I like to study offense a lot and I really like the Pistol formations some schools like BYU and Missouri utilize, as well as the Spread Option that Oregon uses with a mobile QB. I have always been a fan of the mobile QB who can add another dimension to the attack. What type of offenses do you guys like, and what would you like to see the Irish run (assuming you would change from the current pro-style attack)?

Naw i like the pro style attack. sc uses it and it works the best when you have the talent. for example brady quinn, shark, stovall, mcknight, dwalk.

when you have the right players the pro style offense is the best offense in my opinion. lou's option attack worked well, and the spread seems to be what everyone is running now but, nothing beats a pro style offense thats why the pros use it.

I agree. There is a reason the NFL uses "pro sets." However, I think you have to dictate your style to your personal. GENERALLY SPEAKING, If you have big bruising backs, you can run the triple option. If you have faster more agile backs, any form of a spread would be successful. Defenses will eventually adjust to the new wave of spread offenses, then there will be another " set" that develops.

I agree the pro style attack is well balanced and a very good choice overall, which is why the pros use it. However, with some of the interesting and unique things one can do in college, it seems a shame to not take advantage of them. I like the Spread simply because of the philosophy behind it, not because it's the new hotness. I like unusual offensive sets because they cause mismatches for standard thinking defenses regardless of personnel.

although i agree with adapting to your personnel and all that this team is built for a prostyle offense and that is what charlie knows how to run. we tried t a different approach last year with d. jones at qb but it didnt work out. much like richrod is struggling because his players are more suited for a prostyle offense as well.

it all starts with a smart qb who knows the offense, charlie had that at NE with tom brady and his first two years at ND with Brady Quinn, and it looks as if jimmy clausen is starting to blossom into that smart leader that this offense needs.

once that happens watch out!

Best offenseive playbook and style is USC's. They can spread it out all over the place and they never use a shotgun. I hate the spread option, but in about 2years every defense coordinato will have figured it out.

Wishbone option. Very hard to defend, opens passing lanes, fullback gets to hurt safety's pride and shoulders every once in a while and 3 times out of 4, gets 4 yards average per play. One kicker, got to have a very smart and tough quarterback, which I think we have. Or just put 5 wide receivers out there out of the shotgun!!!! (thats for you Irishfan! LOL)

I Like the style when you hit your opponent in the mouth... whatever that classifies as.

Smashmouth Football. :)

I think the Spread is a fad for now as well, although some schools have been running it before it really hit "fad" status. I think BYU has always done some interesting things offensively and defensively. I was never a big fan of the Option based attack, but I do agree it is a pain to defend against if the team running it has fast and powerful athletes. Nebraska built a dynasty on it.

The problem with the Pro Style offense to me is that too often Offensive Coordinators tend to get too vanilla with it. They always want to do screens and draws, mixing in some tight end seem patterns. OK, but there are more choices than that...especially in the college game. It used to annoy the hell out of me the first year Charlie was here and we never seemed to run many slant routes. It's one of the most basic, and hardest to defend patterns in football and when we seemed to NEED a few yards, out we'd trot with a screen pass.

I don't really like the Spread's heavy reliance on the shotgun formation...that I could do without. But, the routes as well as the ability for a mobile quarterback to freelance is really nice. Especially on the college level because not every team has the elite level players like every NFL club has.

You go with what your personnel allows. But I like the spread attack, if you have the athletes to run it. These D coordinators have a hard time stopping it unless they have superior talent to stop it. (APP v. LSU)You can run the spread with lineman that aren't as strong as some of your opponents and still move the ball. (App. St. vs Michigan) Get run over slowly and the chains still move. You have so many options every play you run out of it, I'm a big fan of the spread. I really like the different paces you can run out of the spread that throw your defenses off, the defense really has to be ready and the opposing offense will have to score a fair amount of points to beat you. Superior talent will ultimately win out but the spread gives you a chance. Coach Johnson runs his offense well and its been around for awhile yet no one can shut it down consistently, players have to play these type of offenses very disciplined and thats hard to do for a whole game.

That's true in most cases, unless the coaches and assistants in charge really cannot do much with the people they have. Take for example Willingham. When he got there, he had Carlyle Holiday to work with who was not a passing QB. He had to force him to play a specific way and that wasn't really his game. It showed. He would have been better off leaving the Option attack in place, or creating something spread oriented (which Holiday would have been perfect for), but Ty didn't know how to run offenses like that. Neither does Charlie when he tried the spread last year with Jones. So, I think in most cases you run something you have personnel for, but I really think it comes down to the coach having a system he knows and putting it in place personnel be damned. But anyway, the point of this thread really was more along the lines of "if you had the personnel for any kind of offense, what would you run".

It doesn't matter if it's college pro or the high school I help out with... if I see the Power I, I get a warm feeling inside

At the high school level I like the Wing T but you have to have fast backs and fast guards. It's usually difficult to defend becuase there is alot of movement in the back field. If you can get your Line Backers to read the guards instead of looking for the ball all the time you can shut it down. Unfortunately most lb's in high school always try and read the ball so with all the movement in the backfield the wing T can be a very successful offense at the high school level. Anything above the high school level I have to go with the pro style offense.

I used to think the Option was an arcane and outdated offense but I don't anymore. There are a lot of things that can be done with it when it's in the right hands, and with the rules in college football you can get really creative.
