ESPN had this poll question on their college football homepage. "With a record of 4-1, is Notre Dame back?" 78% of the l100,227 voters said No. I dont think the poll was fair though. The only options were yes and no. The options should have been "Yes", "No", and "Its too soon to tell." I voted no because it is too soon to tell. But by voting ''no'' it gives them no credit towards the progress they have made since last year. But I think they are pretty close to being back, just not yet. Therefore I couldnt vote yes.

IF they beat NC, Wash. and Pitt (2 in the top 25 AP poll) over the next month it may be a more legit time to ask this question. MSU is by far the best team they have played yet this year and we all know how that ended. 4-1 or not, beating Stanford AT HOME by 7 points is not a reason to be considered being 'back'!

I voted no as much as I would like to think that we are "back" we still need to win some games on the road.

we aren't totally matured yet but this is basically the team that will turn us around, just need some experience and they're gaining that with every game. This week will be a deciding factor in just how far we've come, if we can go on the road and beat a ranked opponent in a sure to be hostile environment then i would say we are back.

Its not like we got destroyed by MSU, the game was a lot closer than the score indicated.

I really hate the whole "are we back" thing. Who cares? We'll either wins games or lose them, win bowls or lose them, and recruit or not. But all programs go through downturns, some just last longer than others. The whole "is Notre Dame back" thing is just applying a time table and unnecessary pressure on a team that doesn't need either. Enjoy it for what it is...a 4-1 start to what looks like a promising season...instead of looking for what it means.

If Notre Dame can get back to a level of sustained excellence for four to five YEARS than I will say that Notre Dame is "back". Back can mean different things to different programs; when you talk about Notre Dame it's competing for NC's year in and out or getting to a BCS game.

Come back and ask this question again in 2012.

were winning at home, so we need to prove we can win on the road, i dont care about stats or anything else, if you know how to protect your house and then you can go on the road and take games than you are a formidable team.

Well, they are almost "back" in the top 25. They received votes from both polls for the first time this year and a win over ranked UNC would assure a 25 ranking. But UNC looks tough and this game will be hard to win away from home.

Front seven on defense is still the problem . . .

But Tenuta (sp?) is helping here.

Back? Did we go somewhere? Lol!

Just glad to see progress and am really looking forward to the rest of the year and next season and so on.

The potential is there for great things to come.

A couple of reasons why ND isn't back (top 10 consideration) is the D-line doesn't belong in the top 40 this year. The Offense cannot sutain a running game against a real defense. The defense cannot stop the run agianst an average offense. Kicking game (field Goals and kickoffs) no need to go further on that. I think the secondary and LB's will be huge next year but still need some real studs up front. Offensively JC, GT, MF & KR are looking like the best group of guys at those positions cumulatively in the country for a frosh/soph mix. We are top 25 potential right now and very possibly top 10 next year and the year after that and so on.

It is way too early to say we're back. I would have voted no also. I really think for us to be considered back, it has to be a shocker when we lose. When I consider us back is when we beat a top ranked opponent and it doesn't shock the college football world.

We are definitely not back yet. We are making progress (slower in some areas than others) and things are looking brighter. But really, I couldn't care less about polls or voters or anything else. Just keep winning and playing your guts out and I will be happy.
