I thought that the officials got both calls correct. It's a diservice to both teams, who played a hell of a game, to blame the officials for a win or loss.

midwestguy, what is your problem dude? do you like making a joke of yourself? clearly you dont know the rules and you cant recognize talent when you see it. midwestguy, king of making ridiculous threads and getting laughed at by everyone else here.

I know the rules. I like all the referees on the field, saw a catch.

And whose talent don't I see? Clausen is talented, but he is careless with the ball and chucks it up a lot. To be fair, he is a sophomore and may improve.

Probably because they ruled that the "play" (the ND spike) had never happened, because time had run out? I don't know, but that's the only way I can think of that they could justify reviewing it.

But they ruled it a catch. First down. Clock stops. Spike. Clock stops. ND has one more play. Kudos to the ND staff for halting the game.

I don't blame them, because it was such a crazy finish, but if they ruled it a catch, and ball down, should not the clock have been stopped after a first down? After the spike, should not have ND been given one more play?

You have stated that you are a ref. I want to hear your opinion.

You know as well as I do, that sometimes the officials have to look to one another, before they render a final decision on the play. That's because all of the officials have specific responsibilities, based on their position relative to the play. That often takes a few seconds. If they did not blow the whistle immediately, and the time ran off, then that is just bad luck for the Irish. It sucks, but the officials are mostly concerned with getting it right, even if it means that things go south, occassionally.

But they looked to one another and decided it was a catch and he was down. Then they set the ball. They failed to throw a flag for NC offsides.

Crazy finish. I don't blame them.

This is the first time in years that I think ND is getting fair officiating.

And now for the first time in megayears, I am hearing and reading that ND is getting the benefit of officiating. I guess that is what happens when you are THE MAN. Everyone wants to beat you. Everyone.

If they had ruled that Floyd was down than the clock should have been stopped immediately. I believe that they ruled it a fumble which was, from what I saw, correct and in that instance the clock does not stop until someone recovers the ball. It may than be debateable as to whether NC even needed to run the last play. I know that Floyd tried to push the ball out, as if it were a pitch, as he went down but the replays showed him losing control of the ball before his shoulder hit. That play was a catch & fumble and nothing more elegant than that.

It was a hell of an effort by the whole team. That play highlighted both Floyd and Clausen's abilities and determination. Clausen threw a dart that very few QBs could have thrown with such accuracy and Floyd made a great catch over the middle in a high pressure situation. Floyd gave it all the effort he could and so did the whole team.

The officiating was good. The play was good. It was a good game.

Thanks. The only thing I disagree with is that the nation saw that the refs ruled it a catch and placed the ball, then Jimmy spiked it.

Obviously they ruled ruled that Floyd was down because ND ran a play afterward (spike). Why did they review after the spike? They messed up dude, but like I have already stated, I can't blame them. It was a great game.

I was at a bar and people were jumping up and down in front of the tv that I was watching but it looked like the offense just ran up, grabbed the ball and ran a play without the official spotting the ball. The other possibility is that the line judge or head linesman was running in and blowing the whistle before the ball was snapped. We have difficulty seeing that on tv as they are usually focusing on the QB/Center exchange at that point.

There was confusion abound at the end but I think the officials got it right. I think the boys are right on the cusp of something incredible. Like I said in another thread, I feel ambivalence towards the results of this game: so many positives with the only negative (relatively speaking) being that we lost.

P.S. I was sober throughout the entire game. (I drank water because the waitress had such large, tanned and beautifully contained boobies, and i wanted to coyly garner points with her. It failed quickly when the next better looking stud drew her attention)

The official spotted the ball.

I think they blew it.

I will check this site tomorrow to see if anyone has studied it with a clear mind.

Freegin ND.

I had a bar maid w/ big juggs as well. Unfortunately I only know that from seeing her outside the bar....they make the waitresses wear referee shirts. I tried to tell the owner that they should get the waitresses those slutty halloween referee costumes but he vetoed me....what a fuck head.

What a dick. Manager should demand that waitress with beautiful boobies and hard waist cater to any ND male fan prepared to spend a dime.

Some people just don't get it.

And whose talent don't I see? Clausen is talented, but he is careless with the ball and chucks it up a lot. To be fair, he is a sophomore and may improve.

Dude, are you serious? Are you related to Sharpley? Yeah, he is a sophmore, and many of his picks have not been his fault, and many have (the 1st pick was very bad today). But when you have ZERO running game, and you have to throw the ball 48 friggin' times, yeah, you're gonna have some picks and some near picks. But not every QB is going to throw for 378 yards with a 65% completion percentage. And he's not running the spread offense, where he can just run screens and bubble screens and hitches all day. This is a pro-style offense where he needs to make all the throws. He also went 10 quarters w/out a pick, even though drops back 3 out of 4 plays.

