midwestguy, what is your problem dude? do you like making a joke of yourself? clearly you dont know the rules and you cant recognize talent when you see it. midwestguy, king of making ridiculous threads and getting laughed at by everyone else here.
Probably because they ruled that the "play" (the ND spike) had never happened, because time had run out? I don't know, but that's the only way I can think of that they could justify reviewing it.
I thought that the officials got both calls correct. It's a diservice to both teams, who played a hell of a game, to blame the officials for a win or loss.
But they ruled it a catch. First down. Clock stops. Spike. Clock stops. ND has one more play. Kudos to the ND staff for halting the game.
You know as well as I do, that sometimes the officials have to look to one another, before they render a final decision on the play. That's because all of the officials have specific responsibilities, based on their position relative to the play. That often takes a few seconds. If they did not blow the whistle immediately, and the time ran off, then that is just bad luck for the Irish. It sucks, but the officials are mostly concerned with getting it right, even if it means that things go south, occassionally.
I don't blame them, because it was such a crazy finish, but if they ruled it a catch, and ball down, should not the clock have been stopped after a first down? After the spike, should not have ND been given one more play?
You have stated that you are a ref. I want to hear your opinion.
If they had ruled that Floyd was down than the clock should have been stopped immediately...It was a hell of an effort by the whole team. That play highlighted both Floyd and Clausen's abilities and determination. Clausen threw a dart that very few QBs could have thrown with such accuracy and Floyd made a great catch over the middle in a high pressure situation. Floyd gave it all the effort he could and so did the whole team.
The officiating was good. The play was good. It was a good game.
Thanks. The only thing I disagree with is that the nation saw that the refs ruled it a catch and placed the ball, then Jimmy spiked it.
Obviously they ruled ruled that Floyd was down because ND ran a play afterward (spike). Why did they review after the spike? They messed up dude, but like I have already stated, I can't blame them. It was a great game.
I was at a bar and people were jumping up and down in front of the tv that I was watching but it looked like the offense just ran up, grabbed the ball and ran a play without the official spotting the ball. The other possibility is that the line judge or head linesman was running in and blowing the whistle before the ball was snapped. We have difficulty seeing that on tv as they are usually focusing on the QB/Center exchange at that point.
There was confusion abound at the end but I think the officials got it right. I think the boys are right on the cusp of something incredible. Like I said in another thread, I feel ambivalence towards the results of this game: so many positives with the only negative (relatively speaking) being that we lost.
P.S. I was sober throughout the entire game. (I drank water because the waitress had such large, tanned and beautifully contained boobies, and i wanted to coyly garner points with her. It failed quickly when the next better looking stud drew her attention)
The official spotted the ball.
I think they blew it.
I will check this site tomorrow to see if anyone has studied it with a clear mind.
Freegin ND.
I had a bar maid w/ big juggs as well. Unfortunately I only know that from seeing her outside the bar....they make the waitresses wear referee shirts. I tried to tell the owner that they should get the waitresses those slutty halloween referee costumes but he vetoed me....what a fuck head.
I know the rules. I like all the referees on the field, saw a catch.
And whose talent don't I see? Clausen is talented, but he is careless with the ball and chucks it up a lot. To be fair, he is a sophomore and may improve.
After watching the ND/NC game and also highlights of other games I realized that the rule on a reception/interception is the ground "CAN" cause an incompletion? That is according to ESPN regarding another game. (cant recall which one). Let me get this straight. You are down when you touch the ground in college football but the ground can cause you to lose the ball and its an incomplete pass. Did anyone else see this in the Ok. State game I think. Guy catches the ball in the end zone, falls, ground causes him to lose the ball and its incomplete. I do think it was a possible interception though. Did I dream this up?
That's why they say "ground can't cause a FUMBLE". When a guy is running with the ball, gets tackled and goes down than hitting the ground and losing the ball is not a fumble. However, when a receiver goes in the air to make a catch and the ball pops out when he hits the ground than it's a fumble. To demonstrate possession a receiver either needs to catch the ball, secure it and begin to run/make a move. When a receiver makes a diving catch or sideline grab they need to have possession and hold on to the ball otherwise it's incomplete. That NC play was an incomplete pass. Floyd was losing the ball before he touched the ground and that was a fumble.

I agree on the Floyd play with you. I also understand that, by the rule, the NC pass play was incomplete. The other example I was referring to was a game and I cant recall the teams. I think Ok. State was playing. Guy intercepts the ball in the end zone, takes a step, rolls on the ground, loses the ball, play called incomplete. He had the ball tucked on the roll but still lost it. He was not on his way down from a catch in the air either. He was on his feet when the ball was caught. Anyway, that has nothing to do with Irish football. I just did not realize that was the rule. I do now.
Great explanation. Thanks. I completley trust your experience and expertise, but I have a lingering question. (Can't remember if I asked you this last night) Of course the point is moot by now, but maybe a learning experience:
On the field, the play was ruled a catch. No fumble. ND then ran another play. (Spike) Why was the play in question even reviewed? ND got screwed. At least thats what I viewed.

Overall the officiating was ok, but I still don't understand when Blanton recovered what appeared to be a Hicks fumble, that was not challenged/reviewed? That clearly kept NC's scoring drive alive. ABC's coverage was awful.
