Who will bring swagger to NDs' defense this year?

Who on this years' defense has the potential to be the leader and have a swagger (cocky) mentality? There used to be an everready battery commercial with Robert Conrad placing a battery on his shoulder daring anyone to knock it off. Conrad had an ATTITUDE that nobody messes with him. Sometimes it comes through as a quiet confidence like Clint Eastwood exuded in his movies of the past. Players from the past that come to mind with this personality are Bob Golic, Ross Browner, Bob Crable, and Chris Zorich. I remember Zorich in the 1988 USC game in the colliseum (#1 vs. #2) showing who was boss in pulling trojan players off of our ball carriers after plays. This attitude brings success in the field. Who now will rise to the occasion?

I think Bruton is a likely candidate. He is not only an outspoken captain, he should increase his physical play as well. I will be interested to see Brian Smith's move to the middle. While he was uncomfortable at first, his recent comments saying "it's going to be violent" is a sign of his attitude.

Maurice Crum and Bruton for sure but maybe someone like Brian Smith or a young kid like Robert Blanton.

I think that Harrison Smith has a chance to be the man who lays some big hits and gets the team pumped up. Kind of like Zibby was during his soph and junior years. He had a tendency to hit an opponent hard and knock him backwards, which would change the energy of the entire team. I'm so excited to see him running all over the field looking for "victims."

I think there is gonna be a lot of swagger all over the place on defense this year. The defense looked great at times last year and if they didn't spend so much time on the field and had to deal with horrible field position they would have put up a lot better numbers than they actually did. Charlie looks as though he's really instilled this idea of "swagger" in the players and there really isn't anyone on defense that I think won't have it. You have guys like Bruton, Crum, Kuntz and Harrison Smith that are the more in your face swagger guys. But at the same token you've got Lambert, Williams, Brian Smith and Kyle McCarthy who are much more of the quietly confindent guys. If we can control the ball on offense and keep the time of possession in our favor this year, I believe we'll be talking about our defense like the way we were talking about the offense a few years ago.

"can't stop what you don't see"... feel the 15 seconds of uncomfortable silence by jon tenuta. i think he will be a son of a bitch and this whole defense will step up big time b/c they won't want to have to deal with his wrath or charlie's or corwin's.

I like the energy of Kuntz, but I also like to hear that someone like Blanton is "chirpy" meaning he talks a lot of smack. We need that. I wanna see a little bit of guys getting in the opponents faces and jawing with them. Keep the sportsmanship, but some bravado and smack talk never hurt anyone. I remember the days when we weren't afraid to get in anyone's face. Like when SC was in our tunnel in (I believe) '90 or '91 (correct me if I am wrong) and they started singing the ND fight song. I heard a story that Stonebreaker ripped a Trojan's helmet off and started hitting him with it. Awesome.

Ticket to South Bend: $300
Putting on your new Trojan uni: $250
Getting your butt whupped with your own helmet: PRICELESS!!

the whole D!!!!!! seriously, Crum and Bruton are gonna bring a ton of emotion, RJ Blanton's got the trash talk down, Brian Smith and Kuntz are gonna put on a show... every guy out there, including plenty of the situational guys (like Sergio Brown) and the back ups are gonna bring it. CRANK ME UP!

I like B. Smith to bring it this year-Also, as a sneak up and bite you player-I'm looking for Paddy Mullen (How can you not like this name-it's a given he's a Golden Domer) to step up and prove he should be out there.

Bring it Irish!

Sergio was an animal on the field. He got an A+ in my book today.

I gotta agree with u on that one LMI. That was a break-out performance if I ever saw one! If Brown keeps making plays like he did today, he could become the spark plug of this D. He's definately got the swagger! Can't wait to see his athleticism at work against scUM's "spread"!!
