning to announce his decision Thursday afternoon, Bonds decided to wait until Monday according to his coach Jay Frye. No one has said which school is the wiinner, but indications earlier Thursday were that Alabama will be the choice. Bonds has been sidelined since mid-September with a knee injury. His team plays a second round playoff game Friday. There is some optimism he might return for that game, but there's been no definite decision.

I'm not buying that absent a quote. He could choose Bama, but I don't put any stock in someone's guesstimate without knowing who is guessing.

Isn't Emeka Nwanko going to be a JR?

Looking more and more like he will choose Alabama.

I have to say, this is one that really perplexes me. I appreciate that right now Alabama is having more success on the d-line (in games) than ND. Therefore he thinks Alabama will better prepare him to play at the next level.

But at ND next year, he'd be 1 of 10. At Alabama, he'll be 1 of 17 (both include other 2009 commits). If his knee injury slows him down at all next year, he could easily get buried on the depth chart; getting buried on the depth chart at a school like Alabama where they regularly receive 30 letters of intent per year is not a good thing.

Don't think that Alabama won't load up on DL recruits next year either; they apparently like the 6-pack approach.

I don't mean to sound like sour grapes, I don't hope the kid is unsuccessful; it just confuses me thats all.

I have no problem with being wrong about him choosing Alabama or him being successful.

can you explain what the six pack approach is? my mind is drawing a blank.

I just meant that they appear to be getting nearly six recruits on the offensive and defensive lines. If Bonds chooses Alabama, they will have 5 commits on the D-line. Now it's possible all of them will not get admitted b/c that's how Alabama recruits (they accept LOIs from 30+ kids knowing there will be "attrition" due grades)