Seriously, what do you want from your QB? Would you be satisfied if he went 34-35 for 412 yards? I doubt it. You'd be bitching about the one incompletion.

Your last statement sums up how well you see the game of football: he is a sophomore and may improve. May improve? Do you see the ridiculous improvement in his game from just 10 months ago? You don't think it's going to continue? Are you for real? Do you even realize the goldmine we have in this kid?

Finally, you got burned on the catch by the poster who posted the rule. I'll give you my rule that I've been taught by all my coaches: Catch the damn ball, and give it to the refs. No confusion necessary. The dude didn't maintain possesion. You lose, "ND fan".

After watching the ND/NC game and also highlights of other games I realized that the rule on a reception/interception is the ground "CAN" cause an incompletion? That is according to ESPN regarding another game. (cant recall which one). Let me get this straight. You are down when you touch the ground in college football but the ground can cause you to lose the ball and its an incomplete pass. Did anyone else see this in the Ok. State game I think. Guy catches the ball in the end zone, falls, ground causes him to lose the ball and its incomplete. I do think it was a possible interception though. Did I dream this up?

That's why they say "ground can't cause a FUMBLE". When a guy is running with the ball, gets tackled and goes down than hitting the ground and losing the ball is not a fumble. However, when a receiver goes in the air to make a catch and the ball pops out when he hits the ground than it's incomplete ( Edit: I had fumble here and I meant incomplete). To demonstrate possession a receiver either needs to catch the ball, secure it and begin to run/make a move. When a receiver makes a diving catch or sideline grab they need to have possession and hold on to the ball otherwise it's incomplete. That NC play was an incomplete pass. Floyd was losing the ball before he touched the ground and that was a fumble.

I agree on the Floyd play with you. I also understand that, by the rule, the NC pass play was incomplete. The other example I was referring to was a game and I cant recall the teams. I think Ok. State was playing. Guy intercepts the ball in the end zone, takes a step, rolls on the ground, loses the ball, play called incomplete. He had the ball tucked on the roll but still lost it. He was not on his way down from a catch in the air either. He was on his feet when the ball was caught. Anyway, that has nothing to do with Irish football. I just did not realize that was the rule. I do now.

Great explanation. Thanks. I completley trust your experience and expertise, but I have a lingering question. (Can't remember if I asked you this last night) Of course the point is moot by now, but maybe a learning experience:

On the field, the play was ruled a catch. No fumble. ND then ran another play. (Spike) Why was the play in question even reviewed? ND got screwed. At least thats what I viewed.

It's confusing because some rules are emphatic and clear while others are left open to interpretation. I wonder what yesterday's officials would have called that catch Floyd made against Purdue when he had the ball over his head, hit the ground and lost it....that game's crew called it a catch and fumble. I don't know how many other people here have ever officiated but it's very difficult to make those kind of calls because you always want to make sure that it's 100% correct. You never want to influence the outcome of a game....only interpret the rules correctly.

That goes back to what we may not have seen. The line judge or head linesman may have been blowing the play dead and running in from the sidelines. Also, as happens a lot, the whistle may have been blown but the play was already started. We've all seen a false start play when the quarterback is already four steps back and the play is progressing before the officials get in there to stop the play for a dead ball foul. Given the speed with which a spike play occurs I wouldn't be surprised if the officials just didn't have the time to stop that play before it was ran.

But what I saw was the refs calling it a completion, and setting the ball. 5 seconds left. Clock stops on a first down. Spike. 2nd and goal ND. Oh well. I am just sitting here getting ready to go to church and confess my lust for yesterday's waitress.

I saw the same thing but I also saw chaos. The clock stoppage thing that is new this year (first downs) has thrown a wrench in the review process. Plus it hinders comebacks like yesterday. But I am all for getting the call right. I do think that happened. Do you actually have to run a play or just snap the ball? I think you have to actually run a play. I agree with the earlier comment, its moot now.

You can snap the ball and run a play but if the officials were trying to stop the play before it was ran then it doesn't matter, I would guess that's what happened. If they made one mistake it was that they should have stopped the clock immediately, went to the booth and kept the people off the field. The officials allowed confusion to reign at the end of the game....that should never happen.

Overall the officiating was ok, but I still don't understand when Blanton recovered what appeared to be a Hicks fumble, that was not challenged/reviewed? That clearly kept NC's scoring drive alive. ABC's coverage was awful.

i don't like that crew that was covering the game. they seemed more interested in cracking jokes and not paying attention to the game.
